Let's fix the title. HOW TO USE THE FREE VERSION OF OFFICE 365

So With Microsoft 365 basic there are desktop versions but I’d like to know if there’s an exception to Teams as it’s not stated clearly...the desktop app is very important... thanks for your replies

With your document / spread sheet being on line is there a risk of some one in Microsoft being able to access the file and misuse it

What people don't understand is while free. You don't get the desktop app for free and the online apps are as up to date as the desktop apps, so some of the features might not be available or refined like the desktop apps.

The drawback that I experienced recently was when I had to edit a Statistics Question paper on the web (Online Word). I wasn't able to edit because everything that I had previously typed in desktop word was seen as a messed up document on Word Online version. So this may be useful for simple text only documents. But if you use any extra feature, like math formula in my case, then office online is a poor substitute.

Did u try viewing it in reading view? It might help but World Online doesnt have capabillities like Desktop version u got installed on your PC sadly and it might remain like that if u ask me

I think I was accessing the web version of Excel through my Microsoft account, but it required me to upload my document to OneDrive. Is that what's going on here when you say it's uploaded to the web? How secure are these files? I don't want them on OneDrive. Also it created several versions of my document by adding 1, 2, 3 at the end of the file name so how do I know which is the most recent version to download to my computer again? Thanks for being here for us computer dummies! My hard drive crashed and I'm so bummed that my Office programs died with it.

This is a bit deceptive... you are showing how to access the web-based apps NOT to get the locally installed applications which are part of the Microsoft 365 subscription, which to me was what I thought the title was going to tell me how to do. Better title would be "How to use the Microsoft 365 Web-Apps for Free. And how they have most of the features of basic functions of the paid desktop apps. Their functionality is also much slower than the desktop app. What am I 'getting' or receiving by what you show... nothing. You are showing how to access a website. It should also state that it uses the OneDrive for storing the documents, and that is the only place the web-apps can access directly.

I have problems with Microsoft updating. My laptop comes to a halt and the updates don't happen, so I often have to stop updates for a week. I also have problems with One Drive. REPLY FROM MICROSOFT: The message "Not actively using on any device yet", means that you have not installed or used Microsoft 365 on any of your devices. It will still show this message even if you can already see files in OneDrive, as it indicates the Microsoft 365 service. We hope that clears everything. No it does not clear everything! MS Office is a Great Suite. But I missed the amazing and essential features to be available for at least in Enterprise Editions. 1) Built-in Functionality for Content Control mapping and Management 2) A translate function to auto translate a text set to a variable in the document. 3) For Form Generations, If a Person is changed from Male to Female, All related Pronouns should be linked and auto convert. 4) A Proper And Efficient Way to Manage and Edit Different Sections and their properties. Suggestion is to at least in Navigation task pane.

@@jacobstar2631 Max [male] is nice. He is doing his work. Get gets himself better every day due to gym. I'm asking a mapping tool that links he,his, himself to the gender of name Max. When I just change Max to Alina and set it's gender as female, He, his, himself should automatically be Changed to she, her, herself. By the way I found a macros enabled extension that works the same.

You get the core functionality with the free tier. Paid tiers give you much more OneDrive storage space, AI design functionality, no ads in email, etc. for many, free is good enough.

The BIG downside of this so-called "free" version is SECURITY. I strongly advise: do not used this Internet-based version of Microsoft Office for "propriety" documents that should not be seen or read by third parties. In basic words, if the contents of your documents contain information that should not be seen or read by Microsoft or by law enforcement agencies, a standalone Microsoft product provides a much higher level of security. °°

If you are already paying subscription features are much more, including storage. The minimum storage in subscription models is 1tb while in free is only some GBs

You'd go onto ordinary Google search and, if it was your birthday, they would play you a little jingle and put up a banner. Given that my online birthday is not my real one, this annoyed me considerably. I have a background in this field and, believe me, if I had an afternoon to spare, I would be able to tell you details about yourself that would shock you. Bury your head in the sand if you want!

Hate to tell you this but if you are OK with an online Office suite, Google's is much faster than Microsoft's. Online-only Office 365 is functionally limited and sluggish to boot. If your internet connection is not super reliable at all times, you will find run into weird behavior issues. I don't know why Microsoft is obsessed with everything online. Microsoft is known for selling offline applications, so stay with your strength and re-price the home version.

@@Zetler You haven't used Google Workspace extensively. For offline type usage, MS Office is the king. For online collaborative work, Google Workspace sort of invented that space, and they are still ahead of Office 365. I use both everyday and collaborative work is much much more seamless with Google Workspace. Microsoft still can't figure out how to get OneDrive and Sharepoint to play nice with each other. Oh gosh, dont get me started with my Microsoft rant. I am on the road a lot for my job, Google Workspace is clearly a winner...and guest what? I grew up with Windows and Office and work as a developer in that ecosystem as well.
