4:27 Personally, being Asian, I quite like leaving some of them to grow to marrow size. At the size shown, I peel them and use them in a stir fry - they are still quite tender and the seeds are soft and edible so there is no waste. The larger ones can be sliced lengthwise and stuffed with minced pork (once de-seeded) and baked - yum! Leave the skin on to hold it together during cooking. That means you can use courgettes at three stages of development for different dishes.

I have to debunk the idea that larger courgettes are somehow inferior to smaller ones, they're not. I've grown absolute whoppers, really heavy ones which are solid all the way through with loads of flavour, and no pesticides or artificial growth enhancers. It's been few years since I last grew them but will do so again next year, having been recovering from a major op. The variety I've grown are Defender which give a really good yield from not many plants, so much so I can't keep up with production. My favourite way to cook them is with garlic, seasoning and a good strong cheese & chilli. Yum

Fantastic video - I've just started gardening and also growing veg' and I bought two small courgette plants from the garden centre. I didn't even realise they grew horizontally! As they got bigger & bigger I discovered this video and now I know so much - thank you. Great advice on the size to harvest. My leaves wilt badly if I don't give then huge amounts of water in warm weather but I picked my first Courgette today - it feels like a great achievement! Fair to say I am hooked on gardening and will continue to try and learn from gurus like yourself. Thank you for taking the time.

Thank you Sarah, I’ve had patchy results in the past owing to the instructions on the seed packet “ sow on their sides”. I’ve therefore sowed them horizontally but sowing them vertically has given me better results.

Although I have been gardening for years, I only planted my first courgette this year. I was always put off by the size of the plant, but I have to admit I am pleasantly surprised....it is in my flower border producing a load of flowers and putting many flowering plants to shame. So I will definitely be repeating the experience next year.

In a sufficient amount of time you thoroughly walked us through the best varieties, how to sow seed, when to harvest and how to maintain healthy plants. Zucchini, as we call them here in the USA grow prolifically in our zone 5b and so it is helpful to know how to properly corral them for the best production. Plus the chive tea is so helpful as I have problems with powdery mildew. Thank you very much!

I think we've all grown too many courgettes at one time and ended up eating them in every conceivable way for breakfast lunch and tea. That was my abiding memory of my first year on the allotment I had. I took it over in winter and the only legacy was a huge rhubarb which I divided in to about 8 separate plants. I'm surprised I didn't die from a combination of Rhubarb and courgette overdose. That would be a gruesome way to go........!

Courgettes are called zucchini here in the United States and they grow 3-4 times bigger. They taste great if you sauté them in garlic, pepper salt and olive oil.

Hi Annette, courgettes tend to start off with more male flowers than female, but then get more female flowers (and therefore fruit) later on. Good luck 🙂.

Have just read that home grown courgettes can be poisonous!! Have I spent all the summer looking after my plants only to find there really poisonous, apparently if they are cross pollinated, are mine cross pollinated? I've grown veg during lock down basically for something to do so really dont know much about growing ! Apparently squash and cucumbers can also be poisonous!!

  • @jivinggerbil

Generally speaking only if the courgettes / squash taste bitter they could be poisonous and are best discarded. If they taste sweet or neutral they should be safe :)

If you can't get hold of manure use compost, if you can't get compost use fertilizers such as chicken pellets, bonemeal, growmore etc etc. Additionally most of the plants Sarah grows will be fine in West Ireland.
