How to get into UNSW Medicine: Medical Science & Lateral Entry

Medical Science has often been mentioned as a backup option and pathway into a Medicine degree. However, there's not much information on this. This video sheds insight into what UNSW Medsci is actually like from the perspective of 4 Medsci students who got into UNSW Medicine via the Lateral Entry Scheme. We cover the Medsci degree, job opportunities, regrets and whether they'd recommend Medsci as a pathway into Medicine.

disclaimer: this video is in no way an attempt to disparage the medical science degree, but aims to offer some inside perspective on what this degree was like. all statements were taken directly unless stated otherwise from 4 unsw lateral entry students (ie medical science students who got into unsw medicine). this is a very small sample size so of course, many others may disagree. that is fine, i'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments if you have anything to say :))
Take care!

    a statistic if you guys were interested: a person who got into lateral entry had 77 WAM and 95 UCAT. so don't count yourself out if your WAM may be on the "lower" end. grind out some UCAT study

    Hey there! Thank you for all the info! Gave me a bit of hope ahaha! Might have a chance of scoring an interview this year so any interview tips would be great! Just to clarify, you said the interview was one-on-one but grouped in 5, does that mean those 5 people go in one by one? And in terms of "modified", was it still a panel interview with an emphasis on life experiences?

  • @rahulprabhu1255

    For each session there’s 5 interviews happening at the same time. For the interview itself, it’s a standard UNSW panel interview so I’d recommend checking out Thy’s interviews tips video for useful advice!

    @@rahulprabhu1255 Precisely what I was looking for! Just to confirm, the interview structure is pretty much as expected for the normal pathway, only minor tweaks in questions (possibly more appropriate for graduate entry than under, if that's a thing)? Also, can I add you on social media? I'll confirm it's me if you accept my request.

    At the beginning I was looking forward to start my medsci degree but after watching this video, I am not very sure knowing of the very little job opportunities. I was wondering if I do medsci but don't end up getting into medicine through the lateral pathway or the GMSAT postgraduate pathway, is i possible to undergo a masters study in diagnostic radiography for example if I fit the requirements and work in that field? Like if that possible to further study masters in another area of study as long as I fit the criteria?

    hi Moutia, my apologies, i honestly dont know the answer to your question - but you can ask unsw via the live chat function or the 2 websites below: www.unsw.edu.au/study/help/contact-us#askaquestion or portal.insight.unsw.edu.au/contact-us/ additionally, you can study diagnostic radiography as your undergrad www.sydney.edu.au/courses/courses/uc/bachelor-of-applied-science-diagnostic-radiography.html or www.newcastle.edu.au/degrees/bachelor-of-medical-radiation-science-honours-diagnostic-radiography hope that helps

    Would I be able to transfer from uts advanced science premed (after 1st year) into med sci and apply for lateral entry into medicine? Does this still take into account atar? Or do you think it would be better to completer uts advanced science and say apply to usyd post grad med? (Less years in comparison to post grad med at unsw) Thank you!

  • @hellothysworld

    @hellothysworld

    Жыл бұрын

    hi Ella honestly im not sure if theres a transfer option from uts adv sci premed into unsw medsci, havent heard of that before unsw lateral entry from medsci into medicine DOES NOT take ATAR into account. yes, postgrad entry is an option but you will need to do GAMSAT (not UCAT) for most of them, which i heard is a very tough exam. unis include: usyd, anu, deakin, griffith, umelb, notre dame etc. another pathway to consider is non-standard entry. so you can continue doing your uts degree, get a high gpa, sit UCAT and apply to unis. the unis offering nonstandard entry are: unsw, wsu, jmp, jcu in summary, here are your options 1) finish uts degree and apply postgrad med which has other requirements eg gamsat, portfolio 2) do well in your uts degree 2nd year, sit ucat and apply non-standard entry 3) do unsw medsci degree and apply for lateral entry all options have their pros and cons, so have a good think and ask around please double check what i have said as i may be incorrect. i highly recommend you to email UNSW student services for definite clarification!

    @@hellothysworld Your post is extremely helpful so thank you so much!! Does non standard entry at unsw mean you complete a full bachelors degree and then apply for the undergrad 6 year degree? (Therefore total of 9 years?) I’m hoping to get into unsw medical science and from there try lateral entry, if not I think completing the uts degree and then attempting post grad at another uni + sitting the gamsat would be my best option as it would be a total of 7 years rather than non standard entry at unsw which would be 9. Again, thank you for all your help :)

  • @hellothysworld

    @hellothysworld

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Ella-nj7my no, non-standard entry means you aren't a schoolleaver or applying for postgrad entry. so you dont have to complete your degree, you can apply in 2023 for 2024 intake but must take UCAT. if you get in then that'll be 6 years. i'm not too well-versed on non-standard entry so feel free to email unsw asking for clarification lateral entry via unsw medsci is very difficult to get into for reasons explained in this video but if you do get in then it'll be 6 years yes postgrad would be 7 years (uts degree + postgrad med) no worries, let me know if you have any other questions!

  • @Ella-nj7my

    @Ella-nj7my

    @@hellothysworld thank you! Yes I did ask on live chat about non standard entry but they unfortunately also need you to have an atar of 96 or above + a satisfactory performance in the ucat and tertiary first year marks. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on what degree’s you think would be good for undergrad before pursuing post grad med? Would medical science at unsw still be worthwhile even if I do not get lateral entry? Or could the bachelor of advanced science premed from uts be better as less people do it? Thank you so much :)

  • @hellothysworld

    @hellothysworld

    @@Ella-nj7my yes you need minimum 96 ATAR for non-standard entry into unsw. however other unis also offer nonstandard entry eg wsu, jmp, jcu - the atar limit should be lower for these unis, so have a look at these unis as well. in terms of recommended degrees, honestly not too sure about this, id encourage you to seek out medstudentsonline - fantastic website with good advice. i have heard that gamsat is a pretty hard exam (3 sections) so i think having a strong basis in the sciences is needed. i think you can do any degree; people of all degrees can do postgrad med eg nursing, physio, engineering etc i would say main things to consider are 1) what degrees may help with the skills required to do well on gamsat and 2) in the case that you dont get into med, what 'backup' careers do you want? med sci at unsw is good if you are interested in medical research as a career (in the case that you are unsucessful for medicine) but if not then i'd steer away. hope that helps!

    🐻 This totally! Why do Lateral Entry when you can do any other degree that can have better job prospects and can be a lot more fun/enjoyable? Plus you can literally still apply to med haha Also, yeah, I personally don’t think I could ever deal with a snakey environment so I’m just happy with my Comp Sci degree atm! In fact I’m having so much fun that I am having second thoughts about medicine... In fact, I think you’ll get lots of better marks that way!

    interesting perspective, lovely to hear from you again! exactly, i wanted to post this vid bc people might not be aware that lateral entry + getting into med from medsci is not necessarily as 'easy' as marketers may make it seem... hope compsci goes well for you :)) -just clarifying for those who might be reading the comments and not watching the whole video - medsci is not inherently snakey or non-snakey/toxic/cutthroat. people have had varied experiences, some have liked whilst others have disliked the environment!
