Ive asked some good friends over the years what do you think is the perfect food. One genius friend of mine said milk. My other genius friend said eggs. Usually ive said its the legume. If you have legumes , and a fat source(oil) and a fruit for Vit.C ..you really have everything needed. And peas are my fav. Thanks. Glory to God.

South Carolina, here. I had a bunch of old snow pea seed from my stash last season. So I germinated some in my heat bed to see how well they would do. They all sprouted! So I planted them out, somewhere in February. Well they grew, and lasted all through the winter. They survived the cold, and we had a few nights down into single digits. Then, when spring came, they took off and produced. I now consider them one of my fall and winter staples.

I'm embarrassed to admit that the consecutive planting of snow peas in my garden are for me to snack on when I'm gardening. They never make it inside the house 🤣

Sorry I can't be at the chat Jeff, but I'll watch the replay. I planted Alaska Peas this year for the first time. I bought them from Baker Creek. They are frost hardy and will grow well in U.S. zone 3a. We are in 4a I have never grown peas that have climbed so high. We have one trellis that is 5 foot high and these peas are 2 foot plus beyond that. The pods are 2 inches long with 5 or 6 peas inside. They may be short, but man there are a huge amount of pods! Hanging like grapes. Have you ever experienced peas like that. We have grow peas every year, but nothing like these. I did notice that they do need some shade. The one trellis gets a lot of sun during the day and that group needs daily watering. The other group gets half the sunshine and needs less water. Take care!

Hi👋 from one of your Aussie subs - another tops video! The funny thing is, I was standing at the sink, washing and preparing a colander of snow peas I just picked out in the backyard, and a couple of homegrown choko (chayote) too - it's stirfry tonight! I was listening to a music KZread video while I worked which ended and then this pea video of yours started up automatically, just as I top & tailed my first pea (cue Twilight Zone music). Coincidence? 🤔 lol! (but if the next video that pops up automatically is something to do with chayote....🤯🤣) Seriously though, love your vids, thanks! 😁👍

I'm growing Cascadia bush peas. The pods are edible according to Ed Hume. I've grown bush peas in the past; but, where I live the hot weather comes in July. I planted my peas in May after the snow had gone away. It took the peas about a week or two before the sprouts started popping through the soil. I planted two different types of bush beans at the same time. Both peas and beans have flowers; but, so far that's about it. I'm really wanting fresh peas and beans this year. I grew my tomatoes from seed and they are still not very tall. But, it's too late for me to get tomato plants from the garden center. We had a couple 90 degree days in June; but, it didn't really warm up until now. I'm hoping we have a late frost so that my tomatoes, cucumbers, and peas and beans produce. The collards and kale are doing pretty good; but, I think the earwigs are getting to them.

Great update Donna. I agree about the weather...its just wrecking havoc on even the simplest crops to grow. Hopefully we can adapt and figure it out as we go along.....

Thanks for another educational video. I'm supposed to be resting my shoulder till I see the ortho the morrow, but we had a massive thunder storm last eve and till today I haven't been in my garden since I got hurt last Saturday. All kinds of things are happening in my garden, including we're having way too much windy rain on 5 of 8 eves which I fear is bad for some of my plants. You asked me to keep you updated on my 15 pea & bean soup experiment in the garden. Thus far they're shooting for the sun....especially my sunflower's stalks which have grown over a foot since last wknd. I have NO clue what these little miracles are going to do. I'm just having a blast being in the center of this ever-growing world. Oh yeah, I picked my 1st Gypsy pepper today too. Its still a lime color, but its almost 5" long & I thought the Mum plant deserved a holiday. Take care, ~ Covah

Peas are my favorite garden treat ♥️ their only competition are tomatoes.. but they come later for me. My peas never make it to the kitchen.. I pick and munch on them when I’m in the garden.

Same here Ruth! The Snow Peas just get decimated before we make it back to the house, LOL!

Interesting fact: the words legume and legend are linked to the same root word! Yes, beans and peas are legendary :)

Here in the PNW slugs can decimate direct planted peas in the spring. I haven't had any issues transplanting, and then once I know those are taking off I will direct sow a succession crop. This gives me a nice supply of peas from my 8' pea walls.

Thanks so much! Yes, you can work around your hot season....should be able to plant twice. Once during your hot season for harvest when it cools off, then well before for harvest prior to the temperatures rising. Best of luck!

I plamted my peas about a half inch apart and they've made a green wall of peas. I find they dont being crowded.

Perfect! Not all varieties react the same way....its more of a general rule than a hard one...

Not sure what variety they are. They're the flat pods at first then fill out. No strings in the pods.

Your livestock will love the expended vines!!

Newbie gardener here, I only started gardening in March and peas were some of the first seeds I sowed. The days to harvest were exactly what the package said, almost to the day. But the plants didn't get very big and were definitely not prolific... only a few pods on each plant. They are in a spot that gets afternoon sun only, so I'll try in a different spot and see if that makes a difference. I'm gardening in containers and am limited as to where I can put plants, so I'm still figuring out what goes where.

Exactly Claire, it's all about testing and experimenting for your spot... Find the best places for each crop, each year. It's always a work in progress, especially if you are just starting out. :-)

Jeff where do you get your cover mulch straw from? The only thing I can find is rough cut wheat straw.

Hey Miguel! For peas, I find waiting until the SOIL temperature hits 10C is your best bet. Peas seeds rot fairly easily in cold soil....you want them to basically germinate right away. So you gotta wait until it warms up, rather than a hard-coded date on the calendar. :-)

Another cheap and easy 2 grow crop who like shades is olive cucumber. They love to climbe tho.

what would you say about feeding peas to worm bins.

Since we are in surival mode it should have been mentioned that peas shoots are delicious

I'm not a huge fan of peas. The only ones I really like are the small leisure peas from the store. Maybe I just need to try growing them. Maybe they are a lot better than the store bought. Do you have a recommendation of a type that I can grow that are tender and small and can be canned? Thanks. I enjoy your videos. They are very informative.

Hey julia, you know what, its the Snow Peas that do it for me, Pod and all.....nothing is sweeter. Right off the vine, I honestly can't get enough of them! If you like stir frys, spicy pea pods mixed in? AMAZING! 🙂

QUESTION Jeff: For container peas what would you suggest as the smallest container to grow peas in? I’m sure the the bigger the better but what can we get away with? Thanks!

2 or 3 vines in a 1 gallon pot can definitely work! However, when they get tall, they can act as a sail, so smaller pots run the real risk of falling over in the wind. But in terms of space for the roots, they don't need much! 🙂

Mine come up and then get yellow at die. Even i put a stick but they seem very weak with climb

Do peas need pollinators for pea formation? I had covered mine with tulle material because the birds were destroying the plants. I uncovered them when they began to bloom. And once again the birds are the leaves AND the pea pods. So if they do not need pollution, I will leave them covered!! Thanks!!

I live in the Middle East and unfortunately this winter is missing the rain and cold (we have a warmer climate here any way, but the other day I was telling a small child that the season is winter and they couldn’t believe it, I told them that this winter is missing rain, the child looked as me as if I were a fool, couldn’t believe it was winter.), it is my first year starting a veggie garden, the seed packet I got claims you could sow this verity of garden peas year round, is it possible to grow peas in a warmer climate (19c +)?

There should be varieties more tailor made to your climate sold locally.,....I'd trust those ones first. But definitely try to grow in the coolest months of the year.

I bought snap pea plants and they are they only plant failing. I have raised beds and my peas are near cilantro and honeydew. The bed next to them has tomatoes. All these plants are doing fantastic but the pea plants 🤔😢 Illinois USA

My sweet peas hardly ever make it inside. I eat them as soon as I pick them lol.

Worth remembering, medieval times means NO POTATOES. So peas were saved and dried and cooked to feed ppl during winter when there was little food. Farmers had to grow EVERYTHING they ate. Thats why they didnt eat them fresh. They were also a field crop. Huge amounts were grown. Remember, no potatoes back then.

Cool. My peas are 10 ft tall maybe higher. I experiment and they are strong here it's windy alot. I trained them to be strong. I mist the. off several times a day the. Blasts of hi pressure water makes my peas stronger I see neighbors with sad look peas. It's all about manipulation of the plant. Play god. We are god to plants. We can make them stronger
