How to Get Rid of the Scarlet Lily Beetle Using Organic Control

The scarlet lily beetle is a voracious pest which can cause devastation on your ornamental lilies. However using insecticides can put beneficial insects, bees and other pollinators at risk so to avoid further collateral damage get rid of your scarlet lily beetles by using my two organic methods.

Hello, I love your video and advice. I have some lovely RJ lillies,so beautiful.I have been checking daily for our little friends only to find today some on the plant and leaves have been eaten😮 so out comes my pure liquid soap by DP made a solution and sprayed the whole plant,it is derived from vegetable oil and seems to do the trick, trouble is I can only get this liquid at a very famous super market now and they sometimes cannot get it in. Thanks for your video. 😊

@@kimmatlock7900 hello, I have responded to your enquiry weeks ago but it has gone. DP stands for dri pak,it is pure liquid soap, also know in America as dish soap.It can be used for many things like laundry, cleaning, personal care. I just make up a spray bottle full of diluted liquid and spray my lillies. The little beetles do not like it and you may have to do this more than once. Hope this helps.

I can't win with my Lillie's 😢 it's either Japanese beetles (which the birds love, I throw them in the birdbath and they eat them right up) or scarlet beetles. 😅 I am going to try sunflower oil. I was using neem oil for a little hit and it seemed to be working, but they're bad now. 😢ty for this upload!

Is there something I can do to the soil after the growing season? Should I remove the bulbs and allow them to overwinter in my basement? I have lots of these beetles and I live in Wisconsin. The excessive amounts of rain and cool temps this summer don't seem to affect them. Neem has had no affect. I have been hand picking these daily.

You used to be able to get a product called 'Soil Pest Killer ' but that has been banned in the UK for a few decades now. Personally I would use a good quality systemic insecticide and spray fortnightly at the first sind of the beetles or their damage. Stop spraying once the plants come into flower bud. Kind regards Simon

Thanks for uploading! I like your presentation style, and it's clear you have a lot of knowledge, which commands my respect. Do you have any experience with Purecrop1? It's an organic insecticide made mostly of corn oil, soybean oil, and soap. I've had great success with it for sap-sucking pests like spider mites on houseplants, and scale on my magnolia -- but I can't find any information about its efficacy against beetles. I notice the lily beetles seem to chew the leaf rather than piercing it. Do you think the Purecrop1 would be an effective treatment, like sunflower oil?

Hi Parkpatt, I am afraid I never come across this in the UK. Our range of organic insecticide tend to be pyrethrum or fatty acid based, but it has been quite a few years since i was involved with a full rage of garden centre products. Simon

@@walkingtalkinggardeners thanks. The lilies are not native where I live, so I should probably just pull them but I can't bring myself to do it. They get terribly chewed up every year and still somehow survive. I thought I would try the product I mentioned but it's somewhat expensive. If sunflower oil works in your experience, perhaps I should try that. Do you think it needs to be sunflower specifically? -Parker
