It is also important that Spanish moss has good air circulation and that it dries within 2 hours after watering, which is important to avoid mold on the inside. If you make sure that the moss remains very airy, by regularly untangling it with your fingers and not letting the strand become too thick and compact, you will enjoy it for a long time! Succes en Greetings from Belgium !

Thank you all points noted, I have reasonable success growing it but I’ll try untangling it from now on, mine also grows in trays which have water at the bottom and still grows ok. Happy growing.

Good idea for a video Mick, I water mine with my pressure sprayer but tend not to do it too much in the winter as the humidity takes care of a lot. I also soak it in situ in the summer and, like you, use it to shade certain orchids during the summer months. Every day during the summer I turn the pressure sprayer on it and leave it dripping as it is an extra boost for humidity in the hot weather. The thicker one is definitely the better one. Take care.

IMO you can over-fertilise Spanish Moss. I bought some with an air plant at a show and it is no-ID. Some broke off and I draped it over the roots of one of my Vandas. The main plant gets fertilised once in a blue moon and gets dunked in rainwater for a few minutes anything from once a week now to two or three times a week in summer. The Vanda gets dunked in fertilised water several times a week in summer and alternately fertiliser and rainwater now. The main plant is doing much better. I treat all my air plants in a similar fashion to the main plant and they're all doing well.

Sounds good Keith, if it ever gets fertilised it’s when I have a bucket 🪣 full after watering my mounts I sometimes drop it in but it’s not fed intentionally, but I might give it a feed every now and again next season.

I live in Perth West Australia, and my Spanish moss grows in full sun or shade, multiplies rapidly, and I use a 13 litre sprayer with very well diluted hydroponic solution weekly. Couldn’t dunk them in a bucket as far too many. I started off with 5 bunches about 10 years ago, now they hang everywhere, they go well with air plants and bromeliads. Cheers.

I have some in my room. I got it from a nice lady in FL from etsy.I use aquarium water and soak it in a bucket once per week, and mist it in between the soakings. I am weary of using ro water, as it is 100% pure and can strip nutrients. I had another large piece before these ones, but it was hung on a metal hanger and i suspect that killed it. This time, I have the moss mounted on a coconut husk, and a tree branch, fastened with rope, and plastic zip ties. No metal whatsoever. Hopefully it does well.

In its natural habitat it hangs from tree branches blowing in the wind, I’ve got some growing around the top of a plant, remember it has to grow the correct way not upside down so I doubt if it’ll grow in a vase.
