How to Get Your Ham/ Amateur Radio License [2023]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I give an overview on how to get your Ham/ Amateur radio license so you can get a ham radio call sign. They've made a few changes since I got my license in 2009, but still not to bad.

So the Private Pilot exam is easier than the Remote Pilot / FAA 107? WOW! It was 5-6 questions on my Remote Pilot exam that wasn't in any of the numerous study guides I paid for! Even looking up the codes for those questions are no where to be found online! I easily passed but those questions I hadn't seen almost freaked me out!

I got my Novice and General tickets more than 50 years ago, before I was even a teenager. Ham radio was seminal in my studying Engineering. Let my license lapse when I went into the Navy and was stationed overseas. Renewed my license with a new call sign, and was active again in a new state for a number of years, and once again, my license expired. Getting close to my retirement, I’m been thinking about overhauling my Drake C-line and getting my license once more. I also have a Grundig general coverage receiver, but I have to say, I’m more than a little disturbed, and put off, by the level of politics and vitriol on the bands I hear on my Grundig. It’s so prevalent that it’s resulted in me pushing the pause button on my efforts to get re-licensed. In the 70’s, Hams were gentlemen and women. My parents even trusted them enough to let me attend Field Day under the watchful eyes of a few Elmers, once again before I was even a teenager. Today, I’m not so sure this would happen. Sure, times have changed, but do we really need to drag our polarizing politics into this once all-welcoming and mutually respectful community? For me, personally, I get enough politics from TV, social media, and even my in-laws. Enough, already.

Yes there are some hams that like to talk about that all the time. Some encouragement is that it's not really a majority of what you hear. Most people just talk about things that go on in their daily lives. 20 meters you have a lot of DX stations, not a lot of rag chewers on there, but there are some. 40M and 80M is a lot of people that rag chew all the time since they usually know each other. I've never been on 160 which is supposed to be a friendly band. I've never had an antenna long enough, so I couldn't tell you how the conversations go. I also spend time on 2M. I don't like talking on repeaters, luckily my area has a group on simplex. Politics does come up from time to time on various bands, but I wouldn't say its the dominant topic. But I can understand not wanting to hear about it. We get enough of that already... 😀.

The best way to pass the test is to memorize the question and correct answer together. I had all the questions and answers on paper, and I marked out all the incorrect answers with a black sharpie, and just went over and over what was left. As far as trash phones, they are better put in the trash where trash belongs. I have a nice flip phone, with actual buttons, no touch screen, no operating system, and absolutely no internet. I have never used any kind of computer combined with amateur radio equipment. All my radios are pre computer. My HF radio is a Yaesu FT-DX 560, from the early '70s. It's a huge, heavy, tube radio, which I completely rebuilt by myself, and it works beautifully. Nothing "digital" about it. Amateur radio is about radio, not computers.

Cell phones... Free long distance. Amateur operators who want nothing to do with new operators except to bark rules at them. A remnant of the past... It's a broken, abandoned swath of radio spectrum waiting to be reassigned. Tons of dead frequencies, squawking and noise. Old guys discussing the weather and complaining about the government on plug and play systems. Uninformed opinions and hearsay. Not much else.

So yea, they do pay attention.
