How to Get Up from a Chair Using Your Walker with the Stagger Step Technique

Is it hard to get up from a chair using your walker? Leg weakness, injuries, recent surgeries with restricted weight bearing, and even amputations can make it very hard to get up from a chair or bed to a walker.
In this video, you will learn the Stagger Step Technique that I teach when someone has difficulty getting up to the walker.

My walker doesn't have the braking device. I will try this with my roller, which has the brakes. You showed how to not tip the walker to the weaker side, which is kind of my fear. Thank you again for another clear and informative lesson. peace

What should you do if the chair you are sitting in has no arm rests?

Excellent question. That is my problem. I have a hard time getting up if I don't have something to hold onto.

Great question. It can be tricky when someone sits in a chair without arm rests. Some people are able to perform this technique with just one hand on the side of the chair seat next to their thigh. Others have some success putting one of their hands between their legs at the front of the chair seat. Another helpful suggestion that some do is to use the table or surface they are sitting next to (like at a restaurant for example). But be careful here because sometimes those tables and such can tip over. Finally, there can be an incorporation of both the stagger step technique and some of the steps demonstrated in my "5 Simple steps to stand from a chair" video found here ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoanubaal9iapJM.html ) that can be used to help. I hope that helps! Stay safe and independent 😊

Makes sense, but you forgot to tell people to put the brakes on before doing this. It may be obvious to you but not to someone who's new at this. At the hospital the rollator that they gave me to use, the brakes didn't even work and when I came home I was told to buy a rollator but I keep forgetting to use the brakes, so it can be more like an amusement park ride😂

For sure! Yep, it's always a must to put the brakes on. Rollators can be great! I also made a video covering some of the basics of the Rollators as well here : kzread.info/dash/bejne/k5h3rcx6eK68h5s.html I hope you find it helpful. Stay safe and independent! 😊

@@yourPTguy I live on a second floor, do you have any tricks for getting the rollator down a flight of stairs and back up? I only go out for medical appointments right now because the men from the adapted transport carry it up and down for me. I can't leave it outside it will get stolen and I don't know how much rain it can take. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Would you provide tips on getting up from a chair or a sofa when walking with a cane, please? I used to be able to push myself up with 3 pushes (1-2-3), but since my rotator cuffs have become very painful, I have to get up with 5-8 pushes, and it’s much more scary. I have no cartilage in either knee, pain in rotator cuffs and shoulders, an arthritis pain in my fingers, hands, and wrists (carpal tunnel as well). My injuries are from an auto accident where a city bus T-boned my car. I had to be cut out of the car with the jaws of life. I also had a Traumatic Brain Injury which impeded my getting help post injury. It’s now 14 years later, and I feel like I’m falling apart. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Wow! What an accident! I'm glad you survived such a horrible accident. A very similar thing happened to my wife at an intersection when she was in the passenger side of the car. God placed an ambulance there right on the spot where and when it happened! They jumped out, intubated her on the spot, and trauma-hawked her via helicopter to the trauma hospital, not expecting her to make it through the night. She made it! As for getting up from a sofa/chair, have you heard of the Carex Upeasy Seat Assist Plus? It's like a cushion that springs you up when you try to stand up from a chair or sofa. A couple of my clients have had it in the past and loved them. Amazon has it online or probably some local durable medical equipment places may be able to order one. Sometimes these can be super helpful when people don't have same "structural mechanics" in their joints and muscles that they once did.
