How to grow Strawberry Guava + Taste test | Backyard Foodforest | Delicious, hardy and disease-free!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Strawberry Guava is one of our favourite fruits to grow - it’s drought-tolerant, disease-resistant and delicious. One of the toughest fruits in our foodforest, yet produces delicious fruit with a delicate strawberry flavour.
A wonderful addition to the tricky dry shade positions in the lower-canopy of a food forest. Did you know both the fruit and leaves are edible? Watch our video tutorial below to see how we grow ours in our Foodforest including a harvest and taste test.

I have the lemon guava tree. It’s a very hardy fruit tree. It’s the second year in ground and it gives me lots of fruit. I’m in zone 9A Texas and it does very well in my yard. Mine gets plenty of direct sunlight.

It sounds like you have a thriving lemon guava! We have planted one next to our strawberry guava, still a baby and producing its first fruits the past year. We look forward to harvests as good as yours in the coming years 💚
:D I ate a lot of those in my life. They are native to Brazil. The Tupi (one of the natives languages) name is "Araçá" (abundant fruit) and sone variations could be "fruit with eyes".

I just bought a baby strawberry guava, this video has made me excited. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video! 😊👍
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Those strawberry guavas look so delicious.
Lovely healthy plant!. I’ve just been given a cherry guava, so found your video very interesting and helpful. Thanks for sharing ❤️
Very informative video. Thanks. I had two in my cart and was looking for videos before purchasing and your video is the best for information.
I planted 3 plants here in Jamaica 6 months ago. Hopefully, I can get fruit in another year. Thank you for your video.
I have one growing in central coast California and its jest started producing flowers!! So happy :’)
Thanks sooooo much. I have one in a pot, deciding where to plant it, first thought was a stand alone tree in the paddock between me and my messy neighbour, now I'm going to plant two trees in that space, one is a mulberry and the second will be my strawberry guava as an understory.
Thank you so much. This video has sold me on my research when buying one from our local farmer at Noble Roots in Eustis, Florida

I have a strawberry guava tree in my back yard they taste delicious, but they are native to Brazil cause when I was in Mexico I never saw one of those types of guavas only the green sower ones which are green in color.
Liked and subscribed and fascinated to find all kinds of Guava since Feijoas are called Pineapple Guava. I love winter fruits like Tamarillo and Feijoa.Will watch all your videos eventually .
My strawberry guava it’s first time fruit and very small fruit 😊 Your tree got lots and big fruits 🥰
Hello my friend. Thank you for sharing
Looks like it would make a great jam and juice if you resist eating them all. 😊

Thanks Jian, we have one of these in a pot but I wasn’t sure what it produced as we haven’t seen any fruit yet. I will give it some more attention 👍🏻

I have some in pots, but they're not exactly pretty house plants. I give them generous amount of fertilizer, so maybe it will look better when it gets more tree-like size. Still they're one of the most loved of my plants❤
i got one we even had some last week in in September its sweet when its dark but it drops and the birds like them to we are in south east melbourne
Hello there, I'm so enjoying your videos. I'm also from Melbourne. Looking at your garden, there would be some shady spots. Apart from strawberry gauva which can thrive in shade, would you know if there is any other fruit trees which do well in shade as well? Thanks.
Good to know I got yellow and red still in a pot
Hi thank you heaps for your amazing Video ... can it be planted in Big Pots ? Please
Hi Jian, I really love your channel. Could you do a video on fruit that you can grow in the shade? Thank you
@MelbourneFoodforest

Thank you for your support! Yes that is definitely on our to-do list - a video of all shade loving plants 💚💚
WOW they look great do you sell & post seeds for them
Do you think they will do just as well in full sun at all?
I just got 1 I’m in nz should I plant it out? It’s about 70cm tall, it’s just grown some new leaves
I’ve watched other KZread videos on the Strawberry Guava and a few have complained that they find the hard seeds annoying, though they love the flavor. What is your opinion?
where would i buy a strawberry guava cutting/sapling ?
Hi - i got rid of my Strawberry Guava but now grow a premium select Yellow Lemon Guave size of a golf ball - get one you will do the same. Seeds are softer - the only Guava i grow in Melbourne i eat everything
I have never been to Australia, so I don't know the situation there. But strawberry guava is an incredibly invasive pest species that takes over large areas in Hawaii. I would think carefully before planting it. As you say, it is one of the toughest plants. Almost impossible to get rid of.

@@gbb82 you should definitely look into it. You really don't want to bring an invasive plant into an area.
Great info, thanks. I'm looking for an evergreen edible to replace a diseased non-edible tree. I noted yours doesn't suffer from pests pressures. We have resident possums (common and ringtail) and was wondering if you knew whether possums enjoy a strawberry guava.
@MelbourneFoodforest
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nathan, when he had ours in a pot near the fencline the possum did go for it a little - but only in winter when they had no other food sources. It's not their first choice, but if they didn't have other good food sources they could potentially have a go at your Strawberry Guava. Having said that, it is a fairly quick grower and if you protected it a bit in the first few years I think it would withstand any attack. Otherwise citrus is always a safe bet, generally possums only go for as a very last resort 💚💚
I have a beautiful tree close to 5meters tall.Its a very old tree in woodburn nsw .The fruit are always full of grubs,My grandfather used to spray it to stop the grubs.But i dont like the idea of to chemicals and then eating the fruit
I have strawberry guava tree in the pot for 2 years now , there’s a lot of flowers but no fruit the flowers turn to brown and fell. Pls. Advise. Thanks.
How well does the STRAWBERRY GUAVA tree in DALLAS, TX (Zone 8)?
I may have a couple large tree ones in my yard, plus a small bush one - leaves and fruit match- what is the chance of me being wrong, any look alikes?
I live in Perth, but my strawberry guava keeps getting black spots I've sprayed liquid copper but it doesn't help lol
@MelbourneFoodforest
Жыл бұрын
Hi Juan, that's really frustrating - usually the strawberry guava should be quite tough and resistant to black spot. It might be worth looking into your soil to see if something is going on there - a drainage issue, pH or lack of trace elements? Or perhaps your area is too humid and it would benefit from moving to a sunnier spot? Keep persisting with it, it's worth it 💚
Are lemon guavas equally as hardy? Thanks 😊
@MelbourneFoodforest

They sure are, we have one in the video planted in the same location - less than a year old since we bought it but already fruiting! Taste is not quite as delicate in my opinion, but still a wonderful fruit to grow 💚

I have 15 of these strawberry/lemon guava's in CA. They continuously flower but never set fruit even though a few of them were sold to me with tons of fruit on them 1-2 years ago. I am at a loss as to why the flowers open, then expire and then fall off.

Most likely not legal. Because like Hawaii could devestate endemic plants and may not be allowed but not sure! I know the at at airport won’t let you take or bring I. Anything foreign or considered a threat to our fragile ecosystem!🤙🏽
Hi I live in Kentucky, USA, zone 7A. Burning hot summers and freezing cold Winters. Will these grow here? I just found your videos tonight and I love them, they're so informative, you're so pleasant. God bless you Jude, from Kentucky ✝️🐴🇺🇸🌿❣️
If you have them near your fence line, we will eat them muahahaha
Unfortunately n Hawai’i Nei “Waiwi” is an invasive species and has had a detrimental affect to the endemic and indigenous plants a trees in our forest because landscapers brought it in as an ornamental garden shrub and now like banana Poka and Miconia are killlng our forest. So I’d be careful planting this near forest reserves since birds love the fruit too! And that’s how it’s germinated to our precious forests. The fruit make great jams! But sadly at what cost? They are aggressive and will crowd out and eventually displacing our beautiful endangered flora and fauna!🥲 We call them in Hawaiian “Waiwi” (Vai-Vee) or “Strawberry” Guava but usually not the fruit used in “Strawberry Guava” Desserts or drinks. Those are usually real strawberry and pink or red guava mixed together. So caveat emptor!🤙🏽🙏🏽
Can you do a video on how the seeds look like because I think I got scammed and bought strawberry seeds that where support to be Elwyn Elwyn 50pcs Dwarf PineappleStrawberry Guava Fruit Seeds, 50 $14.99
