    If someone is on your command line, you have way bigger problems to worry about than your Wi-Fi password. They're already on your system and your network.

  • @LimitedWard

    @LimitedWard

    9 ай бұрын

    That's exactly what I was thinking. If they already have direct access to your system, what's the point? Though this does demonstrate how a hacker could use your machine to hop over to another one with higher privileges on the same network. So from an individual perspective, this isn't all that useful, but if you're trying to hack a corporation it would be much more powerful.

    The paswords are just the saved ones that YOU had to type in on YOUR machine to connect to whatever wifi access points that required a pssword. its literally where your computer looks when it needs to connect to an already established access point. And for those of you saying "ohhh once someone has your wifi password youre compromised. Like no, just change it, just change the whole network name whike youre at it. If youre really at the point that someone has backdoored your machine and os offloading info to their own server, then you have much bigger issues.

    this is a "problem" on many linux machines, too, and probably mac also. somewhere, there's just an unencrypted config file with an entry for the wifi network, and one of the lines is just the plain text password. once someone has access to your unencrypted, physical computer, it's kinda game over anyway, though

    I used these in high school on one of the library laptops. They had open wifi, which was garbage because everyone was on it, and a restricted official-use-only wifi, which ran much faster. Got the password from this trick, gave it to a few close friends. Never got caught.

    You can also look at the adapter properties in control panel to do the same thing. If you connect to numerous networks either method can be helpful but the odds of someone using this in a malicious capacity is slim to none.
