How to Hand Enhance a Canvas Giclee with Paint-Acrylic or Oil Paint

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I demonstrate my technique for hand enhancing a canvas giclee art print. I show you how to first seal the surface and then apply either acrylic or oil paint to enhance the canvas with texture and brush marks. This is a beautiful alternative that is enhanced by the artist to make a giclee print look more like the original painting. Thank you so much for watching! If you have any questions, please leave a comment, share with your friends and if you can, please subscribe to my channel! I post new videos every week.
What is a giclee print? Giclee is a french word that means 'fine spray'. Unlike a common print, a giclee print is achieved using high quality professional printers that have 12 colors of archival ink. Once a high quality image is taken of the original painting, it is loaded into a computer which is connected to the high quality professional 12 color printer. These colors which are archival inks, are then applied to the canvas or paper in a fine spray onto the canvas. This fine spray can be thinner than a human hair. The depth of color range is far greater than a 4 or 5 color printer most commonly used. This depth of color range can achieve the identical look of the original painting.

    Hi. This was great. Appreciate you sharing. Do you varnish or add anything at the end on top of the oil paint layer to protect it?

  • @janetferraroartstudio4234

    @janetferraroartstudio4234

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s a great question. I personally have not applied a protective coating after applying oil paint. Although if you have a varnish that works with either acrylic or oil paint, I would imagine that would work since the giclee print has a layer or two of acrylic gel medium. If you follow the demonstration in this video, this protective medium does provide a barrier from the giclee canvas. I hope that helps! 🙂

    Outstanding Janet !! I'm new to Giclee. Question: Whats the primary reason to paint over your print if you're the artist who created the painting? Is this a more speedy way of producing original art?

  • @janetferraroartstudio4234

    @janetferraroartstudio4234

    Great question. To add paint to a giclee is a way of adding the artists touch giving the print extra texture, paint marks and value . I have found that some clients really like this. It’s then called a hand enhanced or embellished giclee. It’s not presented as an original painting but rather as a hand enhanced giclee.

    Great clear description thanks Janet! I've been asked to paint in oil over an entire (50 yr old) giclee which is covered in small cracks all over. Can this be done? Or would it be easier to repaint on fresh canvas?

    Thank you for your question! I don’t think I would paint over a 50 year old giclee with cracks on the surface. It’s hard to know without seeing it. Is the canvas itself in good shape?

    Giclee cannot be 50 years old, because it is a relatively new printing process. Giclée, coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne for fine art digital prints made using inkjet printers.

    Yes I did seal it with the same mixture of Gel Gloss Acrylic medium as I used as an isolation coat before enhancing the giclee. This evens out and unifies the sheen. I have not tried using a varnish. The giclee has a UV protection and archival inks. I hope that helps! Thank you for watching!

    Hi Janet, Firstly Amazing painting, loved ur work. Thanks so much for the demonstration, I am planning to take a print of my work and paint over it with oil paints. I have a question, after applying the gel medium and oil painting over it, the oil paint would dry properly right? The gel medium seal, will it effect the drying process?

  • @janetferraroartstudio4234

    @janetferraroartstudio4234

    Hi, thank you so much ! 💕 the gel medium is an acrylic medium and once it is dry you can paint over it with with oil paint. When I hand enhance using oil paint, I apply two watered down coats , as I demonstrate in this video, of the gel medium first and allow it to dry thoroughly before painting with oil. I hope this process helps you too ! I have been using this technique for over 5 years now with fabulous results.

    Why do you need to seal it first? Is adhesion or bleeding a concern?

  • @janetferraroartstudio4234

    @janetferraroartstudio4234

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your question. Sealing the canvas is the best way to ensure that the paint you apply does not interfere with the giclee inks. If a water medium, such as acrylic is applied without sealing the canvas first, it could lift the inks off the canvas. If oil is applied without sealing the canvas first, the oil could or would migrate into the inks of the giclee. Essentially a canvas giclee is not a gessoed surface and sealing is always a good idea. I hope this helps! Happy painting!

    Thank you for your question. I have applies oil paint using a small palette knife. It wasn’t too thick though , just slightly raised above the surface. If you use professional or good quality oil paint, you should not have cracking issues.

    I think that is possible. Often times a person will say, it looks just like an original. But I have received that same comment many times from a giclee print that has no enhancement.

    Hi Joey, Thank you for your question. My recommendation for finding a good quality giclee printing company locally where you live is to check with your local art league organization , frame shops and or galleries. If you are in the U.S., you can search online. Giclee Today has nice options and is online. Quality is so important. Make sure that the stretcher bars are wood, not plastic, the inks used are archival and a UV coating is on the surface to protect the giclee print from sun light UV damage. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you and happy painting!

    When I hand enhance a canvas giclee I usually charge 25 % more than for a canvas give print with no enhancement. I have been doing art shows and showing in galleries since 2008. Most of my clients have come to know me that way. I also have an Etsy Shop. Thankfully I do sell quite a bit of work and specialize in custom commissions. Thank you for asking and best to you in your painting journey!

    Canvas giclee is a print on canvas. Giclee is a French word meaning ‘fine spray’. This indicates a high quality print. The machine, printer, that prints onto the canvas uses a fine spray of up to 12 colors that can be sprayed finer than the width of a human hair.
