Back atcha Ripe Tomater! Wound up with 48 Better Boys for the most part this year. Grew 36 from seed and then bought a dozen more. I had planned on going from my usual 24 down to 12 but then Biden happened so my dreams of cutting my garden in half sorta fell by the wayside. I'm bringing the drat things down to the house in 5 gallon buckets two at the time every other day. Good gosh! BUT...why I wrote. So you inspired me to do the lemon seed trick if you recall. I planted a dozen in those larger seed tray thingies and waited and waited and, well I gave up. Just set 'em aside for a failure. Then one day I saw a teeny little sprout in a cell so I started watering again. Turned out (in their own good time) that 9 out of 12 cells have baby lemon trees. I doubt that I'll see a lemon in my lifetime but the project has been fun so far. I'll baby 'em and keep them fed and watered, diapers changed, repotted and so forth to see what comes with my little Bonsai lemon trees. Just wanted to update and thank you again! Ya done good!!! Hello Ripe Tomato! (Just planted 36 Better Boys today. Whew!) My mother had an orange tree she started from a seed. It made miniature fruit which tasted like lemons here in zone 7. Overwintered in the house. She finally donated that thing to a new middle school here in town to go in their modern atrium whatever in the middle of the main floor under the sun roof. I had never considered having a lemon tree for myself until about 30 minutes ago. I think it might come in handy in times to come. Went looking and there you were! So thank you very much for your GREAT video. Got it stashed in two different places for further reference. Gonna grab a bag of organic lemons tomorrow!

How did I miss this video???? It really helps when the seeds are large and plump! My second try lemon had excellent, plump seeds. All the seeds sprouted and all 10 are still thriving. I am just curious how fast they should grow. The seeds were planted in November. It took almost a month before there was a good germination that I was comfortable in transplanting them to soil. I used 4" pots. The plants are now 6" tall. The leaves were large but now the new ones are small. I started to feed them using a low NPK mix in water and water them from the bottom. I don't want to transplant them again until we have warmer weather. I will definitely use a larger pot! My question is why the leaves are so small? Thanks, Jeff!

Thank you for your demonstration. I had tried to keep seeds in a damp towel for few days before planting but had no success with germination. Then, I thought, perhaps my store-bought lemons were irradiated, hence no germination. You have given me new hope. I will try your way, with an organic variety of lemons. I had no clue the seeds weren’t suppose to dry out! I kept mine over winter and then planted and I guess I got lucky. Not sure if I have a lemon or a lime yet though lol.

İ went to the nursery to buy a Lemon tree to find it was £40 and was a very small tree, so i planted some from my 🍋 and have two small plants, iv also started to plant seeds from all my fruit and veg . Excited to see some fruition

Hello :) I think this is your only lemon tree video, so I hope you don't mind my question on this video. I am doing some research on my 3 year old Lemon Tree (Improved Meyer Lemon) I am in zone 7b (North Texas, USA) It flowered a few weeks ago and all of the sudden, the leaves went yellow on me and started wilting. I used my soil tester kit, and as expected, the feed I used is not being absorbed in the soil...everything was depleted. I came to YT, as I often do, to find some information for my specific zone...I found several and one channel in particular said to use a mulch for the top of the pot, he called the top 6" roots "feeder roots" and said they are to never be covered with soil, only mulch. I am going to amend my soil in my pot and get my levels and acidity to their proper place...my question, that I can't find the answer to is, can I use chipped cedar as a mulch? I have tons of it bc we have rabbits, and was hoping to save a little money in using it, but didn't want to assume I could and harm my tree. I also have straw. I will obviously go buy something if I need to, but was hoping you might have some advice/input on what is best for my tree. I appreciate any information you would be willing to share! Hi K, don't use cedar as a mulch. It's great for keeping down weeds because it suppresses growth. If you have a plant you're nursing back to health, I'd avoid it.

I've done this with lemon, grapefruit, mandarines, and limes with success. They're very pretty little plants. Mine are likely to remain small- maybe I'll take up bonsai- since I live in an apartment with limited space, and I'm growing them inside. I've got them in much smaller pots than your gallon pots, so I don't expect them to hit the the ceiling. My oldest, and largest are about two years old. If I had a house with a yard, it would be great fun to put some in the ground.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Yes, I had pretty good germination rates. I removed the outer seed coat when I first started growing them, but no longer do. You don't really need to. They may take longer to germinate, but there's less chance of damaging the seed. Plus it's a little too fiddly for me. I soak the seeds for three days in water before putting them into a ziplock bag with a damp paper towel for germination. I learned this on KZread, but not sure who to attribute it to. I watched several videos about it. Not sure how I can share pictures with you, I could e-mail some, but don't know if that's possible through KZread. I'm sure if I put the trees into bigger pots, they'd probably be quite a bit bigger by now. I like growing trees from seed. It's been fun watching the different species grow, and develop. I've also gotten much better at labeling them, so I now put the date, the type of seed, and variety if known. Since I wasn't so good in the beginning, I'm not quite sure how old a few of my trees are, and also, my biggest mandarin tree, I'm not sure if it's a Satuma mandarin (which is suppose to be fairly true to type), or if it's a California mandarin (cutie, which apparently isn't true to type).

Thanks Robin! Mine just naturally fruited for me, probably due to the decrease in humidity, photoperiod and temperature over winter....then come spring, the 2 adult plants I had in my grow area just sprouted flowers everywhere. Hopefully these new ones will do the same in a couple years!

Would something like Meyer lemons work better for colder climates? I heard they were more cold hardy, but that they tend to be grown in subtropical regions anyway.

So once you have it nicely planted, what do you do from there? What about keeping indoors in the winter? Is it better to greenhouse outside? What fertilizer? Full sun or shady? Morning sun or afternoon sun? I have lost two lime trees(supposed to be lemon!) after a couple of years.

Just keep it growing. Lennon trees are tropical, like all citrus plants, so it'll have to come indoors. I don't fertilize my plants, I tend to augment my soil first instead. More sun the better with these guys.

I hade my own lemon bush and it whas great. I made a lot of lemonade So I wane try to grow it again. But I don’t know if I wane buy a plant or grow it Great video 👍 And also wye do you need to water you’re trayes from under and wait hours and not water it from the top?????

Question I saved a few fruits from a lemon tree with thorns (maybe Korean?) one is ripe and 3 are not. Do the unripe fruits work too for growing a tree? I read they might not have seed coats yet and could even germinate faster? One is yellow three green and smaller. The tree is beautiful has long thorns. The fruits are small, round, fuzzy. I live in zone 7

Hey barbara, yes, this should work for all citrus seeds!

Are you using heat mats? Where are you putting the planted seeds and where are you putting them when germinating

Do you cointinuously water the soil to keep it moist throughout the two weeks or do you let it dry in between waterings? Am not using a self watering container that is why i am asking

Do you have to start them in small pot or can you just put them in a larger one to germinate?

Really depends on your climate. They won't tolerate frost...like at all!

What a great video!! Maybe you can give me some advice on orange trees. I bought 2 young orange trees from the nursery several years ago...and both of them are covered in large thorns...I have not had a single orange flower or fruit from either tree. Should I just remove them and buy new trees?

Hey Daniel, I just use a smartphone. Two in fact. Two Samsung Galaxy S10's, set to 4K 30fps. Because 95% of my shots are outdoors in the day, lighting isn't an issue, neither is fast motion. So the sensor and processor in the phones can do the same job as a $1000 DSLR camera. External microphone is a MUST though....no question. For editing, I use Adobe Premiere and Adobe Photoshop. I know the programs well, so its what I use. For free, I'd use DaVinci Resolve. Cheers!

Lemon tree produce lemons in 2 to 3 years with the right care. Planting limes is also the same. They take 3 years as well, but limes here in the netherlands do not have any seeds. So I took them from a fruit in another country. The seed germinated pretty fast when still moist in a bag while I took it. I put it in soil when I arrived, and it is now 20 centimeters tall. Maybe you can buy seeds if you can't get one as well.

Hey Jennifer, after they sprout, the plants will need the most light you can give them at every stage.

I like the way you garden and plant, its almost exactly the way i do it myself. I absolutely LOVE lemons and how good they are for us. I now eat lemons whole about once a week paying close attention to make sure they don't hurt my teeth of course. I have been wanting to have my own lemon tree for a few years and not sure why I haven't already planted me one since i am a dedicated gardener. Maybe because I live in Alabama and just worried they wont grow well for me here so I didn't waste too much time trying. Any advise of growing a few in a southern state would be greatly appreciated. Hey thanks for that! I think if you sab keep the tree small and bushy and mobile, you'll be able to bring it inside or shelter it when really bad weather hits, but the rest of the time it'll be fine outside...

I like to watch your videos. Im not a gardener and want to start growing a lemon tree. Want to know must i put the potatoe in the ground when the tree is said for instance 40cm high. Second point is what kind of soil you plant your lemon tree in. 3 rd point i saw white things on top of the soil in the pot. I suggest it is a hormone that you spread on the top what kind of hormones. I will ask further questions as my lemon tree grow bigger.

Yup, works with most citrus seeds in fact! Just put the plants in your window sill when they pop up. Great place for them to get natural sunlight.

My lemon seed sprouted into a very, very long limp leafy thing (kinda like 3 blades of grass). I have to prop it up for support. It doesn't look like other people's sprouts. Can you tell me why????

Usually light (too little) and heat (too much) play the biggest role in how the plants grow early on like that. But also make sure it wasn't a weed that simply sprouted instead as well

Hey Janet, welcome! Never too late to try. I've started seeds in December or January! Just remember, it is a semi tropical tree, so it'll have to come inside over winter.

Long process but in 2025 you may be the only person in the vicinity with a lemon

Mike R. It takes 3-5 years to give fruit not sure about height.

2-5 years. My last ones took 30 months until flowering and then another 3 months until the Lemons were ripe for picking.

Nothing. I don't really fertilize. I'll enrich my potting mix with compost and other slow-release amendments, but that's it.

Will these seeds produce a plant that will give me fruit? Or do they need to be grafted?

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms - True. I'm in zone 9B, Northern CA, my citrus (lemon, lime, konquat) seem to repeat the fruiting cycle continuously year round. The aroma of the blossoms are heavenly.

You discuss light and fertilizer, but I'm unclear about watering. Do the plants need to dry out or stay damp?

I always decline a watering schedule Debby because everyone's conditions and soil are different. Lemon trees are tropical, but they don't like to stand in water. Err on the side of drier, but don't dessicate them, LOL

Because not all seeds germinate. I don't have infinite space to "try out" gallon pots around, especially in my indoor setup where square inch-age is a premium. I can sow a 98-cell tray with Lemon seeds in the same space that fits 4 one gallon pots. If space is $$ and I wanted to sell a few hundred Lemon trees this spring, potting in gallon pots and hoping for the best isn't an option. :-)

The Ripe Tomato Farms I’m not really sad since I get seeds so it’s not all bad, also the onions I got were from a store so they probably were harvested like the 1st year and 6 months after sowing and it took 6 months to seed so it was probably meant to. I’ve also found i can sprout tomato seeds in a paper towel without a plastic bag as well, I don’t like direct seeding it into soil since last time I did it I checked the next few days after and no seeds were there, so I will leave them in it for the next few days. The seeds I sowed were from baby plum tomatoes in the store, and I’ve found it takes 3 days to get a root about 1 inch long. I don’t know why but even in the UK they thrive with pretty unpredictable weather conditions e.g. 1 minute it’s raining another it’s hailing then it’s snowing 😂. Another example is on my sister’s birthday it’s snowing and -10°c/14°f whereas on my birthday its 38°c/100.4°f and it’s like a frying pan.

I have found that it really does not matter... Light or dark.

Dont you need to let the seeds dry before planting them? That way they "know" to start growing the next time they're wet?

No. I talk about the protective coating that prevents the seeds from germinating inside the lemon at 2:30 in the video. Once the environment changes, they know to sprout....regardless if its wet to wet or wet to dry to wet.

I have a gin and lemonade drink after dinner and found my self with lots of seeds so having a green thumb decided to try growing them.I'm at 697 baby lemon trees and more coming up everyday.ive tried every way I could find and am lemon crazy. My only concern is something is eating the new buds.I need to get a handle on it. I've tried everything. Help

My older trees was quite high...they all flowered and fruited. That was about 7 years ago. I just recently got back into Lemons, so I can't wait to harvest!

Could you show us one you've grown so we can see a bigger tree?! How many lemons have you harvested from yours? Ohhh where's your onion? It's been over four months, there has to be something happening after all this time!

Yup, I'll show you these ones when they grow up. I don't have my Lemon trees anymore from a couple years ago and decided to try some more. Thought it would be a cool video to release now, rather than in 2 years when they are bigger. Not much different on the onion front. I divided a couple and they took, but stalled. That's the focus of the next video was the division, but I want to show the increase in growth. I have them right in the ground in a snap pea bed, so I may dig them up and put them in pots. I have about 60 slices growing currently in various stages. Going to try them over winter as well with the indoor grow space I'll now have available! :-)

I loved your videos up until this one. I gave it a conditional thumbs up. Beer is for BEER, lemons are for lemonade,.

Yup, that's why I don't do it. In the video, I explain that. I go straight to soil.

Why did you put newspaper at the bottom of pot ?

All pots have holes in the bottom...the newsprint acts like a coffee filter, letting the excess water out, but not the soil.
