    Every bedding area in my habitat is atop Johnson Grass, Panicum Variety Grass, WIld Rye/ Little Barley, Oats. Fish-on-a-Pole. I've tracked every game trail out here and cleared perfect funnels and food forests all over. All of the natural trail areas without fortification are covered in weeds that match the tone of the deer fun LOL. In my pursuit my property gave me over 25 wild food variety seeds. They grow like wild fire in the native soil. Remember to appreciate earth.

    This is great advice. I plant egyptian wheat every year to screen out roads and other plots. I also use it to cover my access to my stands. I pretty much plant it exactly the same here in Pennsylvania as whitetail obsession with great results every year. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with fellow hunters.

    We’re planting a spring plot mix on our food plots this year. I plan to go in and spray grass out to kill all the grass and weeds except for the chicory and clover that’s there. If we spray say first-mid May here in Arkansas then plant mid to end of May do you think planting Egyptian wheat where we killed everything will be ok or should we spray again where we are going to plant the strips?

    I grew egyptian wheat this year and it came up great. I fertilized at a month and it took off. It got to about 8-10 foot which is perfect for me. The problem I am seeing is it falls over in a lot of places. It looks healthy. It was planted fairly thick if that makes a difference. I have had to stake it up in some places. Other than trying something like incognito that has a sorgum mixed in with it, I'm not sure what else to do next year. Have you ever seen it do this? I haven't had terrible winds or bad storms to knock it over or anything like that so I'm not sure why is keeps doing it.

Spray prior to putting in the seed makes sense is there anything else? I’m going to spray and working fertilizer triple 19 on June 1 and then plan to put the Egyptian week seed in and work up the soil on June 2 or third your comments? Thanks, Drew enjoy your shows.

    Hi thank you I appreciate your video I recently planted about 600 lineal yards of EW in June I’m in southern Carolina it’s a new lease I was unable to have time to get soil tested and I also planted this in over a dozen different areas on the property. Once I planted the EW I also put down 10 1010 fertilizer it appeared everything was going OK many areas where growing better than others which is what I expected. After 4 to 6 weeks I had certain areas 4 foot tall and other areas 2 foot tall but all of a sudden around the sixth week after planting all the bases of the EW began to look brown and appeared to be drying after about two more weeks about 50% of it had dried up and two weeks later 90% of what was planted has completely dried up and is laying on the ground. I understand why its grew better in different areas because of the quality of the soil but is that normal after such a long period of time we’re things look great that 90% or more that was planted die. I don’t know if it’s even possible that the seed was bad even though it germinated and lasted almost 2 months. If you have any helpful information I certainly appreciate it thank you for your time. I’m doing a test this year with 4 feet wide which isn’t idea I just want to see. Ideally best is about 8-10 feet wide that way it’s thick enough to hold itself together, and so deer are less likely to walk through it. When it’s not wide enough they have a tendency to walk though it which then defeats the purpose of a screen

    It would be the same process with planting anything. 1. Soil test 2. Add correct amount of lime ASAP 3. If it’s brand new spot I always spray glyphosate and 2-4d wait 2 weeks and disc it all up. 4. Smooth it out with a drag and then fertilize 5. Drag the fertilizer in. 6. Plant your incognito and either drag that in or you can cultipac it 7. Pray for rain lol.

    So what is the correct broadcasting rate per acre. I m doing a 350ft and 250ft linear length. At 10ft wide. Total 6000sf so that's .138 of an acre. So At 10lbs per acre I m only putting down 1.38lbs? That just doesn't sound like enough. I've seen sugestions of 7lbs per acre to 25lbs per acre when broadcasting not drilling.

  • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

    @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

    The correct seeding rate is about 10-13 pounds per acre. I always round up a extra pound or 2 to compensate for Birds and turkeys eating seed. Some won’t germinate, some get covered to deep etc etc etc. at that size I would do about 2 lbs. if it’s to much it will be very very short and won’t amount to anything.

  • @mrpush2532

    @mrpush2532

    Жыл бұрын

    @@24-se7enoutdoors3 Ok so just multiply lbs/acre times your acreage. So 15lbs/acre x 1 acre would be a full 15 lbs. for half acre, 15x.5 = 7.5 lbs. for 0.04 acre that would be 0.6 lbs seed. If you are putting down small amounts of seed, its often best to go buy some uniform plain unsented clay kitty litter as a buffer for your seeder. Mix the small amount of seed in the litter then you can broadcast mush easier in small sections. So you do a test with the kitty litter. Put a known amount of litter in the spreader (say 5 lbs). Set your spreader setting and go walk your seed area. You want the litter to be gone just about at the end of your walk at you specified setting. If you have a lb of litter left, then only put 4 lbs litter in spreader at that specific setting. Then add your small amount of seed and mix well in that 4 lbs. Go walk it again and you will spread your small amount of seed perfectly without having to fiddle w small amount and low spreader settings. Just make sure you seeds are SMALLER than your litter size. This does work for larger seeds too but you have to use a lot more litter as the spreader setting must be open wide enough to drop the large seeds. i did 10 foot wide sections at around 12 lbs per acre this year. They grew well, but are not wide enough. You can see through them a bit. I would not do less than 15' wide strips or go with a bit more seed (like 15 to 20 lbs per acre) for thicker but lower stands.

    Yea all the time. Hate it lol. Couple things. Use a couple more pounds of seed per acre make sure to cover the seed up and pack it. A trick is to buy those party spinners that are reflective. Turkeys don’t like to see them they should stay away

    @@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors thanks. It's been a pain in the ass to get screening to grow this year. Not sure why. First it was a weed problem so I replanted and now nothing is germinating and I see turkey sign all over with scratches all across the areas I planted the sorghum/egyptian wheat. Lol

    Great advice except for phosphorus doesn't move much through the soil and potassium does it very slowly so you might as well skip the triple 19 on the second and third application and just use urea.

  • @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

    @Whitetailobsessionoutdoors

    That’s correct. But most people aren’t doing soil samples so adding it won’t hurt anything. Also triple 19 is Easier to find. The extra phosphorus won’t hurt a thing. To keep it simple for most people this is what I recommend.

    Chemicals aren’t needed 100 percent of the time they are way overused. No one knows except you. If it’s a brand new plot then yeah use chemicals for a burn down and then plant. If it’s a existing plot and your using cover crops and planting the right things then no most likely chemicals won’t be needed!

    @@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors there's a few weeds but there was hybrid sorghum and egyptian wheat there that laid on the ground until shortly before I planted that acted as mulch. A few things of native grass popping through but for the most part pretty weed free so I treated it with Roundup and simazine and there's a few weeds here and there but pretty sparse. Hopefully the egyptian wheat and sorghum is pretty aggressive against weed competition. Can you spray 24d over the sorghum and egyptian after it starts growing to control broadleafd or will it kill it?
