Also something to note around Mighty Car Mods: we are normal guys and are not trained mechanics. We like to make interesting car mods and show you how we've gone about it, but we can't promise that anything we show you will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car or your warranty doing it. Please be safe, be responsible and unless you know what you're doing, do not fool around with very serious machinery just because you've seen us make it look so easy. Talk to a qualified mechanic if you are in any doubt.

    @zonander the video isn't intended as a full guide, more just showing whats possible with the tools and initiative. Some cars you don't lose the fluid from the gearbox when removing shafts, in this case we didn't lose much, and the box had been overfilled previously so it didn't need much of a top up at all.

    OMG. I'm in Saskatchewan Canada. We are all going nuts here over some new laws that just took effect on june 27th 2014. The police are aloud to put photoradar in 3 school zones and on a freeway we call Ring Road. They can also impound your vehicle if you get caught speeding 35km over the speed limit twice. A 3 day impound. People are nuts about it here. We have absolutely no checks (we call it a safety) on our cars though. Unless a car is in a reported accident (lots of people don't report fender benders) the car is never safety'd. It also needs a safety if bought from out of province. The thing with that is, if the car is bought out of province and 35 years or older, no safety or emissions check is required, and it can get plated (reggo'd) for a year for $149. I am so happy to live where i do right now.

    Yeah In Australia it is pretty bad, You go 10 over the speed limit and can risk losing your license for a year, you drive a car with rust and have to take it to the mechanic within the next two weeks to be fixed. If you modify your car, insurance is more and also you risk getting tagged by the police for the smallest offences. Example my friend got 18" rims on his Hatchback and and nice exhaust, Police pulled him over for "hooning" now he has his car taken from him for 3 months. Keep in kind only a quarter of Australia has available public transport and we have the most expensive taxis in the world so yeah it is pretty bad in the land down under.

    In Victoria Australia if you are caught over 40kph you will lose your car for 28 days on the spot (towed away at your expense). Third time your car is crushed! No exceptions. To tell the truth it's worked really well, with most dicks losing their license very quickly.

    the last step is so true! had bought a 96 car with no hubcaps and unwashed, first year safety inspection (3 years ago) was passed but they told me everything from the lug nuts were too rusty to be safe all the way too every drive train component needed replacement yet the next years inspection I had hubcaps and washed it (no other changes) and the same guy gave it a sticker with no other complaints! (could've just been his mood, but still, show you care and they seem to be far more lenient!)

    I saw that you clamped the brakecaliper hose. To avoid damaging the hose you can use a trick that I have learned. Push the brake down around half way and then let it go back a little bit NOT ALL THE WAY UP. Secure the brakepedal with something so it stays like 3/4 way up. This makes a vaccum in the brakelines so the oil don't get out

    6:36 "Tighten up the drive shaft nuts TIGHT." WRONG! That will destroy your bearings. The whole purpose of having the castle nut and cotter pin is to keep it from loosening because it's not supposed to be very tight. Usually snug it up and then back off a quarter turn. You want it to be JUST tight enough to take out the play in the bearings. Over torquing it mashes the bearings into the races and you get to start over again. Cool show guys! Just wanted to straighten out that bit of misinformation. Keep on being awesome!

    Yes and no. On this particular car, the front wheel bearings are ballbearings. This means than the nut is only fastening the inner ring of the bearing. You would have to tighten the nut ridiculously hard in order to harm the bearing. You would probably destroy the threads before the actual bearing. The bearings you are reffering to are rollerbearings, which should only be tightend until the wheelhub cant move inwards or outwards, just as you where explaining :-) So the boys actually did it as it should be done. Sorry for any spelling errors as my english is kinda' rubbish ;-)

  • @antinormality

    @antinormality

    9 жыл бұрын

    LaoTseo That's exactly right! In the case of ball type bearings in the sealed assembly - like this 1994 Nissan Pulsar - LeoTseo is right! In my experience, ball bearings are much less common than roller bearings. Just be mindful of what kind of bearings you have. Marty and Moog DID do the proper procedure for their particular car, but if you're doing this on your own car, there's a good chance you have roller bearings, in which case you should follow the procedure I described above. Thanks LaoTseo!

  • @LaoTseo

    @LaoTseo

    9 жыл бұрын

    antinormality Well you're very welcome. A rule of thumb states that most FWD cars will be fitted with a ball-type bearing on the front axle, and roller-type bearings at the rear. Whereas RWD cars usually have it the other way around :-)

You didn't mention how much any of your replacement parts cost or if it took you the three days to do all the work. Did it work out so that buying, fixing and reselling would pocket you a little profit? Any vehicle in the UK with 12 months MOT is golden, is it the same in Oz?

    Here in Brazil in some states don't have even the annual inspection in the cars, is only need pay the taxes and get the new documents of the car, and in the states who does have the inspection, they only checks the lights and the emissions of the car, the real inspection, when they checks the brakes, suspension, and other important things, is only needed when is certified the modifications of the car, like turbo, suspension and other modifications.

    Also, when using brake fluid, always have a 600ml bottle of water handy. If the fluid spills/splashes on paint work or alloy, rinse immediately with the water. Will mostly stop the brake fluid eating paint or staining the alloy. ;)

    Super helpful video. I wonder why we don't have to get mechanic checks here in the US? I always see the guys on Top Gear having to get a MOT, and I had no idea what that was...

    In a lot of places (southern US especially) a car will usually be off the road for other reasons before it becomes tragically unsafe. Unfortunately, here in the Canadian Rust Belt, a car only 2-3 years old could be rendered unsafe due to rust and corrosion, if you don't take preventative measures.

    Out of curiosity one year i took mt car to get 3 pink slips, all 3 had different faults, not one mentioned faults other places had found. the tyre and suspension place said the suspension was leaking/broke, mechanic said needed new engine and gearbox mounts and another said seatbelt was worn and crack in brake light. SO be careful, If you think you are being ripped off get another check. will probably be the best 30ish bucks you spend

    If you're concerned about damage, cover up any wiring and/electrical components. The engine block itself will be fine with cleaners.

    In New South Wales you need to pass one when you transfer rego for a car into your name and every year to re-register it, but the other states only need it when transferring into your name, not every year.

    It's good living in QLD were a mechanic doesn't go over your car every year, if that happened there would be a lot less cars on the road in QLD

    if it's metal on metal, def need new pads, might want to resurface rotors/get new ones. some compounds will squeak regardless, but it's good to check your brake pad indicators, which are usually thin bits of metal on top of the pads, and you can check without assembling anything.

    In Norway, and in many countries in the EU, the cars need to get an inspection every two years, or every year if it is 30 years or older! And they are very picky about even the small stuff that MAY be wrong :p New or newer used cars are usually very expensive, so we just like to hold on to our good old runners!
