Mountain hydrangeas are the least common mophead (macrophylla). These shrubs are native to Japan and are deciduous. Hydrangea serrata grow in zones 5 to 9. Mountain hydrangeas are typically smaller and more compact than other mophead hydrangeas.
The leaves are dark green and serrated like other macrophylla. The leaves are commonly used in tea, as they contain a natural sweetener phyllodulcin. The tea is known as sugukcha in Korea and amacha in Japan. Amacha is used in Japan to celebrate Buddha’s birth. A common name of this tea is tea of heaven.
The flowers are closer to lacecap hydrangeas, with smaller florets in the center surrounded by larger florets. The blooms are either blue or pink depending on the acidity of the soil. The flowers will be blue in higher acidic soils and lilac to pink in alkaline soils.

    I had the old style mop head blue hydrangeas, they stopped blooming for 3 yrs. I dug them up, got a PW little quick fire paniculatta, absolutely love it! And the following year I got an endless summer twist and shout which I think is a mountain hydrangea which I planted in a shady spot. I find both of them to be much easier to take care of and both are covered in blooms and pollinators constantly. Never seen any pollinators on the old mop heads.

    Well guys, I have a confession🙄 I have purchased a total of 10 new hydrangeas in the last 3 or so weeks. It is safe to say that I have a problem😃 I cannot believe how once you plant one, you are hooked. That being said, as a newbie to these gorgeous plants, I love learning how to care for the different varieties. Continue that lovely chatter💚🏵🌱

    Perfect timing on this video for me! I bought Tiny Tuff Stuff in April by mail. She won't bloom this year but is growing well so I love hearing your experiences and seeing the photos. I also got this variety for the pollinators & I have a small space for planting. I've ordered a second Tiny Tuff Stuff to plant this fall. Your info is much appreciated.

    Your video is such a help, Thank you! My mother gave me a little pink one a few years ago... I'm pretty sure it's a mountain hydrangea... I could not get it to re bloom since I 1st received it. The leaves have been beautiful and green and it's getting larger but no flowers.🤷‍♀️ It was in front where the most sun hits though. I just dug it up and relocated it to a more shaded area with no other plants around it in the back of my home. Praying it will take to the new spot and it's not too much shade!🤞😅💛

    Hello Mr. and Mrs. I just found your channel the other day 😊. First of all, you two are an adorable couple. I too have a love for hydrangeas. Aren’t they just the BEST?? I’m officially a senior on the 17th of July…..I’m a widow of 10 years and would love for the Lord to bless me with a friend to garden with. Question about arborvitae…..I still have two small plants in pots right now….gallon size nursery containers. I’m really thinking about keeping them in containers. What size containers do you suggest I get? Do they grow fast? Again, I’m so happy to meet you. God bless your new home. I can really feel the love and respect coming through the tv. ♥️

    Hi Guys! Yes I have heard the same thing that any reblooming hydrangeas need a second application of fertilizer to perform well. Otherwise just once in the late Winter, Spring will suffice.

    Just found this older video of yours, now I know how to turn them blue....mine are pale pink. How much soil acidifier should I use and when? Also how did you get your pink ones so vibrantly pink? I would love to change the two I have to dark blue and dark pink. Sadly I cannot get the hollytone or bloom or flowertone in Canada. Can you recommend something I can find in Canada? You are also right about the watering, I have to water them twice a day in this 30C weather and my incrediballs too.

So I have been trying to find out what kind of hydrangea they are. I live in zone 10B and I placed them in area that they have morning sun. So far they are doing ok

    Hello neighbor! The hydrangeas are starting to get ready to hibernate correct. If they are not rebloomers most of the time you will see their flowers brown up and leaves start to fall. Mine are looking pretty bad after the rains we’ve had and starting to loose leaves. 💐💚

    Hi. Awesome information. Question: If I get my hydrangea and I am ready to plant it in a container, apart from the organic potting soil and the bio tone, do I also give it a first boost og hollytone as I plant it in its container? Thank you so much for all the awesome information.

  • @GardenObsessions

    @GardenObsessions

    Hello! Congratulations on your new hydrangea! If you are planting a new and adding Bio Tone no need to add holly tone. Later in the season around mid summer if it’s a reblooming hydrangea holly tone can be added. 💚
