How to “Get Off the Tools”

In this video, I discuss my journey from building apprentice to running a multi-million dollar company. I'll talk about how I've guided other builders in my company into project management roles and stick around to the end of the video where I'll give you a book recommendation to help you on your journey off the tools. Great video. I’be been working as a site manager after being a builder for a number of years. Biggest learning point for me was, having those under me working at 100% even if it felt I wasn’t, as I was busy in the background with my toolbelt of organising things for the upcoming days and weeks. Just because I don’t have a toolbelt on does not make me productive. It makes me more productive if I’m able to keep others working effectively

Some good tips there mate. Best thing I ever learnt to do was starting to let go and delegate tasks. There’s so much on your plate running a building company so delegating and trusting your staff is key.

Great tips Josh, bring open to growth is key for sure, it seems that personality type has a lot to do with the ability to go out self employed or running a small business. Goal setting and proactive (not reactive) mindsets are key! I wrote a business purpose statement which I got out each time employing someone and helped me remember what I’m all about!

Hey Josh honestly love your content I have been watching you religiously for the past couple months. My name is Abdullah, I'm 20 years old and I really have fell in love with the construction industry, at this point in my life I am kind of stuck not knowing the most efficient way to get into the construction industry. my goal is to one day be in a position like yours but I am stuck between going to school and getting a 4 year bachelors in construction management or simply going straight to work learn the trades and slowly start to do my own work. I guess my question would be if you wanted to get to where you are now at my age how would you have done it and what steps would you have taken. Thank you very much and I really appreciate your content :)

Mate, I started my carpentry apprenticeship last year (mature age) and this year I was offered to simultaneously start my builders apprenticeship so I can finish both at the same time (cp 3yrs build 2yrs). Do you think is a good move? Would love to hear your opinion. Cheers

Im a sole trader roofer and I just want people to give me roofs to do so I can do it alone and go home. I think its a very small margin to work with to source work before I have to scale up but I dont want to
