I had some clients of mine come to me with a challenge.
"Can you give this buffet the 'Arhaus' look?"
They provided this picture from one of the company's catalogs and pointed out that it was the Earl Grey finish on the table that they wanted to recreate.
It's not easy to reverse-engineer a finish for a piece of furniture but I was willing to give it a shot.
I've worked on some pieces in the past where I had used a similar technique.I first had to take off the slick, orange finish that the buffet was currently wearing.
After removing the door and drawers, I sanded the whole piece down to the raw wood. The original finish didn't put up too much of a fight and I was able to able to get the whole piece sanded in an afternoon.
Thank goodness!
After cleaning away the dust I started to think up a strategy to get the weathered look.
I started with watering down some Valspar Belgian White paint.
2 parts paint, 1 part water. I haphazardly brushed the paint mixture on, leaving it on for about a minute and then wiping it away with a damp rag. I did 3 coats of this technique until I got my desired look.
After letting the layered white wash dry over night it was then time to add a stain combination.
I consulted my stain stash and I chose Minwax's Classic Gray and Jacobean to layer on. I also add weather oak to the mix just incase.
Using some latex gloves to protect my hands, I applied the first coat of stain with foam brushes and then wiping it off with a clean rag.
I started with classic gray and decided against using Jacobean because I felt like it had a little too much red in it. I choose to use weathered oak instead to enhance the gray.
The was still too much of the orange from the raw oak showing through and we need to darken the grain of the wood.
I thought maybe a black stain would help to combat the warmth but I was fresh out!
My solution was to cut a little bit of black paint with some water, brush it on and wipe it away with a damp cloth ASAP.
I decided to apply the mixture to the whole piece.
Brushing it on and using a damp cloth to wiping it off after a few seconds was key to keeping the paint from saturating the entire piece.
Finally I just had to stop and walk away.
There is such a thing as over-working something and a project like this could easily get away from me.
I let it sit over night before completing the final touches and the last thing to apply before adding hardware was a top coat.
I like to use Minwax's water based polycrylic protective finish in clear matte for almost everything I work on and this project was no exception.
All it needed was a thin coat.
After letting it dry it was time to add hardware.
I tried using what the buffet came with originally but the client wanted to mix it up and we decided to try painting the hardware black.
I didn't want the black to look too new so I did a light mist of an age bronze spray paint on top.
I styled the piece with some ironstone mixing bowls and an old bull horn.
This piece has a lot of structural detail already and could easily be over-styled if I add much more.
I had the chance to try to re-create the Arhaus 'Earl Grey' finish and it might not be perfect but I think I got pretty close.
The hardest part of this whole project was finding the right combination of paint and stains to toning down the natural orange-i-ness of the oak.
I was hoping to achieve the look with less product (paint, 2 different stains, more paint) but I'm okay with where we ended up.

Looks like a factory finish. Super job!!
Love the look!-and simplicity of instructions. Very well explained!
Beautiful. The oak grain really pops. Do you apply the stains in equal amounts over the whole surface? Or do you intermix them? How long between the different stains do you wait to apply the next color stain? Thank you!
I’ve watched hours of videos trying to find what to do with my golden oak kitchen cabinets. I want a white on white that shows off the oak wood grain, but needs to have a durable finish that will hold up to cleaning of pasta sauce, greasy residue, and take stray water sprinkles and steam. THIS. I’m going to do this. Thanks so much for the inspiration. I’ll just stick with light tan and white paint and stain colors and follow with min wax polycrylic. Excellent video, both for content and for making it so watchable. Thanks!!
So gorgeous. I learned a lot. I'm trying to whitewash a dresser, but I like the grayish look. Thanks.
I’m impressed! That is beautiful and I thank you for sharing your very detailed technique. I’m going to do that . So beautiful!!!i am subbing to your channel. You just popped up in my feed and I’m so glad chance brought your talented little self my way!!!

Absolutely beautiful great job 👏👏👏👏👏
What I love best is the clothes and shoes you paint in because I thought I was the only one to wear such attire. I mean you gotta be comfortable when you're painting. Flannel pjs and slippers or boat shoes are just da best for painting in!

I do mine a little differently but glad I watched yours as a Furniture painter I always love learning new finishes and being able to recreate finishes that most can't. It gives you an edge over the competition over the chalk paint everything Furniture painters. Lol not everything needs to be chalk painted. 😂

Gorgeous !!!!!
I love this look. I want to get that grayish color on some red seader I have had in my house forever, but I'm scared that the red will bleed through from the seader on whatever I decide. Do you think that this would work, or do you think I need to find something that I can do over a primer or like a kilz ?
I love it!!!!

Looks great! I would have a hard time parting with that piece, but you absolutely killed me painting without a drop cloth on those beautiful floors, I would have runined them and had a husband mad for sure!! LOL Great information and glad your mouth is better.

Nicely Done, like your hair and eye shadow...stay safe and warm...
Just now seeing this!! Wow no spills and no drop cloth. I would have it all over me lol. Love this finish ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
I love that look! I was wondering if you would have any advice for me. The store I just bought has a façade wood fence on the wall. They painted it black! It looks horrid! I would like to get a white washed look like the light gray white washed look but I don’t know what to do for a base. What would you do over the black initially? Thanks for any advice.
Awesome tutorial. I got the Arhaus look by purchasing the sample table you showed (the price tag, aggg!) but it is stunning

I love how you did that dresser. I have one. I have a whole bedroom set that I might just try that on. It's pretty and you did a good job on it. This doesn't have the mark on it, but I know when you're doing a lot of antiquing. I've watched almost every one of your videos. What is that little stamp that's on the bottom of the jar of the glassware that you buy cuz I noticed you like to buy the stuff that has that little stamp. What is that stamp mean?
what type of paint do you use for this? I want to do a kitchen table. Do I need to put something over it when it is done to be able to wash the table off each day?
Beautiful! You're so funny!
Great job
Love your work, would you mind listing the products you use ?
On a hardwood floor with no drop cloth?? Wow. Impressive!!
Would this technique work with different colors? I want something similar, but more honey/gold/dark brown....?
Great video! I’m wondering if someone could make the grain more pronounced by using a dark stain first then sanding it so it’s removed from the high spots. The proceed with white paint etc as you did

Did u apply black paint over stain?? Does that stay??
Thanks for the info on doing the refinish. You start with watered down paint then move onto stain. Are those oil based stains and then you are covering over with a water based paint. If so do you have to wait a certain amount of time before the stains can cure? Thanks :) Sorry not a fan of the music
I still have trouble understanding the antiquing technics. I’m a perfectionist so whenever I see stain not stick to the wood I just want to give up and start all over! Lol this was a great video and shows there’s no right or wrong way of doing it. But obviously u know what your doing! Loved your technic by the way. 👍
How did you sand it? It looks amazing! My coffee table also has has so many grooves and rounded corners? Please help I’m new to this...

Hello Lydia. How are you doing?
Hi Amanda. Thank you for the video. Do I need to sand the furniture to get the look you have? Can Ido it without sanding? Thank you
@amandasmercantile
3 жыл бұрын
Yes! You will need to get down to raw wood to be able to property layer the paint/stain & still have the wood grain show through.
