HOW TO GROW AVOCADO FROM SEED | Easy step by step guide without using toothpicks or cones

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

One of the best and easiest houseplants to have is an avocado growing in hydro. Costing nothing more than a trip to the groceries, growing avocado from seed is a fun and simple way to add to your houseplant collection. It's also a great way to reuse glass and plastic bottles you already have at home. Once the roots are established, you could also transfer the avocado into soil if you'd like to see it gradually mature into an outdoor plant.

    Hi! Such beautiful plants and aesthetics. Quick question: once the rooting system gets very dense, how do you refill? Isn't there a danger that you cut off the rooting system if you lift! And how do you clean the bottle?! It seems impossible with such a small bottle opening. Any tips? Thanks and keep feeding us amazing images🥑🌺

  • @TheStyleGene

    @TheStyleGene

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind comment, Fanny. 💚 I do refill the bottles as the plant will drink it up. Once a week I carefully lift the seed ever so slightly to reveal a small opening at the rim of the bottle. I top the water up using my IKEA watering can which has a very thin and narrow spout. As for cleaning the bottle, I only pour out all the water and refill (again with the little opening between seed and bottle rim) so it’s not a thorough clean. But this is also because I chose to reuse drink bottles with smaller necks. You could always grow the avocado plant in a larger vessel which would make it heaps easier to completely clean the bottle and refill. Hope this helps. 😊

    Hey Jonathan, thanks so much for the kind words. 😊 I use Plant Runner's Indoor Plant Food for my indoor plants and the measurement is 1ml (the dropper has a measurement indicator) per 1 litre, but all the avocados in this video got to where they are without fertilising so I can't say for sure if they would have a more positive growth with plant food added. If adding to the avocado, I'd measure based on the size of the bottle and amount of water used. Link to the product here: theplantrunner.com/products/indoor-plant-food

    Hey Kitty. Thanks for reaching out. Don't be anxious as slow or stunted growth is normal with the avocado seed plant. After a while it might just maintain its size and number of leaves. Some seeds won't keep sprouting new leaves but it doesn't mean the plant isn't going to survive. 🌱

    Thanks for taking the time to watch, Jay! 😊 I find that timing for each seed to sprout can differ. I've had ones that already grew shoots while wrapped in the moist paper towel, some that had roots in water for a couple of weeks and up to a couple of months. I've also had instances where the seed rooted but just won't grow stems or leaves, so don't be disheartened if that happens. I'll give it another month to see if there are any signs of the seed cracking open a little wider but otherwise you can keep trying with a new avocado seed. Each one is unique in its own so just because one failed doesn't mean the next one succeed. 🌱 Keep on trying! 💚

    Thanks for watching. Oh, you didn't have to buy a bottle of gin for this 😊. Any bottle will do if it fits the avocado seed with space for the roots to grow. Commercially they would grow avocados differently. This process only applies to houseplant lovers for ornamental purposes. The plant will not produce fruit this way. Hope this helps.

    not when the plant is in water. If you transfer to soil, it should produce fruit but does take a while. 😊

    Besides avocado, what other plants do you plant it with a water bottle? Thanks

  • @TheStyleGene

    @TheStyleGene

    Not really water bottle specific but if you're thinking of plants that can thrive growing in water, there's also the sweet potato that can grow similarly to this avocado seed but in a bigger vessel/ vase. Then there are houseplants you can propagate and also grow in water such as the devil's ivy, philodendrons, monsteras, and more. Hope this helps. 🌱

    Before I didn't do any research on the subject. I just put it in a bag with a paper towel, I never took the skin off the seed. After it sprouted I just planted the whole seed in a pot with dirt. Do you think it matters?? Cause you say the seed splits and falls off later?? I mean its growing.. only has two leaves though after 2 months.. about 5 inches tall.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

  • @TheStyleGene

    I think that's fine if you're planting it in soil. 👍🏼 The root should take and grow like any other plant in a pot. It's only when we're doing it in water that the seed is important to balance and ensure the plant stays upright on a bottle. Removal of the skin also adds to the aesthetic if placing in water but isn't necessary in soil. I've heard that avocados take some time to grow in soil so you may want to look up other KZread videos to find out more. 😊

    Hi, that sounds like cloudy fungus growing on your roots. I would usually remove, give the bottle a thorough clean, and hold the roots under running water to gently remove the fungus before placing it back into a jar of water. Hope this helps.
