How To Hack Networking | David Burkus | TEDxUniversityofNevada
What if all the advice we've heard about networking is wrong? What if it's not about meeting strangers but about getting a better understanding of the existing network that’s already around you? In this talk David Burkus, author of the book "Friend of a Friend", examines the science of how networks work and reveals what the best networkers really do.
David Burkus is a best-selling author, a sought after speaker, and business school professor. In 2015, he was named one of the emerging thought leaders most likely to shape the future of business by Thinkers50, the world’s premier ranking of management thinkers.
His forcoming book, Friend of a Friend, offers readers a new perspective on how to grow their networks and build key connections-one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice. He is also the author of Under New Management and The Myths of Creativity. David is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review and his work has been featured in Fast Company, the Financial Times, Inc magazine, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and CBS This Morning.
David’s innovative views on leadership have earned him invitations to speak to leaders from a variety of organizations. His TED talk has been viewed over 1.8 million times. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Here are my main takeaways! Redefine Networking 1. Reconnect with old friends a. Reach out to old friends and renew dormant ties. Reach out with genuine interest to connect, not with an agenda. 2. Turn work friends into real friends. a. When networking, ask about hobbies and non-work interests. Research suggests the more diverse ways we connect with a person, the deeper connection we create faster. b. Find a non-work reason to connect. 3. Connect through friends of friends. a. Ask current friends, “who do you know in ____?”. b. Ask for introductions.

Thank you for this interesting & inspiring talk, I can't help but share those points: 1. Reconnect with old friends - renew dormant ties: new old connections. 2. Turn work friends into real friends 3. Connect through friends of friends. The Catchphrase : Show me your friend of a friend, & I'll show you your future.

Couldn't agree more! I've found that networking online can be helpful for introverts/shy people. I've recently made a video for networking on LinkedIn if it's helpful for people. :)
What an amazing speech! Keep up the good work David!
Awesome David, that's why I treasure and nurture friendships.
Just found this video - amazing perspective in networking. Looking forward to reading the book.
What a speaker! Well done.
You killed it. Such an original video, I appreciate this so much. Thanks for teaching from an original perspective the value of networking.
Wow, amazing... I especially like how a friend of a friend has more influence on my happiness that money. I got happy friends, but I will be on the lookout for more happy friends.
Am curious to hear people's thoughts for networking online. In our socially distant world, this seems to be an increasingly important skill as we move online.

golfing is a great way to network I've been playing for 4 years and I'm gonna go to Vegas when there will be a real estate convention. I'm not paying for the convention. Instead, I while flag people down outside and ask if they are interested in golfing with me. What is the worst that could happen? Maybe they say no, but I know someone who would, also they have a great career and could help you etc
Excellent

So, the moral of this talk is: don’t befriend “obese” folks, smokers, or unhappy folks or even folks who might have friends or friends of friends who fall into any of the aforementioned categories. Personally, I’m not a fan of perpetuating stigmas of obesity, smoking, and mental illness.
Awesome
I just step foot in the real estate business, being a little motivated but im left to find connections on my on and sometimes it just seems impossible.

Your true friends will help you lose weight and eat healthier.and try not to hurt your feelings as impossible as it seems.
@Ritermann
4 жыл бұрын
It is impossible to help people out of there comfort zone without getting feelings getting hurt in the process. The Problem is not them, the problem is you, not getting over our feelings.
Cool talk, it seems like he's are misinterpreting or misrepresenting the study regarding weight of friends-of-friends (etc.). Correlation is different than influence. Two overweight people becoming friends is a different narrative than a skinny person becoming overweight because they have an overweight friend.

Reaching out to old friends and family isn't useful when you've moved to another country. Even moving to a new city or state severely limits what your "connections" can do.

My best friends are my computers. They are not fatty. Their friends are not fatty either. Then why am I fatty? Yeah, my computers make me happy. I'll like to gain computers and of course some online courses and documentation rather than gaining money.

It's kind of hard to support yourself, buy computers, and take online courses if you're not earning anything. Money isn't everything, but it's still a good idea to have enough to live comfortably or support your goals.
