I was a practitioner of Goju for a while, and I know how these power katas strain every muscle in your body. The dynamic tension being used to work one muscle group against another hardens you whole body to protect you from a strike. A kata’s sole purpose is to develop muscle memory, so that the fighter reacts instinctively from the hundreds, even thousands of times that they have performed katas, to Instantaneous action or reaction, and to do so without having to process the thought. A fighter that is well developed in kata, has an advantage over one that that concentrates more on kumite. Kata and kumite has to be practiced proportionally to be a well rounded martial artist.

Though I agree that kata certainly has its uses, there's a reason why kata champs are rarely kumite champs and vice versa.

@@tacticaltemplar875 While this may be true in the ring; on the street however, the artist with a high proficiency in kata will usually prevail, simply BECAUSE of the axiomatic, even immutable characteristics of the muscle memory ingrained into the body and mind of the fighter. THIS is a known fact.

@@allanpolk2681 I'm not so sure this is even a fact- let alone a known one. Most karate practioners don't even practice the more practical interpretations of the kata. The vast majority of bunkai they perform are highly impractical unnatural movements in response to an oi zuki- a punch they'd never encounter in fhe street. Kata is great and has its uses (I practice plenty of them) but without regular practice of actually practical bunkai in a live fashion with a partner, kata is little more than light cardio.
How come they are black belt and didn't know sanchin kata

@@tomasgrigolatto8903 From the logo of the badge, seemed they were coming from the same type of karate. Even they were not coming from the same dojo, at least they should know how to turnaround. The guy put his rught leg to back tried to turn left which made me laugh. How could that be?

But he based that on what he was shown by practitioner of sport karate. The strength conditioning is different between sport and authentic Goju Ryu. Sport Karate techniques tend to be disjointed, and Kata techniques wn't work properly(if at all) when point sparring. Also, he really only took a cursory glance.
