It’s lovely you are sharing your knowledge online, however I would never teach this as a primary method. This looks like a difficult way to get the job done, but it’s a good fallback method if you get behind on things and you are forced to weave the plants AFTER they have grown. How I learned to do it is put the wires up BEFORE plants grow, and you just push or pull the growing tips of the plants to alternating sides of the wires as they grow taller. Wire is stronger than plastic and reused each year. This method is easier with tall plants, it’s faster, damages plants and fruit less, and you get a straighter line, which allows for better access. A 8’ high wire is good for indeterminate plants in a short northern New England season. (I am from Maine). Everyone knows indeterminate tomato plants are often overhead, so the height you are recommending for indeterminate plants is low. The stakes can be very far apart if you are strong. The distance apart depends on how much load the wire will hold without sagging, how deep you are able to drive your stakes, and how tight you are able to make the wire. I am not good at that part because I am 5’2”, and I am not a professional do I don’t have fencing equipment. The culture and IPM reasons for doing this are excellent. Growing and storing enough food to eat year round in a very short season are nearly lost skills. Keep posting videos! It’s one of the best uses of our tax dollars. Ag Extension should be refunded!

When pruning basket weaved tomatoes we typically only remove the lowest two or three suckers on the plant. Tying the string between the stakes tight does cause some abrasion to the tomato plant though in most cases the damage is insignificant.

Awesome, nice job and thank you. I've got a few wood tree stakes, an unused section of copper tubing, and crochet twine kicking around. Gonna be fun to try out this summer. My only concern is if the crochet twine is strong enough to support the tomatoes. Seems like all you'd need is one break and the whole thing is compromised.

@859royalseed - Pruning is optional. If you have the time pruning up to the first flower cluster is beneficial.

Thank you!!! Using the PVC pipe as a wand is an absolutely brilliant idea and will be an easier method for the Florida weave I've been doing Right now my twine keeps tangling up on the plants when I'm stringing the horizontal lines. There's also the hazard of the dog that runs off with the ball of twine, sigh. I guess if I started the weave when the plants were smaller I'd no doubt find it easier.

Determinant means all the tomatoes ripen late and at the same time, which is good for machine harvesting. Indeterminant are the ones that produce fruit over a longer range of time but they need to be able to grow during this which is why he recommends the taller stakes for indets.

The indeterminate plants just keep growing until they run out of warm season (or disease gets them); the determinate varieties have a fixed size they will reach.

hehe you have a point,, but outside growing tomato plants often dont grow as high as the ones in say a greenhouse. but also if the stick is to tall it get harder to put the tread around the top. hehe if he want higher sticks later he can eighter splice a stick to the top of an old one ore add a longer stick later. many farmers also cut the top off the plant when its high enough,,, it forces the plant to grow wide insted of tall.

@@samkom33 My indeterminate tomato plants grow outside and get 12 feet high. I hang them from string that is secured to galvanized wire that is strung horizontal above between poles. I use plastic clips to secure them to string that is hung from the wire. And you do not top them to make them bushy. If you grow determinate tomatoes, then topping can work but is not necessary. And my determinate tomatoes get so bushy that a stake is inadequate to support them to maturity. I use cages for determinates.
