How to get started with 1Password

In this video, I show you how to get started with 1Password.

1Password is a password manager that remembers all your passwords, software licenses, secure notes, credit cards and other private information. It makes logging into your internet accounts quick and secure.
If you use the same (or similar) passwords for all your accounts, your digital security is compromised. 1Password lets you create a strong, unique password for each account.

    @@paulminors So if I am correct, they do not provide a “ forgot password” feature? I have a master idea. Instead of having to worry about losing your master because there is no feature for a lost password. Why don’t they use customizable 3 security questions for lost password. For example you write your own security question. Example. What was the name of the girl your 1st girlfriend was jealous of? Or What was the name of the coworker that owed you money but only paid you half of it back? These are examples of question NOBODY can guess. I don’t use this software so I don’t know if they do or don’t offer password recovery. If they don’t .. they should!

    Excellent advice. Thank you Paul. I would like to use 1Password Family plan. I want to use it on my Android phone and Windows corporate laptop. My wife will use it on iPhone and Mac. I can install 1Password app and browser extension on my phone, but I cannot install them on my corporate laptop due to my company restrictions. Thus I have the following questions: 1) Will I be still able to use 1Password on my corporate laptop? 2) Will I be able to automatically sync the corporate laptop with my phone and other devices (my wife's)? 3) What will be the main drawbacks using 1Password on my corporate laptop without app and extension?

  • @paulminors

    @paulminors

    Hi Marcin, 1) Possibly, if you can login to your 1Password account via the web, you could then access everything. 2) Not if you haven't downloaded the app, but again if you access it via the web I think this would be a good workaround for you. 3) It'll be a bit clunkier when you need to access login information and login. The extension makes it very quick and easy to fill in login information.

    In your demo you use a random birthday, is that what you recommend (won't that make account recovery later impossible in case that's needed), or did you do that just because you were doing the demo and didn't want to show your real birthday? Also, if you change your master password, I assume it generates a new sequence of characters/numbers and you'll get an updated emergency kit?

    Thanks for the helpful video. I’ve upgraded to the family plan to add my spouse. How do you manage multiple family members using the same computer and logging on? I’m trying to set up our desktop so that we can both use the app when we’d like to login, but I can’t seem to find a way to add her to it so that she can just use the app to access her account if she wants. Does she have to use a browser on the desktop every time she wants to access her passwords? Thanks.

    Hi Bradley, on your computer, are you using one shared login, or do you each have separate logins? I believe if you have separate logins that you'll be able to each access your own 1P account.

    Hi Paul, This is a great tutorial and I found it very helpful. I linked several accounts to 1Password. However, I'm now trying to create a new PW generated by 1Password on one of my existing investment accounts, and the 1Password icon doesn't appear in the username, in the existing PW field, or in the new PW field. I had already entered my username and existing PW and the website address in my vault in 1Password. And now when I go to two bank websites that I had already linked to 1Password a couple of weeks ago, I'm not getting the 1Password icon prompt (the encircled keyhole symbol) to enter the PWs I had saved. Argh. Can you help please?

    Hm, that's odd. Normally the 1P logo appears anywhere that it detects a username/password field. It could be an issue with your browser or the extension. Maybe try deleting the extension and installing again. If that doesn't help, I'd recommend reaching out to the 1P team for support.

    Hi Tom, I'm afraid there's no easy solution here. You would need to save each one one-by-one. I had a similar challenge when getting started. I simply made it a habit whenever I logged into an account to make sure I saved the login and changed it to a more secure password if needed. This way you can gradually update all passwords over time.

Is there a 1password server, which if it goes down means that I cannot access anything? I wouldn't recommend this. External drives can fail over time and you wouldn't want to lose your passwords due to a hardware issue.
