How to Grow & Care for Long Hair

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have been growing my hair out for 4 years now! These are the BEST tips I have for growing healthy, long hair:
0:06 Avoid the Following: Hair Dryers, Standard Hair Elastics (Use scrunchies or ties instead), Hair Straighteners, Hair Spray
1:52 Instead Use: Natural Oils, Silicone Serums and Leave-ins, Most Shampoos/Conditioners, Gentle Scrunchies and Headbands, Claw Clips or Banana Clips
2:00 Do Frequent Hot Oil Treatments for Moisture & Hair Health
Aim for 1x week
Find an oil product that has an oil as the first ingredient (It's easier to find this in the grocery store than the drugstore unfortunately)
Coat your hair, wait 1+ hours, then wash out with shampoo
Oils I showed: 100% Coconut Oil (food grade), 100% Pure Olive Oil (food grade), Sesa Hair Oil, Dabur Vatika Enriched Coconut Hair Oil
3:42 Detangle Without Breakage
When you find a knot, don't rip through it
Instead, gently pull the individual hairs up and out of the knot
4:45 Sleep in a Protective Style
This way your hair won't tangle or break as you sleep
Avoid styles that tug or put pressure on one part of your hair (topknots, buns, and ponytails)
I suggest using a loose braid
Leave questions below and tell me how long you have been on your long (or just healthy) hair journey!

    The struggle! It seems like hair NEVER grows when you are paying attention. I'm sure it will surprise you though - the minute you forget about it, it will reach your goal length!

    +ruby craig OMG I did the same thing. My hair was down to my butt. I am older and everyone is like: 'You should cut it off and get a 'cute' style.' So, I cut it off to my shoulders and immediately regretted it. I am currently growing it back out. I want to get it as long as possible and phooey on the rest of the world and their standard of hair length. I miss my hair!!!!! It is now about a little past my bra strap in the back... waiting, waiting...

    My hair was almost down to my hip bones, but then it stopped growing and instead the split ends were. I had to cut it so it ended above my boobs. But now I've been looking after my hair as I should've and after two months my hair has reached just under my boobs. I want my long curly/wavy hair back😭😭

    so it's waist length? when mine was waist length I used to wear it in a topknot, too, but now that it's twice that long I really feel the strain when it's up there. The topknot really is damaging when your hair gets longer, your hair just isn't long enough to show the strain yet. My hair is to my fingertips.

    Hello. As a former long hair person and, I know I am late to chime in. Your video is very good as for those things to avoid and those items to use. It's very good. I have just a few additional ideas for you, although, I realize you are well past this already. Sleep hair: consider using a satin pillow case. It's more gentle for your hair. Shampoo/Conditioner: When I grew out my hair, I only used a cheap conditioner; i.e. Suave. If the ingredients, as you mention, end with 'cone', avoid them! Finally, you do not need to use shampoo. It might take a week or two, but all you need is conditioner to clean your hair/scalp and your hair will love it. Like I said it might take a week or two for you to become accustomed to it, but trust me, you'll not only save tons of money, but your hair will be even more gorgeous. Combs: Make sure you use combs that have no seams in them. I noticed in the video the comb you use looks like it's been stamped out of a plastic press. This will produce a seam that will snap your hair and cause breakage. Invest in a Rachael Stevens comb or combs (I have several). You'll be amazed at how much easier it is to comb your hair and detangle. Finally, one last item, when I had long hair, I would about once a month do a vinegar rinse on my hair. This removed any build up of conditioner and left my hair feeling clean and silky. Just my two cents.

    I didnt use a hair dryer for a while and it was awful. I recommend using a hair dryer on the cold setting with a heat protectant. That has been my favorite method to prevent frizzy hair. Of course I moisturize after I blow dry so keep that in mind, because you dont want your hair too dry. Cheers

    Jessica Lee Haha alright. Yeah it will take a while but sometimes we have to suffer for beauty i guess lol. But you can probably blow dry with warm air if you only wash 1 time a week and dont use any other heat tools (flat iron, curling iron, etc). Cheers

  • @Heyysisah2

    @Heyysisah2

    E Winter I guess so haha! That's what I pretty much already do lol. I hate washing my hair so I do it as rarely as I can. I usually wash it 1-3 times a week. I don't need to wash it that often since my hair is really dry, and when I do it's a long process because I ALWAYS use hair masks and let it sink into my hair for 10-30 minutes and use tons of conditioner. I also use hair oil often. I just find it so strange that my hair looks damaged when I treat it so well, you know? Like way, wayy better than most of my friends.

  • @ewinter9021

    @ewinter9021

    I have dry hair as well but I have curly hair. I usually wash only once a week, maybe twice if it gets really dirty. Just remember less is more unless you have oily hair. If its super dry then a deep condition will be useful as well. But if your hair looks damaged then consider getting trims on your ends. Getting trims sucks but its better than letting split ends ruin your entire head. Definitely worth the temporary loss to have healthy strands. And if your hair is really damaged then get a real hair cut to get everything back to a healthy state. Just know length is worth nothing if its all damaged, because short healthy hair is much cuter :). Good luck Jessica Lee

    Aww bummer! Must it be straight? I personally would love to have natural curls. I guess the grass is always greener! And don't get discouraged - with regular oil treatments and a good heat protectant, you'll be there in no time. Sometimes the most difficult part is just the wait.

  • @imsosohappyomg

    @imsosohappyomg

    +Hamsterette Baker It does! The follicle is the group of cells which the hair grows out of whereas the cuticle is the outer layer of dead cells that protect the hair shaft.

    The earlier responder is correct. The cuticle is like the "skin" of the hair - it's the outermost layer! The cuticle is what gives our hair its shine and smoothness. :)

    Omg I been growing mine forl4 years too!! It's past my butt now!!! I love how everything you mention is literally exactly what I do (except for braiding your hair when sleeping.) I keep mine in a silky or satin night cap to protect my ends from rubbing. Another good tip is to start sleeping on satin sheets and sleep on a satin pillow cases. This prevents friction on hair. It's worth it :) three questions tho.. What kind of leave in conditioner do you use? And is the vatika hair oil really work.? What sulfate free shampoo do you recommend best bc so far I have been using the same sulfate free shampoo for the past two years now and it does wonders for my hair! I use shea moisture line.

  • @makeupandcoffee

    @makeupandcoffee

    8 жыл бұрын

    +jennifer valle Great advice about the satin/silky sheets. I should have asked santa for a set this year! ;) I generally don't use a leave in conditioner besides my few drops of oil. For my lightweight hair, I have found that leave ins can weigh it down and create buildup. If anything, I use a few drops of a Garnier silicone serum to prevent tangling - it's called Garnier Miracle Oil. The Vatika definitely works for me - I have tried regular coconut oil, almond oil, avocado oil, olive oil, and so on but Vatika gave me the best results. As for a sulfate free shampoo, I can't help you there. I actually like sulfates in my shampoo - especially since I use so many oils. I need a really soapy shampoo to clean my hair. So two out of three answers isn't bad I hope? Thanks for your great advice and questions! Also Shea Moisture is a great choice - I love how their ingredients are so natural!

    I still use a flat iron and curling iron, not everyday, just once every few months, I cut my hair and inch above my shoulders in July 2018, and now in January 2019 it is 2 inches below my collar bones, but I don’t know if that’s slow or fast, but it’s ok for me, and I’m trying to grow my hair to my knees and cut it 2 inches above my hip bones, and donate the cut hair to cancer research, this is such a helpful video, thanks Brit.

    wow! Length to aspire to! I have hair a couple inches past my collar bone....lol long way to go! Should probably include the curling iron in the naughty bin too, that is all I use. I use a bamboo comb on damp to dry hair and it is so lovely! Thank you for addressing how to detangle a knot! I use argan oil or coconut oil with lavender essential oil and it is heaven but I have to be so careful because I have fine hair. I have seen so many ladies here say to use a top knot for a "protective" style, thank you for correcting this issue! I have shorter hair but if I french braid from the top it will all fit in at night ;) Have a lovely day!

    +primrose Petal You will get there and I'm sure your hair is lovely right now! Curling iron definitely deserves to be binned . I didn't even think of it! Even when I was using heat tools, I never was skilled enough to use a curling iron. I ended up looking like Shirley Temple/a lion. Your comment was really a pleasure to read! Thank you for some great ideas - the bamboo comb and your oil mix especially. I have been meaning to place an essential oil order soon and lavender will definitely be on my list now. Take care!

    Oh I am glad you found it helpful! I really try to be when I comment ;) Curling irons can be a bit tricky that's for sure, but I have decided after seeing you video to put it away as of today! Yes do get some oils! My favorite for hair is lavender. Geranium is another good one and the two blended are lovely! Geranium can be a bit more costly though. Have a lovely day!
