July 7, 2014 This is the updated video of how my watermelons are growing and the value in a container garden. Get creative when you plan ahead for the gardening season. Use any container that did not have powered or liquid chemicals stored in it to grow your fruits or vegetables. Remember what I always say, "If you can put holes in it you can grow in it!"
Watermelons grow wild vines so even though you have the plant in a container you must make sure you create enough space for the vines to grow freely. The physical watermelons will grow throughout each vine so ground space for the vines is important.
WATERMELONS NEED FIVE THINGS TO GROW:
(1). Space (2). Proper Drainage (3). Balanced Watering (4). 6-8 hours of direct sunlight/high temps & (5). Bees for pollination of the flowers on each vine
HAPPY GARDENING!!!!

Two Turtle Gardens Thank you..... Yes they should no problem.... Cantaloupe and Honeydew melons also do very well as a vertical garden you can control the pest getting on your melons better if you have a vertical garden... BENEFITS OF A VERTICAL GARDEN: Anytime you can keep your fruits and veggies off the ground the less issues you will have with bugs and invaders in your garden.. Construct or buy a very stable stand or vertical garden wall... I use thick layers of newspaper as a weed blocker just as easily if you used black tarps or black weed covers that you can also.buy.. Hope this bit of extra info helps and HAPPY GARDENING🍉🍉🍉🍊🍉🥝🥕🥑🍆🍇🍊🍈🍓

Hi.Aziz, Sorry for the extremely late response. You are very welcome. HOW MANY CAN YOU GROW IN A CONTAINER: I think you are asking how many plants can you grow? If you decide to grow your watermelons in a large or medium size container I would suggest only putting 2 plants or 3 seeds in that container. Of course, since watermelons grow as a vine you can plant one plant on each end of the container and train them to grow in the opposite direction of the other plant. ( plant one plant on one end and the other plant on the other end of your container ) WATERMELON SOIL QUALITY: Yes you can add manure to your soil before planting your watermelon plants or seeds. What you personally decide to put in your soil of course is up to you. WATERING YOUR PLANTS: Watermelons just like all other plants you decide to have in your garden require balanced watering and good drainage. Melons need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight, and it is best to water them in the morning so that they have the rest of the day to soak up the water and also dry a bit if you have maybe overwatered them. It is best if you use a water hose to water directly at the root of each plant and allow the water to soak in the soil that would be enough for each plant. If the water builds up on top of the soil and moments later is still on top of the soil you have watered it too much. HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOU HAVE WATERED YOUR MELONS TOO MUCH OR NOT ENOUGH: Overwatering and no drainage for your watermelon plants will make them turn yellow to light green and they will slow production or not flower at all. NOT ENOUGH WATER: The plant will turn yellow then brown and die Thanks for watching my videos and now enjoy shopping for homemade personal products and choosing the best virtual sessions including gardening classes at: KimberlyCaresForU.com HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!

abdullah osman Oh ok... Beautiful culture of people in both locations... 🖤... YES .. That would be my suggestion as you have seen in my videos you can also grown them.in containers... IMPORTANT CONTAINER GROWTH: a deep enough container to have soil coverage for the plant or plants you place in it and holes in the bottom or side for proper drainage. (Watermelon plants will not survive in excess amounts of water or without proper drainage) GROUND COVER: depending on you container placement in your yard or on your land. I would suggest placing black tarps, or black weed covers over am larger area so that when the vines start to get longer you do not have to worry about weeds overtaking the vines..... I look forward to hearing how your garden grows. and I hope that this information is also helpful to your garden growth. THANK YOU AND HAPPY GARDENING!!!! 🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🥕🍊🍅❤🍇🍈🥝🍆

There are alot of things that factor into your growth time... SEEDS: of course take.much longer when planted into the soil as seeds.. PLANTS: develop within 90 days with the necessary continual temps, watering/drainage and soil structure.... With anything that you plant 🍉🍉🍉without chemicals your growth time is different which means the plants lives, grows and survives from nature and you.... I hope this helps and HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!! 🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🥕🥑🥝🥕🍅🍈🍇🍊🍓🍅

Hi Kiruba, Welcome Melbourne, Sorry for the extremely late response. HOW LONG BEFORE THEY GROW: It takes 80-90 days from seed to harvest size on most melons.. The smaller melons which I also have grown called Sugar Baby grows in about 70 or so days. HOW MANY MELONS PER PLANT: most plants on a minuman will produce 2 or 4 melons. There of course may be exceptions soil quality, garden zone and if direct chemicals are used to increase growth! HOW MANY PLANTS SHOULD YOU PLANT: I thought I would add this extra information in the comment for you and others. If you have the space in your garden and you enjoy melons I would suggest planting a variety or a minimum of 3 plants .( again only if you have the space for the vines to grow. Thanks so much for the video. This is what I have been waiting for and I subscribed immediately. Quick question please...how many female flowers do I need to pollinate at a time? Does it take to pollinate female flowers once or constantly? How many fruit can watermelon plantation produce and why are some fruits being removed from the veins or stems? Is it really necessary to prune the leaves/stems? I think I didn't know the rule of pollination of watermelon hence the reason I didn't have successful harvest. Your response and more enlightenment on this my most favourable fruits will be highly appreciated! Thank you.

Hi David. You are very welcome. I am happy that you enjoyed my video, learned something about growing watermelons and subscribed. Excuse my delayed response it been a very busy few weeks for me. To answer your questions. (1). POLLINATING WATERMELONS: NO! This not a required process to do by hand it is optional. By planting flowers within your garden this encourages bees to come to do all the pollinating for you. Those are your workers from nature. I personally do not self pollinate my watermelons no matter how many seasons I plant them. There is no exact number of flowers to self pollinate to guarantee growth since there are many controlled and natural factors that go into growth and development of your garden. If you choose to self pollinate then pollinate all the flowers per plant. Watermelons grow both male and female flowers so again all bees and high temps to naturally do their part and your job is to plant your melons in areas that get 6- 8 hours of direct sunlight and good drainage. (2). HOW MANY WATERMELONS PER PLANT? This varies per plant but you will see more veins and flowers throughout your garden as that is the way melons grow. But per plant only a possible 4 maximum melons. (3) PRUNING WATERMELONS: NO! No need to do so. Since they grow as veins you could damage a vital part of their growth process. I would not encourage any type of pruning for watermelons. Allow them to be free and grow fully. I hope you now have a better understanding about growing watermelons and the role you play and nature plays in this process. Rocks or a few stones can also be placed in the container before you put the soil in there also for drainage. SOIL: I mixed it with soil from my yard and base soil from my local home depot. I sometimes will buy soil specific for veggies and still mix it with the soil in my yard. Let me know how yours grow.....

  • @KimberlyCaresForU

Hi Jennifer, Sorry for the extremely late response. USING NEWSPAPER IN MY GARDEN: Yes I use it as an inexpensive way to block weeds. This is also because I had newspaper around my home and saw a very good use for it.. (this is my personal choice to use the newspaper others may not suggest it since it has printed ink on the paper) My personal experience is I have never been concerned about that since I cut a large open space around the base of the plants when using newspaper or I only use it in thick layers under my vine growing plants. WEED BLOCKERS: You can also buy weed blocking cloth to cover your entire gardening space but you must still clean the area up so as to limit the amount of weeds that may attempt to push through your blockers.. You can purchase these online or at any gardening store. Hey Hamza, Sorry for the extremely late response.. CONTAINER GARDEN VS WATERMELONS- Well the size of the container was not an issue since watermelons grow like a vine. The soil was not compacted but stable enough to hold the plant inside the container.. So you can plant a watermelon plant in any medium to large container simply because of how it grows.. GROWING WATERMELONS INDOORS: Yes all fruits and vegetables can be grown indoors or a greenhouse. This requires a lot more work since you have to balance out and control the light, heat and drainage. HOW DID MY CONTAINER MELONS DO: They actually did very well. I planned ahead so I made sure of all the basics in growing my melons and space necessary for them to thrive. ARE WATERMELONS HARD TO GROW: I would say no.. Watermelons need 4 things. (1) High Temps (2).Balance Watering (3). Good Drainage & (4) Bees to help pollinate the flowers. Tilled the soil with nothing added. Just raw ground. Miracle grow is a great base soil to also use to promote growth without it being drowned in varied chemicals.

Watering ..without getting to technical I would just physically check the soil with my finger to make sure it was moist on a weekly bases.. Watermelon soil must be kept moist and the warmer the soil the better the growth. Watermelons roots love to be kept as warm as possible which is why most Gardners will cover base of plants with black weed barriers

+Aziz azizjasm Sorry just a standard container I got from either Walmart or any Dollar store... The depth can vary but should be for any plant enough to allow at least two bags of soil and pending on the plant enough spacing for root growth.... 17 Gallon & up

+Aziz azizjasm get a fabric bag, like a wal-mart shopping bag, and use that as a container. The plant's roots get better aeration and the plant cannot become root bound. Instead of the roots hitting the side of the container and growing around the root ball, choking it, the roots grow through the fabric, see the sun and self prune. This is allow you to grow bigger plants in a smaller container. Also, it's almost impossible to over water a plant in a fabric pot because of their better drainage. You also posted, "How much you need in order to grow and whether the soil only Batamos any organic manure Is possible to mix the soil with Alaptmos how much water you need in the summer" How you mix your soil is a personal thing, like your favorite recipe for mom's meatloaf, everyone's is a bit different. To mix a basic soil for growing veggies use a simple three part formula. One part organic material, like compost, manure, earth worm castings, blood meal,........ there's a lot to choose from, but a good compost is enough for most veggies. Earthworm castings are always good to add and can sometimes be found at local worm farms. One part a neutral base like coco coir or sphagnum peat moss, this gives bulk to your soil and does a lot of the water retention. And the last part needs to be some sort of aerator like pearlite, rice hulls, green sand, or the like. This stops your soil from getting too compacted and allows for places for healthy bacteria to grow, and little places where air can get to the roots. This easy three part mix, compost, coco coir, and pearlite, is a great way to get started and will grow most any veggie you throw at it :) IF you're in a fabric bag, you can keep the soil a bit moister than if it is in a pot, and watermelon will like that. Don't let your soil dry out, you'll kill it, yes it's alive. Well, the stuff in it that feeds the plants is, worms, bacteria, molds, fungi, etc, They all need to be kept alive, and that means not letting it dry out beyond the first inch of soil. If where you live is hot, cover your soil with some grass clippings. It will act as an insulator and help keep your soil healthy. Don't over water them, you want it moist, not damp, and never wet. :)

Hi Veronica, Sorry for the extremely late response. lol Thank you.. If you have an area on your porch front or back that gets 6-8 hours of sunlight you can have a container garden. It may help if you still live in that area to get the kids to plant with you so they can see the value in gardening and want to watch them grow instead. Let me know how it went or if you need any other gardening tips you can book me for a private virtual gardening session and show me your desired planting area. Hey beautyinarush I put newspaper in my garden for 2 reasons. 1). MAIN REASON: --Blocks weeds in garden. 2) . Allows me to have a much clearer look within in my garden. . For a much better look to your garden you can place the newspaper down and then put cedar mulch ontop of it.

Donaven Moon Consider that to be a vertical garden.. Which I have planted assorted melons that way and they developed just fine.... such as cantaloupe and honeydew melons... WATERMELON GROWTH: You can train your vines to grow as they normally do which is as a ground cover... Especially with watermelons is this.best unless you have constructed or have a very long or high extremely stable vertical stand or wall that can hold the weight of each melon and will not cause stress or strain on the view from the weight of each mellon. ..
