Guided fishing trips: www.fishcastangling.com
How to get started fishing Fort Peck and Sakakawea! I’m coming up on 10 years living in the area and have learned many things the hard way and have a lot more to learn... but here is some ideas to consider especially if you’d like to visit these waters for the first time! Hopefully there’s perspective or tips you can gain from this video even if you’ve fished these waters for many years as well. The main focus with this video is big concepts to get started and some of my favorite species and times of the year to catch them (smallmouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, walleye).
Chapters
0:00-5:40 About me, some fun facts about the reservoirs, and the baitfish that make these lakes tick.
5:40-8:49 Remoteness of the lakes. Boat launches and places to stay (or lake thereof).
8:50-15:30 Homework to do before going to the lakes. Which map chips work best and where. How to adjust for water level fluctuations. Using satellite imagery to your advantage.
15:32-25:32 More big picture concepts to apply to your fishing to capitalize on the bites. Understanding what the baitfish are doing. Finding fish. Efficiency. Patterning fish.
25:24-29:58 Techniques for walleye and fun multi species days fishing back bays around emerald shiners on Sakakawea.
30:00-38:25 June and July walleye techniques on Sakakawea.
38:27-42:40 Spring and summer northern pike techniques.
42:47-46:35 Post spawn through Ice up approaches for smallmouth bass.
46:38-50:00 Fort Peck lake trout deep structure jigging.
I offer guided trips on Lake Sakakawea (and hopefully soon to come on Fort Peck). Check out my website for more info. www.fishcastangling.com

I listened to it three times stuck in Chicago traffic. It was the most amazingly enjoyable tragic jam of my entire life. I can’t wait to actually be able to look at the screen and play it once more. That might be the best presentation I have ever heard on ANY topic. I wish you had been my teacher in high school. I probably would have turned out a lot better. Thank you...Amazing. there may have been a few men with as much knowledge when I was young. But you could not pry it out of them with a crowbar. You are amazingly articulate and even more amazingly generous. God bless you and all you love; and may everyone you encounter be as generous with you as you have been with us.

Outstanding information! There were things I’ve never considered before and even baits I wouldn’t have thought worthy, even while I’m expanding my horizons in the fishing world and trying new techniques and approaches. This summer, I’ve found spots full of good walleye I have passed a thousand times as nothing. The lake changed a lot this year, too, but really, I’m glad it really made me look twice at everything. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I appreciate it!

Wow! Thanks for sharing all of that info!! Moved to ND last fall and this is my first season fishing both lakes. Learned more in your video than dozens of the others I've watched combined! Haven't fished the west end of the lake yet, may definitely get in touch next spring about a guide trip!

would love you to highlight the king fishery in both bodies. When I come out I target kings. it aint easy but would like some tips as they are very different than Michigan or sea run kings out west. Great video and thanks.

Ft Peck.... in one word.... PATTERNS... Lakers move deep at this time of the year (mid May) and jigging points and down rigging deeper ridges are key; walleyes move generally in a regular pattern from shallower ends of the lake to deeper summertime structures. You have to be ready to move if you aren't seeing and forage clouds on your depth finder... smallmouth bass and pike patterns generally reflect the location at different regions of the reservoir (there is no one-size-fits-all approach) fishing patterns do differ greatly where you decide to fish. The Big Dry Arm has a mix of classic walleye and pike fishing patterns (differs from say Spring Creek and Boxelder Creek to McGuire and Nelson Creek), the Main Arm is a mix of deep almost Canadian lake like fishing from Duck Creek, the Pines, and Gilbert Creek to more traditional patterns from Sutherland and Hell Creek down to almost Forchette Creek.
