How To Grow A Plum Tree From Seed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

First video in a new series about growing plum trees - or at least my attempt at it! This one failed because I transplanted the germinated plum seeds before the roots were large enough to adapt from the ziploc bag into soil. I've learned my lesson and I've restarted the series in the next video.
Sorry for the delay and for no updates but we are now ready to get the second series of Growing Plum Trees from Seeds kicked off!
Thanks again for watching!

If people were wondering why the seeds look like almonds, it's because almonds and plums (and cherries, apricots and peaches) are all in the same genus Prunus. They're even closer to each other than humans are to chimps

I recently just cracked open 4 plums seeds... 1 broke to pieces after i used a pliers. What works for me was a sharp end tool that I could use to poke into the lips of the seed coat to split it instead of cracking the hull, somewhat like opening oysters. And of the remaining 3, 1 had already rotted. And after germinating, only 1 took root. So its a 25% success rate for me based on my experiment.

Nice video. I suggest though that you plant these in much deeper initial pots. Trees grow a tap root first and need considerable space under them to do that. Most trees from seed don't like transplanting and starting in that little cup is going to mean an extra transfer as they establish. Try large (1 or 2) gallon pots for trees. You'll have better success in keeping what you grow alive longer

Please don't expect to get what came from the store. Commercial trees are grafted on to hardy root stock. If you get a plum at all it will not taste like that perfect juicy gem you bought. But the trees should be pretty ornamental flowering trees.

Hey Rob, I hope you will keep us updated on your plum growing progress. I've got an old Mother Earth News magazine that tells me that all plum, peach, nectarine stones grow "true" to the type of tree that they come from. He says that the "stratification" process is pretty important though. I feel like if your seeds were refrigerated that long, we're golden. The article is "Grow Free Fruit Trees" by Lee Reich in M.E.N. June/July 2008 for reference. I love my M.E.N. magazine. Some issues are worthless but then some come in like this particular issue that full of great articles....BTW you're doing a fantastic job with your garden.

EllieMae: Thanks for your comments, the tips and the interest in this series. I haven't done an update on this one because the seed sprouts actually did not make it... Once they came up from the soil, they died within days... I plan on restarting the series - I actually have a handful of white peach seeds incubating NOW, however - I did not keep them refrigerated long - so I may need to start a third attempt here shortly. Again - thanks for your interest and the tips. I'm sorry that I do not have anything new on the series.

Stepha Holic I'm working on it since this batch didn't do well. It's best to stratify them for a few months in the fridge first, which I didn't. This is likely why they perished shortly after sprouting. I'm almost at the point where these were so if they make it, I'll do,a second video. It's best to do these in the late fall/early winter - or use the fridge to expedite the process. Thanks!

Peel the skin off the plums for greater germination rate. I've successfully germinated 3 seeds by soaking them for 24 hours to loosen the skin, then I peel it off mainly from the tips of the seed, then put them in a bag 4:34

I didn't break the seeds open or put them in the fridge. I just planted them, Took five months for them to germinate. Same for nectarines and mangos.

So I can do this without stratification? And could you describe the type of area you had the bag when you were germinating oh and thank you for the video I'm a first timer on peach and plumb growing I have had plenty of success with stratification with Apple and pear trees but plumbs cherry and peaches I'm hoping to improve my methods so if you could give me a little advice it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for watching Robert - great name too! 😉 Stratification will obviously increase the germination rate, for sure, so I'd stick with that. In my experiment, it worked without it. I placed the bag in a dark spot above the light fixture where they could draw the heat from the lamp - a heat mat would work too. I planted the germinated seeds into soil too early however, and they perished... In my next attempt, I plan to allow more time for a stronger root and better germination before moving them into soil. Also - I'll start with sterile soil next time as I believe I had a case of some fungus gnats which ate away the young roots. My apple seeds have done well, both the ones from series 1 and series 2 - so I'm super excited about those. I hope this helps and good luck!
