One surpring tool I picked up for leather tooling: a small crochet hook for very tiny details that the beveler stamp can't get to. You use the back of the hook like a stylus and it does a pretty decent job.

About half a year ago I found a great kit online: multiple spools or wax thread, half a dozen needles in various shapes and sizes, assortment of stitching chisels, edge beveler, edge groover, scissors, measuring tape, thimble and two awls. All for just over €50. So I totally agree. Getting started does not have to cost an arm and a leg. #craft

I've worked for two different companies that fabricated and sold solid surface countertops. While most will have broken or random scraps, they likely won't be sink cutouts but more strips and corner cuts. Solid surface is poured in lots like paint, and can be repaired, but if you repair it with a piece from a different lot, you can oftentimes see the difference in the particulates. So any place worth their salt will leave the sink cutouts with the customer to keep for possible repairs on their new and expensive countertops. That said laminate and stone tops can't really be repaired in the same way so those cutouts are likely fair game if they are kept at all.

This is so incredibly helpful. As someone who's just starting out, here are the tools I found I needed, in order: 1.) Knife 2.) Rivet tool 3.) Hammer 4.) Needles 5.) Stitching chisel(two-tine if you can only get one, but you'll definitely also want a four-tine also) 6.) Groover 7.) Hole punches 8.) Beveler And that's actually as far as I've gotten so far. I've made a medieval ring belt, some pouches and wrist straps. My next project is gonna be a costrel. You can do a lot of stuff just fastening with rivets before you get into stitching. I would learn the basics of stitching before you move on to tooling, but that's just my preference. Also, if you get the cheap Harbor Freight hole punches and have trouble getting them to cut, there are some tricks you can use. Add a little beeswax to the cutting edge before punching each hole. If you're really struggling, and the punch is small enough, you can even chuck it into a power drill and use it just like a drill bit. It cuts through almost instantly!

This was soooo helpful! I bought a 60 year old briefcase at Goodwill a few months ago. I convinced myself that I would convert it into a fully functional modern briefcase. Which, naturally, meant I needed to make a leather 'sleeve' to hold my laptop with pockets for my phone/powerbank/etc, that I'd glue into the old case. So I made a trap for myself by thinking "Oh you're crafty! How hard could leather working be? You helped the cub scouts do it after all!" I feel so lost just looking at the tools. I've got a template already made and a double shoulder of 4/5 Oz leather. The trick is, I can't even start the project. I can't start because I look at the tools section of Tandy or Springfield and feel so out of depth I just freeze 😅. So thanks for narrowing things down, let's #craft this bad boy!

Just a warning about the edge beveler from Weaver, made by horseshoe brand, with the plastic tan handle and interchangeable tips. The sizes are bigger than listed. They take off more of the corner than they should. Chuck dorsett of Weaver leather gave a good tip I liked about the bevel should take off a quarter to a third at most of the width.

I'm a blacksmith and I mostly use leather for knife sheathes and straps, especially for LARP and SCA articulated armor. My first real tool was a punch because nails can punch a hole through leather but don't don't remove leather, meaning that leather "heals" itself and rivets don't fit very well.

I’ve gotten into leatherworking a lot after I found this channel. I’m generally busy as I work in construction and have a young baby now. I prefer working with chrome tan and on occasion veg tan. I’ve made a few leather totes, I made dnd dice tray scrolls I made a set of Christmas stockings and some other projects around tool belts. If I were to make a recommendations if you’re busy or limited on space I prefer using leather scissors over a knife to make cuts. I use an awl to trace out the shapes on my project so I know where I’m making cuts. I also almost always use an 18inch ruler. Good luck to any new crafters! And practice on your scraps don’t just toss them. Good luck winning that prize y’-all I’m sure it’ll be amazing.

A nice metal ruler is another thing needed. I would also point out that you may want to consider going with a maul rather than a mallet, most of the choice there is personal preference because both do the job but which is better is more up to the person. For needles, you really want a separate storage for your leather needles compared to normal sewing ones. But the only needles that I've specifically bought is a permalock needle, the others I've gotten came from ones that were included with the various Tandy kits #craft

I have half of the belt leather left and of the many tips you just mentioned I kinda wish I had some of those tools. I mean a needle set, forks and a awl can only get you so far. I even used sissors to cut the leather and the awl to punch holes to set the threaded rivets. Overall my dog is super happy for what he got. Its just a dress collar and slips over his head and has one of those buckle clips. The next one I make will have a lot more stitching and some stamping and more conchs.

#craft I first got into leather when I worked at a boot shop, but sadly it closed and I lost access to all those lovely tools. The owner took pity on me and gave me a box of odds and ends he was going to get rid of, so I got a skiver, some dyes I have no idea if they're still good, and some things I'm not sure what they are which lead me to watching your videos. The one thing I have used as a replacement for stamps until I can get some is a leather burner. I've made some fun stuff with that. Also, another alternative to tiles the guy gave me is a chunk of gravestone. Not the most convenient (soooo heavy and awkward to move around) but it does work well

#craft you got me into leatherworking and I am super proud of a bag I have made for my sister in law for christmas, and I only started in October! Having more tools would be amazing, and keep pushing what I can do. My main limit at the moment I think is where to get cheap leather and what to get, as I don't really want to buy a big bit just to practice on or if I have no idea what to do with it. I also have some friends who got a few slate samples to decide what they wanted in their kitchen, all ~10cm square. Might be enough for a small solid surface. In the end they didn't get their kitchen done, but used the samples as costers :-D

Been keeping up with your work for a few months now since I started going to Renaissance Faires and I've even taken up sewing and modifying my own garb because of you! I will without a doubt use several of your videos to make my own leather pieces for my mystic traveler character. I'm fortunate to live near a Tandy's so a starter leatherworking kit would push me over the edge to finally make my own belt, boots, and maybe even some sweet bracers!

#craft I have bin training Marshallarts since I was a kid. And I have bin thinking for the longest time that I need a bag for my training wepens. And it hit me that it would look amazing to make it out of leather. And having proper tools would be a great motivator to get started in making the bag.

This video has the perfect timing for me. I saw all the videos for leather in the channel and want it to try to make some things. I just got 2kg of leather and earlier today I was searching for a video in this channel about leather tools . Some hours later I saw the notification for the new video...just perfect!!! #craft

DANG IT! You inspired me to Leatherwork over the last month. LAST week I went to Tandy and bought tools. Besides spending way too much on tooling stamps, I followed your list closely. I suggest adding a cork-backed straight edge/ruler. I have seen a number of videos proposing resharpening the razor craft blades. Is it worth your time / money? Be Well and Good Journey. Richie

#CRAFT I've been watching you for a while now and really love your energy and creativity with everything you do. I'd love to get into leather working. Some of my favorite videos so is the one where you "leveled up" your pauldrons, the coffee alchemy kit, and the ranger cloak. All projects I hope to add to may outfit for ren faire. Keep up the amazing work and sharing your craft.

That's such a big help for me right now. Thanks to your videos I've finally got the motivation to make a belt for that cool Celtic Cross buckle that I had lying around for ages. And now I'm hooked on leather crafting but don't have a big budget. I bought a leather strap - and some scrap leather to test on first - at a newly opened LARP store and so far only used a rotary punch, my dad's old military knife that has an awl, some upholstery needles and parcel string as cordage. I still have to get the edges smooth though. Gotta try that rug method. But like the rest of my garb it's an ongoing process and one has to begin somewhere. My grandma even may have some of those tools lying around in granddad's old workshed. I'm pretty sure a lot of stuff "fell off the truck" when the shoe factory he worked for since he left school moved it's production to far east Asia in the 90s. 😅

Keep an eye on the various Marketplaces you have access to - recently someone nearby was offloading their old kit so I picked up a swivel knife and a handful of stamps (plus a few other sundries; an extra mallet nearby is never a bad thing) for an absolute steal. I'd definitely relegated those kinds of things to the "Maybe later if I'm ever making money off this" pile, but I'm stoked to find a place for them all in the ol' workshop to give a more professional finish to my tinkering. #CRAFT

Unfortunately, choice paralysis kicked in and I couldn't decide on which toolkit to buy - your recommendations on the Amazon list will certainly help! Have some plans to make a couple of pouches and a pair of bracers to begin with, before moving on to... other thing! #craft

#craft Y'know, I've been meaning to get into the hobby because I had the harebrained idea that I want to make a Bag of Holding based on the official item art in the handbook, but I want to make it out of leather (at least partially - some of it may be canvas). I just don't have the tools yet, but someday I WILL make it a reality! This is a great jumping off point for that!!

Thank you so much for this video! I know you made one like it earlier, and I was recently contemplating going back to try to find it. Now I have an updated version :) I bought a kit around this time last year, but it ended up not having key things like a swivel knife or a bevel stamp. One of the tools that did come with it came broken. I made one project with the kit and put the rest on hold because of the lacking and broken tools. Now that it has been about a year, it felt time to pick it up again and figure out which tools to get to supplement the kit I got last year. This video was incredibly helpful. Thanks! #craft

#craft Leathercrafting is something I've been contemplating doing for a long time - a couple of decades or more. Lack of money and a place to buy the tools and leather from has been preventing me. But looking at your list of ten starter tools is very helpful as I can see that I have a couple of these things already - namely the surfaces to hit things on. I love watching your videos and I'm getting closer to actually getting my act together and having a go at some leather crafting.
