How To Grade Wheat Pennies - Do You Know How?
Grading 1909 To 1958 Pennies - I Understand The Struggle. It's not easy grading pennies or cents, they're small and most are darker in patina, referred to as "brown". Copper is a highly reactive metal as well as the alloy bronze, which is mostly copper, so pennies can quickly corrode, have environmental damage, artificial toning and be cleaned and retoned or just plain ugly.
Then you have to worry about counterfeit key dates and common dates, I have two videos on this YOU need to watch.

Very important video for someone like myself that is trying to get as much knowledge as possible about the various parameters that affect coin valuation. I started saving every coin I found in my pocket change dated 1970 and earlier about 12 years ago. As a result I have amassed quite a tidy sum of all different dates and denominations. I have found some that are in remarkable condition and can not believe they were in circulation for their entire existence. I am most concerned about the cleaning aspect as I have been careful not to use any chemicals polishes or pads etc. I have on some of them used a soft cloth and a little warm water and a tiny bit of dish soap to remove surface oils and dirt then a gentle rinse with a cloth and water then pad dry. A few of these the original patina came out with a beautiful finish and tones but I’m concerned that I may have crossed the line with what is acceptable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏 Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge and insight. 👍
As a hobby numismatist I only grade my coins to the letter. I do not grade to the number. BUT, I also do not have any higher value coins (my best is a 1945 micro S dime in AU). That is what the grading companies job is, to grade it to the number. Great information Daneil. Thanks.
Outstanding explanation & examples. Thanks Daniel !! Self grading coins takes lots of practice & patience for sure, but absolutely necessary prior to sending into a third party grading company.

Hey Malone I have a black penny and it's silver underneath. Doesn't look like it was altered. Looks like punched on wrong planchet

Learning from each video..especially cent grading
For myself photo grading normally gets you ballpark close in grading, minus any cleaning or improper handling. Just my 2 cents
Absolutely beautiful video Daniel! I truly appreciate the effort you made to produce different grades and conditions to ascertain what grade your wheat cent is. I bought a 1909S VDB in VF 20 in a green holder. I had an ANA book on grading and one of the characteristics of a VF 20 is the evidence of cheek separation on the cheekbone. I mean it didn't look like there was full separation, there was barely enough to make the technical grade. I learned a lot from that book and wanted to ask you sir how much weight you place on that book. ANA grading standards.
Great instruction on grading.
Another great video, Daniel. Very interesting and informative about how coins received their grades and how each grade has a subtle difference between grades. Thanks for showing us the difference.
Lighting is a HUGE factor in accurate grading.
Your content is so invaluable!!! Thank you!!😁

Nice comparison. It would be really nice to have a video just showing the grades, one picture/grade per second.

Thanks for all the info , I do believe you help the coin collectors?
When grading the higher end coins, I reckon much of it comes down to overall eye appeal. It's so so subjective and it's why aesthetics of the specimen overall play a big part on those "slider" type coins. So many times I got Morgans returned at a AU58 and its just like getting kicked in the groin lol. Sorta.. I just won't send a coin in unless it's in MS condition, barring it being a coin of true significance like The 09 vdb S, 69 S DDO etc. Great video, grading coins is not easy esp in the MS tier. I know the grading companies just do not have the time, resources to triangulate in their grading process .. meaning that 3 people grade the coin, each not knowing others opinion. Take the three grades and a consensus could be determined rather a single perspective, would be one way for a better, more objective and fair result🤷🙏🕉️
Excellent lesson here! I find the drawings in Brown and Dunn along with those found in the old ANA books to be easier than the photo grades for me. Thank you for the content!
Thanks, great video.
Good Man, thank you very much !!

I have a 1909-s VDB with some slight corrosion around the edges. Should I clean it or leave the corrosion on? Either way, will it corrode even more if I leave it that way. I really need to know.
This was the best video you ever done what about 1958 silver Penny do a video only 3 know of I got the 4 one Thanks
Sir my coin 7705 how to find a value at how much price
When you are referring to the cleaned coins were they polished or just had the dirt removed?
@CoinHELPu

I wasn't referring to just debris being removed but those are not the only two ways a coin can be cleaned.
No mention of the bow tie. At higher grades the bow tie and lapel can indicate the degree of die wear. A perfect three-dimensional bow tie is something to look for.
@CoinHELPu

No grading guide mentions a bow tie. Where did you get that? A coins grade is determined by a pattern of wear and in MS by the amount of contact marks. Not how well it is struck. Even FS nickels can be low or high grade as can non FS nickels.

@@CoinHELPu just a personal preference....I always look at the bow tie....if it's there the way I describe, 3D, I will pay more...on any date strength and definition of the lapel lines, same way...I assume early die states do better in preserving these details on some higher-grade cents.
Hi sir how about 1958 penny i have one in good condition really I like know the value of it thank you sir🙏👍👌
Even GOLD if you keeping it in different environment change the color!!!that why they sent to a specialist to clean 🧼 the GOLD !!!! With out damaging it !!!!!
The difference between getting a 66 or a 67 is who you know? I'm sure certain big customers will get that extra 1 when most wouldn't.

No, it doesn't happen that way, human grading is just an opinion based on experience with other coins of similar grades. Just happens they will eventually grade a coin registry grade when they think it appears to be that grade and not because of who sent it.

@@CoinHELPu that's good to know. I've always wondered about that.

I do think they kinda protect their registry set grades, seems one almost always gets one point lower.
