Although you're right, truth is you'll never get chicken strips on that bike because of the way the rims stick out beyond the lip of the tire to support the spokes. The best way to get rid of chicken strips without getting hurt in case you need that extra edge for traction is by using a sanding sponge.

What gets me worried way more than other peoples' opinions is the fact that they might be more slippery than the rest of the tire. Therefore, you might lose traction when you need it the most, just because usually you don't lean that much.

Real men don’t have chicken strips! I just got rid of mine. Scraped a peg as well. And a front indicator. And a mirror. And a engine cover. And a brake lever. 😵‍💫😂

Really liking my Road 6's so far for spirited canyon and mountain riding. They are a little slower to tip-in, which is good and what I wanted. The stock Bridgestone A41's tipped-in ultra-quick and would over-turn and rotate more than desired, reducing the radius of corners when not intended. Your explanation of the effect of tire shape and profile was very good.

Lovin my 6's as well, and I got caught in sheet rain sideways and felt like I was locked in and was wondering I should just attack the corners the way I normal would in dry conditions ( didn't but felt that confident )

I have the Metzeler Tourance Next 2 fitted on my ‘18 1200GS for 10.000km/ 6000 miles now. I really like them. Had to get used how easy the tip over. Very good grip and stable feel. They’re half worn now but still feel good. In the wet no problem, very good grip and confidence.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I'd rather see chicken strips than obituaries.

I just had Road 6's fitted. They feel exactly as you described. Little uncanny at first, but after short adaptation period, I'm loving it!

I just a Harley Heritage Classic after not riding for 12 years (and only road a Honda 750 and a 96 Triumph Thunderbird for about 8 years), so I'm re-learing to ride. Watching this video, I suddenly realized you were riding the same route I go to pick my kid up from day care. I get what you are saying about the tire profile. When I had the Triumph, it was a struggle to get into corners, so I got new tires about four months after buying it (I got it in 2010ish, it only had like 2k miles on it, but the seller had no idea how old the tires were). I got more sport-bike style tires, and maneuverability increased dramatically, especially at slow speeds.

I definitely like the feel of the ‘extra’ handling on new tires. I don’t care about ‘chicken strips’, I still have them on my Goldwing after about 12,000 miles and quite a few twisty roads.

Swapped the OEM tires on my '21 GSA for the Next 2s a couple weeks ago. Absolutely amazing tire, stable, planted, good feedback. Love them.

I just bought Dunlop Q5s for my 2019 R1. I love them they also dip into the turn and are so grippy. Have a good weekend

Very interesting. I went the other way with my tyres, took the mezelers off and replaced with michelins. I found that whilst I had a couple of cm left on the tyre with the metzeler the Michelins are worn pretty much to the edge. The Michelins have a much better front in my experience but do seem to lean further for the same corner speed & radius. I always put the better grip down to being a fully road focused tyre vs an 80/20with the metzeler.

Always waiting to see what new video you make. Wouldn’t mind a “best tire” review. I’ve got the road 6’s on my SV and commute daily to work and twisties on the weekends.

I ride a vtx cruiser with dunlop elite 4's and get the same "falling over" feeling. Love it.

The subtle difference for most riders is more likely from flat to round and not round to V-shaped. I agree though, I always feel like the bike is more nimble when going from worn to new tires. Too many upright miles, not enough twisty roads.

You’re contrasting your old, worn tires to these new tires. Old tires ridden on the road are always going to be flatter as they’re worn more in the middle. Compared to a brand new tire, the new tire is going to feel a lot more easier to turn in.

I agree, it's a dumb thing to think about, but when I scrubbed the left side of mine all the way when I did gymkhana I still felt pretty awesome about it 😅

I like the v shape , I think it creates a bigger contact patch on the road when cornering vs even semi circular profile at the same tyre pressure. That might just be me.

Spot on, mate! Rather have chicken strips than scratches, dents or stiches. Kept it that way for 40 years and am not planning to change... :)

Man oh man - such epic roads - "twisties" - you have down there! I have uber fond memories of the roads North of where you were ... so up toward Idlewild, Mount Palomar and Palm Desert. I Flew from Calgary to Palm Springs last year, stayed in Cathedral City, rented a bike and did a lifetime's worth twisties in 5 days. And 'yes', the experience totally overshadowed whether or not the bike had chicken strips!

Coming from a set of Bridgestone adventure A41 to Dunlop Mutants on a R9T urban G/S, biggest difference for my is the front, rear profile, and tire carcass stiffness. Not here to argue which is better, rather bike, settings, tires are 100% rider preference.

I can not agree more and i remembered the part from 'Total Control' where it explains the tires and checked the shape of my new tires. I am a new rider (means no experience in different tires) but once i changed my tires i instantly noticed how quickly it leaned and to be hones it got me scared :) i guess i will have to get used to that feeling. I might add that i guess the previous tires (when they were new) had the same shape, but as they got old got more 'flat' in the middle. Thanks for all the tips and help man! Keep up the great work! For twisties I like V, for straight touring on interstate U, that’s why big touring bikes comes from factory with U :)

Changed the tires on my GS a few weeks ago. (16 June). From Michelin touring road tires to Dunlop 50/50. Bike felt weird at first. Around 12000k 7000 ish miles. They feel pretty good.

Also got that feeling of falling over with a new set of Pirelli Angel GT2's on my old bike. After a couple thousand km's the feeling totally disappeared

I just changed my Street triple tyres from Pirelli Diablo 3 to Metzelar M9 rr’s and I know exactly what you mean. My bike is more nimble now. And more eager to turn in. And grip the is amazing.

I'm putting a Metzler Tourance NEXT 2 Tire on the front of my bike next. 150/70 R18, and a Metzler Cruisetec 260/40 R18. Interesting to see your experience with the Tourance NEXT 2 tires. Newest tire design from Metzler for my bike, I hope it's a great one like the marketing material says lol.

I worry about mold release compound when the tires are brand new. It probably doesn’t last too long, but I take it easy for the first couple of hundred miles.

Excellent description .. very helpful. My monster 796 does not tip as much as I want it to. Find myself trying to introduce more lean mid corner. Will try the tires you just put on. Also, chicken strips (?).. I’ll leave that to Max Wrist. lol

Interesting. When I bought my 796 past year, it seemed to tip in more. I changed the tires out with the Dunlop OEM tires my Z900RS came with and it seems to be slower to tip over...I chalked it up to the additional 10lbs I added lool

I got this "V Shape Feeling" on my Sportecs M7 from Metzeler too. Amazing to ride these tires. Feels like the bike follows the road on it's own, taking you on as a passenger observing everything.

I use Bridgestone battlax S22's on my Monster 1200S. They just feel perfect for me. They give me loads of confidence on the road, Which I think is the main thing.

Awh, new tires were freaking me out. I was feeling like I was falling and I had assumed that the bike was slipping. But I never thought about the difference in the curvature of the tire when they are new.

Well just last night I took a left hand turn between 5 and 10 MPH and totally washed out my back end over a double yellow line.. Good job on the roll cage I have. BMW F850GS.

It’s one way…but as long as you’re smooth on the controls you’ll be fine.

This really depends on the Bike as well as the tire itself!!, if you are on a Supersport doing track days you can get to the edge of your tires, but that does not necessarily mean you are fast or have good lap times.

Everyone is going to feel the difference after replacing old tyres that are worn and squared off. In the 80/90s Chicken strips/ Chicken pimples that were the little spikes from the moulds that tyres had on the edges of the side tread. It's only in the 2000s that people started to think they got a hero badge if they got to the edge of the tread. How things have changed.

Know someone that tracks… you use the middle when they only use the edge, cheaper tyres for both.

So the new tires handle better than the old tires? Is it because they don't have a flat strip down the middle? Could it be because they are more rounded?? Does it feel like they are more V shaped? Like they are shaped more like a V?

I have had conflicting advise, so please add yours. Do you use the bike specs or tire specs for pressure? They are different on my bike. Thanks 😊

Tire only says max pressure, not recommended. The recommended is in the owners manual and usually on the bike somewhere too. That's a good starting point.

Two things with new tyres: 1. They're still perfectly round. That reduces your upright contact patch, but also offers no resistance to lean, unlike having a touring flat spot, which essentially acts as a stabilising influence - the back of the bike has to come up a bit to overcome it, so gravity keeps you upright. 2. They're a bit slipperier. Because they're not fully cured yet. A few heat cycles take care of that one in short order. I don't think that one is particularly noticeable actually, not compared to the flat spot. Especially at higher speeds, where you're never really statically loading the tyre (i.e. it spins faster than you twist it).

One of my favorite roads in So Cal has three bee farms. I have ridden through swarms so big that I could not even clean my visor with the water and paper towels I usually carry. I have been so covered in pollen it took twenty minutes to clean my jacket with leather cleaner. In thirty-seven years of riding of have been stung in the neck no less than a dozen times. It is getting so sometimes I don't feel it anymore.

I rode thru a valley of bugs like that once, riding by the river at dusk on an Alabama summer.

Newer tires will have a taller crown to them. That being said some of the feel might also be placebo effect.

Hey bro! What do you think about most manufacturers drench their tires in silicone and you gotta ride like 100 miles before the silicone is driven out and you get better traction. I myself notice a huge differens but you go into twisties right after tyre change??

Always had, and still have chicken strips on my tires....other peoples opinion is for me irrelevant in this perpective. But it means that there is potential on the tire that I have not used with my bike.....a few weeks ago I was on a 5 h lean angle training with instructor on a dedicated track, got from max 34 degree leanangle left and right to 42....chicken strips went from 4-5cm to 1 cm... in normal situation in traffic I drive like before, but I know I can go deeper if necessary....which means more control....I'm already signed up for the next course. 5h training I learned more about the bike and myself than in 1 year driving , I recommend it to everybody

Always felt the metzeler very stable and confident tyre but not much feedback not felt the v shape but that could be that type i have tried the sportier side

Is there a difference at high speed stability in Straight line Riding?

What brand of earplugs do you use? I have been having a miserable time finding some that are helmet friendly, have decent sound quality, and have good noise reduction.

Within series the difference exists too ... My new Bridgestone BT31's felt/were? more rounded then the BT32's I now ride .. And yes after a couple of hundreds of miles the tire ended up feeling the same familiar way as the BT31s

I'm no Isaac Newton, but I read bikes with narrower tires don't have to lean as much to corner. I ride 400cc bikes with narrow tires compared to a 600 or 1000

True on motorbikes and mountain bikes

The tyre deforms with load. Air pressure resists that deformation. If your tyres feel too "v-shaped" for your taste, drop a bit of pressure. Just a bit. 1-2psi increments. If you want them to feel more "v-shaped", add some pressure. Make sure not to exceed the manufacturers' limits.

Kind of surprised how little miles you got out of the road 6. I got about 9k out of the road 5 on my r1 and they were still round and had life in them. Is this a heavy bike? I wonder if that contributes.

10000km for a set of tyres? Wow, i usually change them after 20000km (+-12000 miles) and they still don't feel too used to me. Probably you "use"them more than i do

Most people don't seem to realise that the feeling of your bike not tipping in easily is due to low tire pressure. New tires feel great because the shop brings the tires up to spec as well :-) Get your tires up to spec and you'll be amazed

I have no chicken strips on my tires, but i still cant drag knee. In my head i already put myself far out on the bike, but still cant touch the ground, its weird. I have a 1997 thundercat by the way. I tried all kinds of tires. The diablo rosso 2 has a bigger curve and it took some time getting rid of the chicken strips, but still couldnt drag knee. It is not that big of a deal to me, but i just wanted to know what it feels like to drag knee

The point of getting your knee down is to take lean off the bike. If you're wearing the edge of the tyre and trying to lean further to get your knee down then stop immediately because you're going to hurt yourself. Have somebody follow you with a camera or film you cornering and look at your body position chances are you aren't hanging off like you think you are. Then work on your body position and once you get it right your knee will be dragging long before you scrub the edge of the tyre. 😊

The ones who ride fast are very few and the mostly older dudes. Im waiting on my brother to have his licence so he can ride with me and we can both give feedback to eachother. Either have a friend film you in a corner you know and can lean over or set a camera up and film yourself. Do the same corner 2 or 3 times and you'll start to see what your body position is really like. Don't be embarrassed when you see it though! I had a friend film a ride I went on and I was convinced I was pretty much scraping my panniers a few times while we were out, watched it back and the bike was pretty much upright. The point is, how you perceive it in your mind isn't always how it is. Just make sure you're safe before you go chasing the speed :) Boa noite from England.

Wait what, Road 6 did you 6600 miles? I bought the exact same ridiculously expensive tires because the claims and quite a few comments all over the place spoke of '20 000 km ( ~12,500 miles ) is not unheard of'. Then they would be somewhat OK for value I thought. You got half of what I expected out of them. If true, that's 350€ basically down the drain, 200€ tires can do the 10 000 km just as well. I'm at 2000 km with them right now, rather unhappy with your findings. The tire itself feels good, though.

The phrase chicks strips is bs but I don’t totally agree with you. Marc Marquez lean angle was 68 degrees and he’s won 8 world moto gp titles obviously he’s on a track but there’s nothing wrong with leaning the bike , also the whole point is to get the corner over and done asap to get back on the Fat part of the Tyre 👍🏾

Cornering is the whole point,its where all the fun is unless u just like riding in a straight line all day.

Going from a set of tires that are squared off to even round profile tires will make them feel like they are v-shaped.

The only reason i can think off when counter leaning as an advantage is that you have more line of sight, because you are more upright

There isn't an advantage...you don't counter lean at higher speeds...low speed MotoJitsu drills? Sure. Taking a corner at a stop light under 20mph? Sure. High speed cornering? No.

I have a question. Why are many so worried about the Stipe it's just a un used part of the tyre who cares that you didn't lean down enough you should be more concerned about avoiding accidents with so many distracted drivers. I have over 50yrs of riding and only one accident under my belt my driving experience and training came from the government and I used that for off road and Transition to street we didn't worry about a piece of unused rubber. Focus on what's important and living for the next ride. 🙏

There's no need to ask me about professional racers on race bikes with slicks on tracks vs a street bike with street tires on the street...they're no where near the same. This video is of me riding brand new tires directly the in twisty roads immediately. All you need to do is don't add too much lean or too much throttle or too much brake too soon. Start easy and gradually add all of it.

Little late to this video, but question that pops in my mind is: why would you? I don't care if people think I'm a chicken rider. I ride my ride, you ride yours.

Then they proceeded to tell me how many motorcycles they wrecked, how many reconstructive surgeries they had, and they can't ride anymore as it's too painful....... Most people who get obsessed with getting rid of chicken strips are probably counter balancing at speed and can't corner properly. Their time on this mortal plane is ticking.

If you are so worried about so called chicken strips than take your bike to a track day. I guarantee that after about 20 laps your chicken strips will start to disappear. That will also change your riding style on the road ,especially on your favorite windy sections of road.
