How To Grow Potatoes Indoors - Part 1 of 3
Grow Baby Potatoes Indoors, Anytime Of Year! It is the beginning of winter...Christmas Eve in fact, and the thought of waiting another 7 months for fresh organic Potatoes from my own garden in downright awful. Let's solve this by growing some Potatoes of our own indoors and beat those winter blues!
This is a 3-part series where we take regular grocery store potatoes, wash and chit them to cause them to sprout, ready for planting inside this holiday season. We also touch on the soil we're going to use, the meaning of "hilling your potatoes" and why we do it, the lighting requirements, as well, even a scale model of the Potato planter box that we'll be building for the video in Part 2! Follow along and grow your own indoor Potatoes with us!

I asked Santa for a white Christmas and he looked at me and laughed, "Ho, ho, ho." Here in central WA where I live, snow has come as early as October 31. Usually we will have a white Christmas; but, unless it snows a few inches over night, it doesn't look like we will. I have never thought about growing potatoes indoors; but, I don't really have the space. I will stay tuned for the continuation of this project. Even if I can't do it, it will be fun to watch how it works out for you.

Hey y'all ! I had a brilliant idea for these indoor potatoes!! I already grow my potatoes in grow bags and hill with a chopped straw/soil mixture - and have great success. I think if I buy 3 smaller bags (maybe 12-15") and out them in a boot tray I'll be able to bottom water them without any mess. I plan to put them under my work table with a grow light hung from the bottom of the table. What do y'all think?

Hey Mike, the best way is to first cure the potatoes at around 15C for 2 weeks to get them to produce a nice skin. After that, a cool (7C), dark place and they should last at least a couple of months. You can pack them in shredded paper so that they don't touch each other as well.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms It's going to be interesting to see exactly what you're after and how this works out. @@mudpiemudpie785 Definitely...that is basically the same concept. You're limited to one big harvest still though because you have to destroy the plant to get to the potatoes. @@mudpiemudpie785 Yes, the Ruth Stout method is basically every video I make. No-dig, no-till lasagna, sheet mulching etc. Not so beneficial in closed systems like an indoor planter box or large container....its more used in actual plots of land or at the very least, open-bottomed raised beds like I do. Its all about regenerating the soil...with container gardening, its a finite system usually compost of potting soil, without access to the microbes and other organisms found in actual earth.
