How to get more readers on WEBTOON for your webcomic

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here are four tips for growing your webcomic audience and increasing your subscriber count on LINE Webtoon (or "Webtoons" as most of us call it). This focuses on the Webtoon Canvas section.

This is my first attempt at this kind of instructional video. I hope you like it. I learned a lot in the process and I hope to address things like the too-many jump-cuts and not looking directly at the camera. Like webcomics, the next one is always better. :)
Thanks again for watching - and for reading this stuff! :)

Thanks so much! I've been doing The Middle Age for four years and I'm still trepidatious as I hit the 'publish' button. I think, if we really pour our hearts into these, it's only natural that we're concerned about how each episode is received. Just remember that most readers are rooting for us. They want us to do well. Jerks will be jerks and we're not creating webcomics for them. :)

The one who fetishize are the viewers who are more likely straight. I'm not homophobic but its literally how it is. For help with posting often, I highly recommend not posting your webtoon episodes right after you finish them and save a few episodes for buffers! I know it's tempting to upload right when the episode is completed but save a few! It's nice to have a few episodes completed so you can schedule them for steady upload schedule, and even to have some ready for weeks when you get busy and can't finish comic work as easily. When I was a Canvas creator, I had an unsteady freelance work schedule outside of my comic so I'd make batches of 5 episodes and then post when I finished the 5th one. Then I'd get to working on the next 5 while not having to worry about uploading. I'm currently an Original creator and I have a 10-13 week buffer in case something ever happens so I'm not scrambling or needing to go on hiatus to catch up. Find what works with your life but having a few saved will help keep a steady upload schedule!

Another recommendation regarding Genre (which I didn't have time to mention because I felt the video was already getting a bit too long), is that you should consider including at least one of the main Genres (Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Slice of Life, Sci-Fi, Drama, Action, or Superhero). The two Genres you've selected (Animals and Heartwarming) are initially hidden from view under "Others.' If you choose, say, Comedy and Animals, you'll get in front of a lot more people. Definitely something I'd suggest trying.

This was a great video. You gave advice that I hadn't heard before (I was not expecting that.) I'm totally going to try changing the upload time for my webtoon. I've been consistent in up loading every week on the same day and about the same time, but I'd like to experiment now. I went over to your webtoon to check it out. I love it! Very funny! I subscribed and gave it a 10 star. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this video.

The last tip about 'posting often' really gave me food for thought. How you were saying with the 'long scrolls', that's something I really liked about webtoons and wanted to incorporate myself. So i do have really long episodes that I post weekly, but they take so much time that I've gradually ran out of buffer. In between chapters I'm able to catch back up, but the chapters themselves are gonna start getting longer as well. I might be able to make them shorter but post twice a week rather than the once? Idk, I'm just commenting my thoughts. If you had feedback that would be helpful, the comic itself is called Dark Zone (drama/sci-fi): www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/dark-zone/list?title_no=483773

Great editing and the format of the video was very easy to follow. I honestly didn't think I'd want to watch the whole thing due to my own short attention span and the fact that it was longer than ten minutes, but you kept it interesting and to the point. Helpful tips too- I hadn't heard these before so I learned some new things. Thanks for sharing :) Edit: Also, I just thought of a question. Not sure if you'll see this, but if you do, do you think it's necessary to already have an audience before airing your first episode? Or, do you have any advice about using social media to advertise your comic? I had no social media or any kind of online presence four months ago, but made an account on Instagram recently because I heard that it's very difficult to gain readers without that.

Thanks so much, Dreaming Blue! As for your questions, I'm planning to address those very questions at length in a future video but, quickly, I'd say that social media *can* help but it's not as helpful as it once was and losing effectiveness every day. Brian, I started graphing how long each post appeared on each Genre front page and found that I could, after it dropped off the Comedy front page, switch the comic's genres to a less popular genre and the comic would instantly appear in reverse-chronological order in the new Genre section. In the end, I don't think it would result in more readers since Genre is really about reader expectations - likely the subject of another video.
