Of all the common household pests that homeowners encounter, there is probably none more damaging than termites, most notably the subterranean termite (also known as the Eastern subterranean termites). If left untreated, these termites can eat into your home which will cost a pretty penny to repair. Termite damage cost homeowners and building owners as much as $4.5 billion dollars annually in repairs, treatments and prevention.
Eastern Subterranean termites are social creatures and live in colonies where every termite has a specific role. Worker termites are cream-colored and do most of the eating and foraging for cellulose, a prime component in wood. The majority of a colony consists of worker termites. Then there are the soldier termites who are slightly bigger than workers at about ¼ inch-long. Equipped with large intimidating jaws, soldier termites main task is to protect the colony against potential intruders.
There are also alates or “swarmer” termites which are winged with their role being to produce new colonies. If you see these type of termites out and about in your home, it is a cause for concern since it’s an indication of a large infestation within your home. Finally, there are the reproductives known as the queens and kings which stay within the colony the full span of their lives.
Eastern subterranean termites are ground dwelling termites and invade homes from moist soil around and beneath structures. They basically travel from the soil to the wooden structure there they feed and create tunnels to travel and have easy access to their food source which unfortunately is your home.
Eastern Subterranean termites are known as silent destroyers because they are rarely heard and can be quietly destroying your house without detection. These termites can also be hard to get rid of without the proper guidance and products. If you have an infestation of eastern subterranean termites, action must be taken quickly. Fortunately, there is a way to eliminate the infestation yourself using our termite control products and following our expert tips.
HOW TO GET RID OF EASTERN SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES: 3 STEP SOLUTION
While experts will tell you that it’s best to seek the help of a professional when dealing with a subterranean termite infestation, this can be extremely costly. If you are willing to get your hands a little dirty and invest some time and sweat, you can eliminate an infestation yourself using the same high-quality products the professionals use, minus the exorbitant cost of labor. By following the simple steps we’ve laid out below, you can successfully wipe out the termite population that is destroying your home and put a stop to the damage.
Step 1: The best way to protect your home against termites is to treat the soil. Subterranean termites don’t actually like in the wood but rather live in the moist soil adjacent to or beneath your home. By treating the soil with a high-quality termiticide, you can wipe out an entire colony. This can be done by creating a trench around your home and pouring a termiticide mixture around your home. These can be repellent or non-repellant and work great to wipe out infestations and keep them away for period of up to 10 years.
Step 2: Once the soil has been treated, we recommend treating your foundation wood with a termiticide like Boracare to kill off any termites that are traveling and moving about in your wooded areas. After conducting a thorough inspection and finding infested areas, treat the wood with a product such as Bora-care. You can also use termite foam which works great in eliminating termites where liquid treatments cannot reach. Spray the foam in areas such as wall voids, around fireplaces, under cement slabs and under soil-filled porches.
Step 3: Repair all damaged wood and address any moisture issues within your home. Eastern subterranean termites love moisture and also love moist wood so if there are any leaks or plumbing issues, fix them immediately to aid you in preventing termites from re-infesting your home.

Thank you for the great instructional video! I have a ton of winged termites coming out of the hardwood floor in an area adjacent to a wall with mulch on the outside. I did a little digging outside, and sure enough... i found termites in the mulch. I will follow the steps you recommended. I also have traces of winged termites on the second floorand in the basement adjacent to that same wall. How do i know if the infestation isn't in the actual wall and not just the mulch outside. I only found some some termites outisde (maybe less than 50), is that a sign of the full infestation?

While I respect your knowledge of termite biology and behavior you know as well as I do a 2-gallon hand can mixed up with Taurus SC is not nearly enough product to treat a 250 linear foot home you're giving the public a false sense of security. I'm not sure if the tourist rate is 2 gallons or 4 gallons per 10 linear feet but even at the 2-gallon rate on a 200 linear foot home would require a minimum of 40 gallons also at least 50% of the time termites are entering through a plumbing penetration expansion joint for crack in the slab and you know the homeowner does not have the proper equipment to drill through the slab treated properly. Has a 30-year termite man myself in the southeast United States as I said earlier I respect your knowledge biology and behavior but this is simply giving the public a false sense of security that they can treat a Subterranean termite issue on their own
