Is John Mayer bringing Sob Rock back? Was he really using a Soldano amp in his latest "Last Train Home" music video? Was Tomo Fujita right that you only need 2 pedals to create John Mayer's sound? Well... The Captain & Danish Pete attempt to answer all of these questions with a collection of chorus pedals, Klon-style overdrives, and of course a PRS Silver Sky.
How close will they get to John's Live Jimmy Kimmel guitar tone? Let's find out!

A bit bittersweet how much exposure tracks like these get right out the gate. Seems like anything relatively upbeat on the contemporary side gets thoroughly depleted due to how rare it is. Reminds me of when that Pharell Williams (sp?) track "Happy" came out and it got wore out by appearing everywhere all at once. At least with this song, I've heard it a hundred times already and still like it.

The tone on Kimmel is very different from the studio tone. I'm pretty confident that the studio tone IS a Soldano and might even be John's EC Grey Clapton Strat as well. I think what we saw on Kimmel was his latest iteration of live rig. There's a thickness and sustain to the studio tone that wasn't there on Kimmel.

It also has Methane's patented chorus sound, although as an example of chorus I'd go with Jaco. But if they want to go back to the 80s and get chorus rock sound, there are better choices, like Boston's Tom Sholz on "More Than A Feeling" or if you want something more jazz, the Crusaders "Carnival of the Night" with Barry Finnerty on guitar, that has subtle chorus/flange. Or maybe Carlos Rios on Gino Vanelli's Sally. Or how about the Yellowjackets Elamar with Mike Miller. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6mpystrZ9O-qco.html all with chorus-like solos. No offense to John Mayer. As pop recording artists go, he's a damn good guitar player, but the 1980s were filled with great guitarists, and people liked hearing guitar solos - a match made in heave. Don't sell people short, just have them listen to the real thing.

Lee's tone at the end was so nice! Been fun to watch his playing improve over the years too... Great job Lee! Awesome video guys. Making me miss my old Japanese CE-2, but my Walrus Audio Julianna has all my chorus needs covered. I was born in the 80's so I never got to play chorus while it was in style. It hasn't stopped me from almost always having one on my board, but I love that John is making it popular again.

In my opinion, 23:03 thats it!!! For me the magic part is: simple song requires a simple sound and a simple solo. The most simple answer is most probably the correct one, so yeh I can dig that JM might have used a Clapton mid boost, Saldano and CE-2 because thats what Clapton used. I hope that JM never tells us because the mystery makes the song even more special :)

As I said on another video and you also mentioned John got some inspiration from Clapton's Journeyman album. Especially "No Alibis and Breaking Point". Similar take on the use of the 80's DX7 type rhythm backing. Sounds to me like possibly an auto-wah or wah with a flanger/vibe.

As soon as I saw the official video, I said "Clapton Soldano tone and licks for days." Then, I saw the SLO in the background.
