How to get paid to travel and perform

Ойын-сауық

I'm sure that I'm missing SO many other performing contracts around the world but that just shows how many more jobs are out there than you might think.
Definitely not a pro or expert on this topic, this is just my understanding of the industry at the moment. It's what I would tell you if you asked me in person :)

Hello Hannah! We are doing the same job, my dear! Well, I am a pianist-singer working basically in hotel lobbies or piano bars and piano restaurants! The reality you are describing is exactly as you describe it! I have stayed unemployed maximum for 6 months searching for the next contract, cause many times you won't be the right fit for any job and that's the point you shouldn't give up and just keep hustling and applying! Music has taken me to Greece, Bulgaria, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Japan and now China, Shanghai, where I am currently performing as a pianist! All those experience have been amazing and precious to me! But...the road of this lifestyle has a lot of loneliness...it's almost impossible to keep a stable relationship, you always miss your friend and relatives and their best moments. You are always ''out of the game'' in a country far away alone. But, I would never complain and since this is my choice it means that I prefer the positive aspect of this whole situation! I love travelling and being able to travel and perform is a blessing for me! I would be interested in applying for Universal Studios in Japan or Singapore, or even in Disneyland Shanghai, where I am currently, in order to stay more in Shanghai, because it is an awesome city! If you have never performed here in Shanghai, I would strongly recommend you do so and you will not regret it. Great job with your videos! I subscribed to you since the time I was also in Japan, on a hotel on Lake Biwa, where I was performing for a 3-month contract! I love your videos, your content and your personality! Many kisses from China!

This is so impressive. What a creative way to travel the world and make a living. Your pictures of your characters are really amazing. You are living the dream. Most people don't have the courage or talent to do what you do. It's impressive how independent you are. Congratulations

I really enjoy your videos, especially when you lived in Japan, because you give your audience a feel of what it's like to live in those cultures. And you have a friendly, appreciative attitude, that some of the other expat bloggers don't. I've seen other western women's travel videos and it is all about their vanity, not their locale. Boring. Keep up the good work. I live in Asia and I was fascinated by how different Japan is than the west. Singapore, less so. Cheers.

Oh my! This is a very useful information given about working as a performer. The money given to use to eat and other incidentals is called a per diem. What’s been most beneficial to you now than when I was looking for work as a performer are more venues to work at that didn’t exist back then. Technology has been especially helpful in searching out available jobs globally, because of the internet. The portable video production company you have to produce your own reel of your job history. And yeah here in the US you would never get a contract like the ones your talking about, because your providing your own housing accommodations, transportation to and from the park for rehearsals and shows. But you have opportunities to move within the park as other job openings become available to extend you employment at a park like Disneyland. Well unless you’re a headliner. Just don’t take it for granted, but know you’ve been blessed with the qualities and traits that are most sought after as a performer at these venues and parks. Oh the mentality that performers have is quite different from the typical employee at a job, because those people who have time off from work call it a vacation. Where as performers like yourself call it unemployment while you’re between jobs. Oh back in the last century you looked in the Drama Logue or Variety publications for auditions. But if you had an agent and had your SAG card you got a call from your agent to union jobs auditions ahead of everyone else, if it was publicized at all. However that may have changed by now. So your opportunities are vastly improved from when I was performing. Enjoy it while you can.

Addendum: another reason for failing at an audition at a Disneyland parks for face character roles has to do more with your physical attributes than one abilities. Snow White needs a fair complected female with blue or green eye, Mary Poppins has to be thin and tall around 5’ 10”. The little mermaid has to be able to wear a red wig complementing skin tone, and so on. But another consideration is the person has to fit into the existing costumes that have been made for the character long before you ever thought of putting on any tap or ballet slippers. So your body has to match what the already have in stock. Well unless they’re adding a brand new character to their show then whoever gets to be the first to portray the character becomes the template for those who follow. Auditions for any Disney show brings out at least 50+ females to every single male that is in attendance. Fun times! If females are the focus then tall weak males performers are taken, but if the males are who have to be the strongest technique in dancing then any male with those qualities with make the show,. Women are in plentiful supply. These are somethings that I remember from those days of struggling to make to the end. But as I stated before opportunities weren’t as plentiful as they are today, but what I can see is the talent level is a much more accomplished and polished performer than I’ve ever seen in the last century.

Yeah I've heard that 20th Century Fox World will maybe start employing entertainers for a few years now haha. Who knows if/when it will start... As a general rule though, I don't particular want to work for a company in it's first year of being open as it's usually very messy and disorganised. After a few years of running things they usually get it together.

  • @CurrentlyHannah

+joel chan Depends on the company, the show, the director and how many other positions are available. In the normal world employers aren't allowed to discriminate based on a number of factors but in the performing arts world, they are. I could potentially not get a job due to my height, weight, race, sex, eye colour or whether or not I have tattoos and the same applies for a non-white performer, but again, it depends on the job they're auditioning for.
