How to get the MOST out of your vocab cards - Ask Ethan

In this clip from our Community Q&A, Ethan tackles the question: Which are better, word or sentence cards?
As always, the answer is not as cut and dry as you might think. It depends on what your goals are for Anki, your tolerance for large amounts of reviews, and your personal ability to recall words without context.
Tune in to listen to Ethan and Ben share their experience to help you decide which type of vocab card is best for you.

I got bored on my Refold deck after a while and changed all of them to sentence cards and it really helped to stay engaged. So conversion is great.

I'm sure some of us are forever trying to improve our flash cards to maximize our learning. I've also tried phrase cards instead of sentence/vocab cards. And then there's audio cards, closed delete, production (just english or a picture on side 1). And all of them can stimulate your brain a little differently and I've found that it all seems to depend on the specific word which type of card I need for it. But You don't know that up front until you've been trying to learn the word for a while. It's kind of a catch 22. And especially if you're towards the beginner side of things you might be looking for pre-made decks which are all or nothing. And you might start thinking you can just do all of the above but then you'll be doing Anki ALL day. My experience with sentence cards (with Korean as a strong A2 or weak B2) overall has been that they're harder to rep because reading several words instead of just one word and seeing if I remember it takes more effort. Which means the effort to dopamine effect ratio is reduced so that repping my flash cards is less fun. Consequently I've not been consistent with sentence cards. My favorite deck for Koeran is Evita's Vocabulary deck which has NO sentences. But her choice of what words to study, along with the concise English definitions, has made it so nice to study and it feels more useful than anything else. I haven't found an add on that will easily add sentences to this deck though. EDIT The new 4.0 Chat GPT seems to give good example sentences for Korean now. (Before it often translated the target word wrong and who knows what the sentences it gave meant. )

Just do 5 different sentence cards for given word and this will increase the involvement load. I believe this will make it easier remembering it.

In my experience the most important thing is to have example contexts where it's used, and a sentence so you know how the word fits in and how to use it. But yes, you should try to remember the word without relying on the sentence, too. I have also observed this. It makes more sense to hide the sentence first. Also, if it's a very obvious noun that can't really mean anything else, then I find a sentence not that necessary.

I've been using Anki for four weeks now, and I recognized this issue too. It's really easy to remember the meaning while using Anki, but unfortunately, it's not easy to remember when you come across the word in a different context. On the other hand, when it comes to active recalling, there's no easy way; you have to remember. I realized that I remember the words better if I either really want to learn them or struggle to remember them. Active recall causes struggle, and it may look bad in the short term, but when it comes to the long term, it's really helpful. And I always add sentences to my cards, and after a while, if I feel I've learned the word, I turn it into a sentence card. To be honest, I started to do that only one week ago, and I've never turned a vocabulary card into a sentence card, but it's part of the plan.

And only 4 weeks into Anki. That’s a good idea. You can just manually change the card to make it active recall etc as appropriate.

Very helpful! Thanks lads. I noticed with some cards I like remember "oh this is that one sentence" and I just memorise the "answer", so it's sorta cheating. But since most of acquisition is in immersion, is it not kinda the point?

Imo Words for proper nouns (if you can be bothered or care), otherwise sentences.

I have a question: Should I suspend cards on anki that are just the same word in my native language but with the russian cirilic Alphabet? Like телефон = Teléfono?

Yes. Anki is only there to help you be aware of things in your immersion. If seeing телефон makes you think of phone right away, then there's no need to have it in Anki. Anything that's super easy you should suspend.
