00:00:00 In this section, the speaker discusses the importance of college admissions and how GPA is considered as the top factor. They suggest an plan for improving chances in college admissions by analyzing one's current position, focusing on time, intensity, and consistency. The speaker emphasizes the need to sacrifice short-term goals for long-term success. 00:05:00 In this section, the speaker emphasizes the importance of space repetition for better long-term retention of new knowledge. They explain how the forgetting curve is steeper when new information is not reviewed or actively retrieved, but can be flattened with increasing spaced intervals of review. The best time to revisit information, they suggest, is right around the time of natural forgetting. Space repetition is a technique for smarter studying, not necessarily longer, and they encourage the listener to give it a try.

You're ahead of the curve and won't have to deal with a lot of mundane and boring classes just for the requirements in college, so know that your efforts aren't in vain. Keep it up for just a little longer. It's the final stretch of this marathon of a high school career, so put in effort NOW so you won't regret later. Thanks for watching :)

I am going from a Highschool sophomore to starting Collegiate Highschool in my junior year. I am “naturally smart” and can only apply maybe a few sentences to what I’m currently doing now. I do truly want to get better and improve my academic life, and this video was really an eye opener. I never studied a blink in my whole life (I know, it’s bad) but that’s because I didn’t know how to. I didn’t know anything. Consistency, intensity and dedicating time to study will be a game changer. Also developing the discipline to keep going when motivation runs out is a very valuable thing to keep note of. What you said about smart men with no discipline really stuck with me because I don’t want to go down that path. I’m going to try to fix and improve what I do currently to prepare for Collegiate hs and the rest of my academic career. Thank you for the education and have a great day. TDLR; I never studied before but I want to start studying for English class, as I am bad with novels and whatnot. I am going to collegiate Highschool next year and need some tips and advice. Thank you for making this video.

Lee has some great advice, and the amount of incite they are able to give goes to show that they did their research. Taking a rain check for where you're at is key to finding what you improve first. Consistency is very important to improving at anything. Picking out the low hanging fruit is an amazing tip to help relieve stress and build motivation. There is great advice here and I'm open to discussing this more; these are just my incites. However that is where I start to build my rebuttal. The most difficult thing to do is build up enough motivation to stay consistent, put in a lot of time, and work hard. Motivation has so many variables that the only consistent thing about it inconsistency. What will happen on the days you don't feel 100%? Increasing intensity and repetitions is another weak point. Doing so will carry you through High-School, but the ceiling for improving is very low. If this works for you, by all means go ahead, but say someone were to pick a study technique that is very inefficient and crank their intensity to max how far would they get? Yet you get advice everywhere saying to read 10x, write 10x, space and repeat till the finals. Would you need to do it 10 times if it worked the first time? Sacrificing the things that help you wind down and recover will only lead to burn out faster. The whole point of improving your learning skills is to reduce the time you spend studying. Setting aside the time to do the things you enjoy first, then orienting your schedule to accommodate that will give you reason to stay consistent. Spaced repetition is a great place to start, but what do you repeat? How do you know the best time to space? This technique doesn't scale well when you have a high volume to cover and you're trying to keep track of how long to space everything. It becomes a guessing game and if you lose you have to re-learn a bunch of material. On top of that, if you forget everything quickly using a low level technique the workload only increases exponentially the more you learn. With that out the way I'd like to shine a light on what applies more broadly to anyone who wants to improve their grades.

First of all I want to thank you for giving this much thought to what I said, really appreciate it. The dynamic between working hard and actively recovering in order to avoid burnout is essential, however I didn't want to drag this video out 20-30 minutes to talk all about the nuances of effective studying for every single scenario. Your point stands as there are many arguments you could make just like any opinion that is stated, including mine, but for the sake of trying to help out the widest range of people as possible, I purposely didn't dive into the nuances of such a complex topic, I hope you understand! Millions of people deal with not being consistent enough, not studying hard enough, not putting enough time in, and I just wanted to his those pain points head on with this video. Looking for more critical comments from you such as this in future videos, it'll help me a lot in growing as a person and as a creator. It's truly appreciated.

For some background, I ate up this advise my junior and senior years of Highschool. I didn't care so much about GPA, I was more worried about graduating at all. After cramming for the SAT and getting a mediocre score I was accepted into Universities in my area (USA). Study hacks, tips, advice, yadda yadda, it helps to gather more domain knowledge, but they have their short comings. The one thing research on study skills shows consistently is that techniques vary in effectiveness based on application and subject, yet many outside variables skew results so conclusions are had to make. Aside from that I did set up a game plan, increased my intensity, and did my best to be consistent. I got a 4.0 my first semester in college, so yippie. The next semester I struggled to even get out of bed, let alone do anything regarding the advice in this video. Anyone who can relate to that might ask, " so where do I start?". Step one is to take a step back, like the video states, gauge where you are. If you were already cramming in reps and put in tons of time studying you probably wouldn't be here looking for advice. "You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems", James Clear. No matter what your goal is, if it takes longer than a few months to obtain then you might as well form a system to sustain you. For most that looks like setting the bar low and starting with the basics. Shaping Focus, managing time and tasks, and showing up just to hit the bar. These aren't the end all be all. Every system has many parts, and learning skills are just part of it. If you often default to procrastination or just can't get started, what does your technique matter? I haven't given any actual strategies or techniques yet. The reason why is that the first step to improving is to make a shift in your mindset. There is a lot of theoretical stuff that will make your learning journey a lot easier. For starters, learning is a skill. Be prepared to be wrong, learn some new techniques, try and fail, and keep the ball rolling. Making mistakes is okay, look for ways to improve. Look around for techniques to try, then reflect on its effectiveness. Do you remember a lot? How long did the material stick? Was it due to your execution? Taking the time to evaluate your techniques is just as important as reflecting on your progress. Getting started and trying things out is hard, so begin with trying to do the basics consistently. From there look at your execution, can you improve you're efficiency anywhere? If you're truly getting the most out of every hour of study you would be prepared for whatever an exam can throw at you. Don't assume you are until you can prove it. Ask, "what would need to be true to validate my claim?", if you can't, simply reflect on what your current process is. Good quality advice is everywhere, but no amount of that will teach you how to learn if you don't try and practice. Even with practice, you can practice something wrong; which is why I place emphasis on reflection. Most importantly make it easy on yourself. With learning you are in the long run, take your time, build it up slowly. Most people don't know how to properly gauge where they are, and more often then not end up trying to go full throttle when they can't manage much. Kinda like endurance. You might be able to work hard today, but just as likely to get nothing done tomorrow. Focus on building habits slowly, and they will form your key stones in your system. Solidify each piece one by one before expecting to set the bar higher. I'm running out of brain cells so I'm calling it here before I can't even prove my own competency. I hope I got my point across. In all reality we're all in the same boat trying to learn and survive the gauntlet of school. Lee has the right direction, so try something. Be careful with all advice you take in, measure it yourself. Good luck out there!

A habit of progress is the only form of progress. Less is more, just start and don't worry about how much you need to accomplish, you can increase the reps when it's easy to start. The real secret sauce is motivation, or rather that it doesn't exist until it's already too late. You don't need to become a bitter, lonely, useless person, I know you've dealt with people like that. You can learn to make people happy by providing value to their lives, and that happiness will be reciprocated(sometimes you'll have to self advocate, and negotiate in transactional relationships, you'll know). He's right about the partying too, you can experience that once everything else is sorted out, and it will be easy to juggle it all once you're ready.

It's the willingness to pay the price that makes you unique. And you're on that path to pay the price for that right now. I'm all too familiar with students feeling down with their current standing, but I think if you check out what I say in my community posts it could help you clear your mind. "The only measuring stick I use is my past. How much have I learned at this point from a year ago, a month ago, a week ago, etc. Comparison is the thief of joy, but when you compare against your past selves, you reclaim the joy through progress." Let's be realistic, having an incredible GPA is more like a prerequisite to be considered for an Ivy league. So your chances are incredibly low. But you also have to realize that this isn't the end all be all in life. This is just the start and at least you've realized what you need to change. Good luck and I'll be rooting for you.

Just like the video says: 1. Analyze where you're at currently. Are you studying all day and still can't get those grades you want or are you wasting your time? 2. If you're wasting time all day, give up the things that you want to do in the short term (video games, social media, etc), for what you want most in the long term (good GPA). 3. Follow the spaced repetition technique for a technical test such as a math or science class. Execute this studying technique PROPERLY and see your results. 4. Be. Consistent. Easy to say, hard to do. So go do the hard work.

That really depends on your specific situation. Are you simply not getting enough sleep? Is the quality of your sleep bad? When does school end for you? Personally I took sleeping as one of my top priorities since it improved literally every aspect of my life. Quality study times, better mood, and overall I felt more energized throughout the day. I'm no expert but from my personal experience, in the rare case that I do take naps, I try not to take longer than 30 minutes. I don't advocate for being productive and working 24/7 since it's such an unsustainable way of living. But I do recommend doing this for those who want to make a last-ditch effort in giving it their all, especially if they feel like they're behind. Wishing you luck.

When you go from lazing around and cramming, to planning your day, studying and managing demanding subjects like maths science and physics (at least in my case😭😭) everyday, having a schedule, striving to get and A in all classes, going to extra class and so on (plus intensity and focus! more energy, more passion😭😭); How do you stop it from burning you out? Bcs its like the first few days are okay, and the rest of the days you have this incessant migrane from stress. is that just me?

It definitely isn't just you, and it simply isn't unsustainable for you to be working/studying all day. This is why actively recovering is so important. Most students think binging TV or scrolling through Instagram is "rest" however it isn't. I would advise you to look up some videos on how to actively recover from long study sessions! (Sleep is the most important btw) Good luck!

Switch to better thumbnail . Also, most people applying to colleges either don't know what Valedictorian or they find this word dull . Try keeping simple words . You don't want them to think hard about what Valedictorian is . Also better thumb nail and title . try keeping 5 or 7 as number . 5 being most common and frequently being thought with or being used . 7 being most unique and interesting number . 6 isn't a number to be used psychologically .

People are not as ignorant as you think. Why would you openly critique someone's altruistic efforts when they put together a video for viewers. Why would you show contempt towards your fellow humans?

Thank you so much for your feedback! And yes, I should definitely improve my thumbnail game, it's lacking severely (as you can see). Those are some interesting insights to the numbers that you suggest, I'll try and incorporate them in the upcoming videos 👍
