How to Grow Centipede Grass! (Tips for those moving to S.C. from up north)

If you are moving to South Carolina from up north do not follow the same pattern of lawn care as you did up north. I learned the hard way...treating a southern lawn like Centipede as a northern lawn will kill it! This video has what I learned! Hope it helps those relocating to beautiful S.C.

Hey, that's great to hear. Just don't give it any more fertilizer during the summer or the fall because that one treatment of bonus s is good for the whole season. Also, don't forget to give your lawn granular insecticide treatment in July and early August since the bugs love to eat these lawns!! Thanks for watching. Thanks for leaving a comment and have a great summer. Cheers!

Hey thanks. Having lived down here steady for now 4 years, The one treatment that seems to help the best is insect control. It seems that the bugs love to eat these Southern grasses and unless I put insect control in the granular form down twice each summer, the bugs have a field day. Especially the mole crickets that can really kill these lawns. Thanks for watching and thanks for leaving a comment. Cheers!

Scott’s Bonus S is high in nitrogen….29! Centipede doesn’t like that much: but once a year seems to work. Love that it is zero phosphorus. Right amount potassium! You are spot on with having to change how you care for southern laws. I about all but killed my centipede and had to research as you did! Very eye opening! Thanks for the video!

Hey, thanks for watching! You are right about the nitrogen in Bonus S but I find if I use it only once a year (after cutting the lawn for the 3rd time in the spring) it does a great job. This year it took away all the dollar weed that had grown over the winter in my backyard!

Oh my god….please do not take this advice. Scott’s bonus S is the worst product for centipede. Waaaay too much N. Leave the applications to professionals in this area, who know the grasses and problems. Noticing your yard…you have entirely too much shade and centipede doesn’t like shade. Zoysia is a better option because it blends well with centipede.

@@p.b.sHUNTING I have found that if I use it once in the late spring it keeps the centipede looking good all season and more importantly it removes all the weeds that grew over the winter (especially dollar weed). Also, in the shady areas of the lawn I've tried both plugs of Zoysia and St. Augustine and have found the St Augustine spread faster and its color blended well with the Centipede. But you are right a professional can often do the better job! Thanks for watching and leaving input!

So what I've found is the st Augustine grass did very well in the shade and filled in well since last year. It also seems to spread and fill in much faster than the centipede. The st Augustine is a more aggressive grass from what I have seen but only over ran the centipede where it was thin. For me, the sy Augustine looks better than the centipede and did better after the winter . (came back quicker in the spring and is greener) . Glad you found the video helpful! replying 04/02/22 Great video I've had centipede for the last 7 years lot of learning curve. I'm in Georgia just south of Atlanta 2 years ago there was a fungus that was spreading that caused some lawns to brown not just mine to be affected. I grew up in Maryland with cool season tall fescue used to lawns being 4 in high .centipede however you want to cut to an inch and a half to 2 in. I spoon feed mine nitrogen in the form of malorganite several times a summer. Also watch videos on centipede from a man named Jason creel his channel is lawn Care life. Looks like atrazine (sp) is a good blanket weed kill /pre-emergent if done after greening up or while it's still dormant. Centipede and St Augustine are very similar and what is good for one will work for the other but check the labels always! Hand picking or spot spraying for weeds during the summer helps a lot. Hope this helps anyone with centipede grass

Thanks for leaving a comment! Good info that will help others, I'm sure! Centipede is a hard grass to keep looking good. Now what I did was mixed the front lawn with some St Augustine grass (using plugs) and that has helped fill in the spots under the tree where the Centipede did not grow. Keeping the grass watered in the winter when dormant, and killing the lawn pests has made a big improvement in our lawn. Thanks for watching!

some good tips but bad as well. Scotts is too high in nitrogen!. October is getting late for pre-emergent, do by end of September as far north as you are. You are really far north for St. Augustine, even on coast. I say use Zoysia instead. It also does not like shade and will likely be thin but it is tough and sturdy and will survive that colder weather. However, again you will need to treat as two different grasses as when having St. Augustine and Centipede. But you will overcome soil pH difference since Zoysia likes a wide range of pH. Centipede like acid and St. Augustine likes alkaline making them incompatible. I don't know how you can compare St. Augustine to Centipede. They look very different if each is healthy. Maybe not as far north but here, islands east of Savannah, I got rid of St. Augustine because mid-summer with rains it would grow 8 inches a week requiring mowing twice a week so not to remove more than a third of the blade. That was too much work for six weeks. In the end I got rid of centipede also and had nothing but Zoysia. Cut at 1 inch it was like walking on a thick dense carpet. Because it grew so slowly most of the year I could skip weekly cuts without major impact. But it did take me longer to cut. Sharp blades were imperative. And I had to mow slowly because it took a lot of power to cut through that density. And to ensure even cut regardless of the grain with respect to sun I always took half swathes. (Frequently I was asked what kind of grass I had.)

Hey, thanks for your tips! I'm definitely going to try your suggestion of applying the pre-emergent in September instead of October since I have noticed that we still get winter weeds with the October application. As far as the grass is, I have tried zoysia centipede and St. Augustine and since the video so far, the St. Augustine is doing the best even in the shade and even despite the fact that it does get cool up here along the South Carolina coast in the winter. But I agree with you about the zoysia. We had that in New Jersey in our backyard and it really did well with little maintenance. Appreciate your comments. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a good summer!!

If you are working with a Centipede lawn you should have applied Pre-emergent (lesco 0-0-7) in Feb. If you didn't, you can do it now. But don't do any fertilizer until May since you do not want to stimulate the grass to grow when it is still cool out (you can kill it!). Then I apply Bonus S in late June and Insect killer twice over the summer (that really helped my lawn last year!). Good luck and thanks for watching!

If not you could try replacing it with Zoysia (that can take some foot traffic), or wait and give it fertilizer in May and see if it greens up. If so, then give it an application of insect killer in July and August, followed by Iron. I had found my lawn was bad because of insects. Good Luck! Hope you have success! Thanks for watching!
