I taught my border collie HOW to heel, but he had trouble remembering TO STAY in a heel. The best way I could teach him that this is what I wanted was when he desires to go somewhere, like outside, I made him heel to the door. If he rushes the door, I back up. As soon as he gets by my side, I take a step forward. If he gets too far ahead, I step back. As soon as he returns to my side, he gets rewarded by me approaching the goal: the door. It really worked well for my border collie! 🥰

Gonna try this! 4 months old bc pup here, he knows heel for about 10 seconds..

This is what I found to be the most important bit of information from this video: "If we find that the distractions are too high, you've failed.. Not the dog. You expected too much too soon." Vital bit of information that I feel is often overlooked. Heeling is generally a behavior we want outside of the home so it can be tempting for owners to want to practice it outside of the home. The tasks and behaviors we expect have to be attainable in a controlled environment BEFORE we start testing them around external stimuli. That's the key to success. You have to set them up for a win. Love your channel I think I have watched most of them. Got my border collie 3 weeks ago and it’s great to put into practice what I have seen here. Bowie is 11 weeks old and he is sitting, dropping, touching, heeling (of sorts) mostly. He loves the beach 😀

Thank you tried this today and 4 month old pup got it right away. Collies are so smart but need consistent training ✔️✔️

Our border collie is now 14 months, we got him at 5 months as a rescue and he didn't have any training at all. We spent the first 6 weeks trying to get him out of the house, as he was too scared. As such i think we allowed a little too much freedom on the lead and so we are slightly struggling with lose lead. We purchased a figure 8 lead and he is now staying closer to our side but still pulls in front a lot. This video has been a great help and a fab explanation so thanks for that. we are now going to go back to basics and get that foundation solid.

My border collies me is fenrir! What a coincidence

Love to channel and wanted to ask your thoughts on a gentle leader. We use it for my dog and walks wonderful with it but is it ok to relay on that?

Our collie is just a little over a year and recently has been turned loose full time to run the farm. You can throw a ball or a frisbee till your out of breath and sweating, and she’ll just stand there and wait for you to throw it again. I got a gps tracker to go on her collar to see how much she runs throughout the day, and she averages a little over 25 miles a day so now we’re trying to find a way to slow her down some and make her eat more food. A one of kind dog

I live on a farm so have had to have my puppy on a longline even for toilet breaks - have I ruined it laready? Can he learn to associate heel and the lead as a different ask to “go freeish” on a longline for example?!

would this work on a rescue dog that is not a border collie? x

I have a 7 week old collie I have been watching your videos since I knew I was buying one.Her nose is still mainly pink should I be worried?Also I want to get the heel right the first time I'm wating fir her last injection but I want to learn her on her lead in the garden.She is so smart and already knows alot of tricks she is amazing!!

isn’t 7 weeks a little young for a puppy to be replaced? Just asking... Normally their 8 weeks maybe that’s why her nose is still pink

A puppies nose will be pink for a long time after 8 weeks, shouldn't be worried about that at all.

@@Feya297 yes I though this the person I got her from told me she was 12 weeks when I took her to the vet and done the change of ownership theu said she was born on the 11th of April thats mean the woman I got her from lied and I had her and 6.2 weeks.The vet recommended certain milk ect for her I felt so bad for her but she is doing so good now she is amazing

Awesome. But how do you walk the dog before the heel is 100% ? Ive got a 7 month rescue collie who needs daily walks and exercise but has no lead manners at all. I can't wait til she's good on the lead to walk her..?

Hey Robert, you can walk them on either side it doesn't matter as long as your constant. Left is traditionally what is looked for when competing 😊

I'm raising a 9 month mix of 4 herding breeds. There is a noticable difference in his response when on the left side, and when looked in the left eye. I mean, night-and-day difference. I have a 12 year old, mutt, who also responds better on the left side. I'm not sure he can tell which eye I'm looking at, anymore. So, while it may be a competition standard, I think it may have come about because they just respond better on the left. Small sample size, I know, but it couldn't have become a competition standard by accident.

Hello, I adopted a six month old border collie. How do I begin training him. He is already toilet trained and sits. When we walk he pulls so I walk with a short leash. He was traumatized during the first six months of his life, so I am working on making feel safe as well.

Hi. I think that you mention something which is important. You mention that your dog had a rough start. The best thing you can do for him / her is forget this. You are his / her new start. Day zero. Your Collie will have loads of energy and will be exceptionally intelligent. You need to exercise and work them. Challenge them by teaching them tricks or climbing obstacles. They respond to lots of instruction. Be consistent and patient (though they learn VERY quickly!). I run with mine and have had her running alongside my bicycle quite happily. Don't be timid with him / her. They are working dogs. You need to be their boss and reinforce good behaviour. Don't think about your dog's past (he won't be thinking about it if you give him an energetic and rewarding life). I have a 4 year old Collie / Shepherd (Shollie). She came from a rescue centre. She's beautiful and intelligent, and very cheeky!!

I have been doing heel work for my border collie for awhile and he absolutely hate it he doesn't eat treats when outside he's to hyper when in a heel I think I walk too slow because he's walks to fast for me

Same when I do off leash he run off but comes when I want him to but gets easy distracted by other animals but comes if no one’s out I just want him to sit next to me and walk next to me

Training with treats did not work for me. In a controlled environment it was fine but outdoors in an urban environment the dog is too distracted or excited. Won't even consider food treats.

In my opinion/experience they are free running dogs and better off the lead. My old collie was superb, but never appreciated the lead and I never got this fabled loose lead heel, even as a grandma dog on her last day with us... She would walk to heel perfectly with no lead.

I have a dumb question. If the dog is in training mode on a walk, how do they pee and poop? Or do you not have them in heel during a portion of the walk so they can pee and poop?

@@claireingram1818 its important from the very beginning to teach them to sit when a car comes your way. of course teach sit first a strong reaction sit. then kneel and comfort\ rub chest as car goes by eventually they will just sit and watch car. i know im 4 months late but has worked wonders on my 12 week old bc pup.

Does your dog know "leave it?" If so, grab your leash and go stand by the road (a quiet road, with clear views of both direction). Have pooch sit, and tell them to leave it, when they notice a car (I tell mine "that's a car"). Give physical corrections as needed. Stay calm, stay consistent, and praise the ever-living-jesus out of him/her when they get it right. If not, teach it "leave it." It's in my Holy Trinity of commands, including stay/come. Walking through parking lots is a good way to teach what cars/trucks are, and to leave them, also.

But the walk IS the exercise… so how do you train to walk to heal when they’re hyperactive DURING the exercise…

Why heel on the left? Walking along a road I would face the traffic by walking on the right. Heeling left would put my dog nearest to passing traffic.

@@FenrirCanineLeaders even this link you have supplied titled 'how to achieve perfect heel walking' shows no guidance but only shares the importance principal of being pack leader. Thats not a how to video any more than this video is. I agree with the original comment. So much chatter, so little content. Even if you are hiding your real training behind a paywall, which is a fair strategy, why not be honest and more organised about that in your videos. Why not explain detail around the training and then link to the actual specific training. You are failing to supply videos which uphold your video titles. You are also failing to use the titles as 'false advertising' to promote your real content properly and accurately. Just feels totally disorganised like this is a hobby. For the record i really want to like your channel as you have a charismatic appearance and an interesting accent, but the strategy needs work.
