great info! I've been growing reds in my saltwater and freshwater tanks for a few years. I was looking for info on black mangroves since I just got 14 little seedlings in and saw this video. I'm going to try potting some of these and some reds like you do.

great video! My dad and I have been growing mangroves from propogules with all kinds of methods here in East/Central FL. After hearing your fertilizer it sounds like i really need to give them a lot more. I've been trying to train plants to make big solid prop roots but the ones that get left alone with an air conditioner condensate drain on the side of the house giving them consistent water and no attention do the best all around. please do an update video on anything you've learned since this video!

I'm unable to do an update as I stopped growing mangroves years ago. After college space became limited, and the grow lights they required as they got larger were too expensive for me to bother with.

@@JCPGator Depends. It's not anything that could be considered true bonsai, however you can keep them pruned back and back budding to keep them a bit more compact. the white and black variety worked a bit better than the red variety.

Can you use coffee grounds as fertilizer for mangroves?

Can you please make a video on how to grow them indoors with freshwater, but in a very simple way? I live in south Florida and I'm making an Everglades fishing themed room. I'd like to have some potted mangroves in the room! I'm not sure how to properly fertilize them and so on.

Chris the most important thing is the light. Buy the strongest lights you can. Florescent lights from the hardware store with 6500K 1500 lumen bulbs are ok for them to survive, but if you can invest in high power growlights like the ones weed growers use I would buy those. Fertilizer for these is easy, they like anything. Osmocote pellets, 20-20-20 miracle grow water soluble fertilizer, also bone meal, blood meal, and fish emulsion but it smell like a garbage dump if you use me the last three fertilizers indoors. Pretty much any standard fertilizer will work.

Wolfpath Wildlife Ok great. I actually have powerful led lights from my reef tank I sold! I live fairly close to where there are mangroves. So should I pick up a few "stubs" (not sure the name) that are floating in the water and try to germinate those in a pot with sphagnum moss, sand, and soaked in water? I guess the hardest part will be getting them to germinate.. I can of course put them outside to help speed things up since they'll get the natural sunlight they'd be getting if I hadn't picked them up.

Chris the term is "propagules" . Not sure if sphagnum moss is the best option. A mix of sand and peat moss is much better. You should have no problems germinating them, since they are quite vigorous. Even if they are just floating around in water they will start to send out roots and leaves after a few weeks.

I would like to grow them in freshwater, so if I collect them from either full saltwater and/or brackish water can I transfer them directly to the freshwater? Or would I have to slowly acclimate them over a few weeks/months?

Chris I used to think that acclimation was the way to go since someone once chewed me out on an earlier KZread vid about slowly transitioning mangroves and them requiring saltwater. Now that I have been growing them for 8 years I can say it really doesn't matter. You can stick them in freshwater and grow them in it from the beginning even if you collected the propagules from the ocean.

The thicker part, if it’s a red mangrove it’s the brown half that goes in the soil.

Hi mate, I grow red mangrove in my freshwater aquarium. I bought for them 70watt wrgb led light. So far it’s good how they grow. It’s going to be freshwater tank so my soil is can not be how you have. Right now they are 60 cm tall and let’s see how far I can go ;)

If you have a good substrate they should be fine. I eventually transitioned them from brackish water to full freshwater due to laziness and they were fine. The reason I have them in pots is so that I could move them around easier, like into this greenhouse, fertilize without algae issues, and to have a deep substrate to thicken the trunk. I have had issues with sand getting stagnant anaerobic areas when I've used it in aquariums before, but these days there are nicer substrates to use in the hobby like Fluval Stratum or the cheaper Seachem Flourite, which should function better than trying to use soil and sand in an aquarium.

I live near Jacksonville FL how would a mangrove do in winter? It gets cold, but it doesn't too extreme brief frosts but the winters are really mild.

Do you put a pump in the water? How about water heater when the climate gets cold (similar to aquarium heaters)?

RV Mitra I do put a pump in the water basin when they are inside. No heater though. Room temp water is fine.

Don't you ever ever have problems with root rot? Don't the roots need some circulation/oxygen? I had one die on me this winter and I can't figure out why. It seemed to be doing fine during the summer, even with some algea bloom in its container. Had it in a glass vase with aqaurium store river sand, full of water and a bit of fertilizer. It was on a south facing window, inside the whole time. Might also have been lack of light or too cold maybe. I don't think it ever got below 55ish F. The leaves just got really droopy at some point over night. I moved it to a warmer, lighter spot right away and then the whole plant started to brown/blacken very slowly regardless. But when I pulled it out the sand the roots looked kinda blackish and smelled bad. Just trying to figure out what to improve for next time. Any thoughts are highly apreciated!

When you use pure sand as the substrate it can get anaerobic areas. With soil the biological cycle is much better, with less chance for stagnation. Its also the reason why you see me using regular pots, which I can remove from the tray and water them like regular plants a few times over the course of half an hour to flush the soil, then also change the water in the tray completely. Your set up may look very similar to their natural habitat but biologically it's not functioning the same way.

I live in Miami, Florida, and wanted to plant the mangrove propagules at my house, not sure if I can plant them anywhere in my yard, since the soil here is already kind of sandy in some parts, what would your recommendations be? do I have to follow up with all the nutrients that you mentioned in this video? thanks in advance.

The biggest potential issue you will have is keeping it wet enough as they grow in wetland areas. It could still be possible, and may just require that you water it daily during the drier season. Nutrients will certainly help, but don't feel the need to use all of them. I can't recall what I said in the video to regular water soluble miracle grow fertilizer, bone meal, blood meal, fish emulsion, and osmocote pellets all worked well for me.

Yes, after a few years they should send down aerial roots.

i'm planning to set up a mudskipper tank and will be trying to replicate the mudflat subtrate, which will be clay mixed with sand. this will make a very dense and heavy substrate, can i sow red mangroves in this? or will i need to grow them outside the tank and later transfer them?

Bertrand Gaymard you can trim them similar to other trees and bushes. Often new sprouts will only come out near the previous branching point so try to make cuts above where the previous branches split.

yes they should do very well in that set up. The only thing I don;t like though is that you can't really does the water with fertilizer. The fish waste should be enough though.

I found some yearling specimens in a park in South Florida.I believe most of them are Red Mangroves, although there are 2 that are different and i cant tell what they are, im pretty confident they are mangroves too but just dont know which one. But my main question is, These Red Mangrove specimens i found werent propagules and they were growing quite far from the water, can i still acclimate them to growing on say a freshwater tank or in pots in a tub with water?

You have a lot of stuff down there so they could be black mangroves and white mangroves. Or just young buttonwood trees... I would have to see pictures to confirm. If they are mangroves you can definitely "acclimate" them to growing in deep water, but honestly no acclimation is needed. You can just toss them right in and they will actually do better surrounded by water after being dug up since the roots often get damaged and won't need to be working so hard to get water once flooded. Putting them in buckets of water&mud/sand for a few weeks after transplanting is better than just using the traditional pots and soil.

I like to keep one of everything, and sell any propagations I have to other hobbyists, but sales are rare. It is not my career. I got rid of these mangroves since I no longer have a greenhouse to put them in, and an indoor set up requires too much artificial light. These days I mostly just grow small carnivorous plants.

I've had mine in pure fresh water for a few years and they're doing pretty good. Other people have done experiments as well where they had half in saltwater and half in freshwater and the ones in freshwater did better. I've got a bucket full of the propagules and probably will collect more on the beach the next few days so I could split them into three containers (fresh, brackish, and salt) to see if the brackish is better than both salt or fresh water. I might just leave them in fresh water though...I've gotten more into the snail hobby, and have a room full of terrariums, and I'm still out collecting Orthalicus to bring home, so I kind of doubt I'll have room/time to mess around with a mangrove experiment set up...but I'll be listing a few on ebay so maybe you or someone else could try it if they wanted to.

The best is sandy soil, 50% of each. They will develop faster in fresh water, no salt is necessary. They can adapt to saltwater, but it's not a requirement. If anything I would do brackish or freshwater. For indoor growth at least 10,000 lumens.

I don't know, I don't measure the substrate in weight, I measure by container volume. So for a 1 meter mangrove I would recommend a pot/container with at least a 1/2 meter diameter and at least 1/2 meter deep. It can be deeper than 1/2 meter if you can find one.

Mike Neuzil whoops. Misspoke. 1500 lumens daylight CFLs. Although GT-Lite now makes a 5000 lumen bulb. If possibly I would just get a Mars Hydro LED fixture
