How to get healthy without dieting | Darya Rose | TEDxSalem
Darya discusses how psychology impacts our ability to create healthy eating habits. Darya is a neuroscientist, author and popular blogger who has trained her sights and talents on solving the age-old problem of eating healthy and losing weight.
Her holistic approach to food and health is a breath of fresh air compared to the stuffy supermarket shelves of diet shakes and appetite suppressants.
After receiving her BA in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley, Darya received her PhD from UC San Francisco and writes about food, health and weight loss. Her website ‘Summer Tomato’ was one of TIME’s top 50 websites in 2011 and if social media is any indicator, her message that “life should be awesome” is reaching far and wide.
Darya describes herself as a “foodist”, which is a term for someone who has abandoned dieting to enjoy life using real food and also the name of her book - Foodist: Using Real Food and Real Science to Lose Weight Without Dieting.
Interpretation for TEDxSalem VI (2019) was provided by student interns through a collaboration between Western Oregon University, TEDxSalem, and the Deaf and interpreting communities of Oregon. The volunteer student interpreters were supported by volunteer, certified interpreters in order to minimize potential errors. “I adored all these things, they brought me joy and fulfillment. My healthy habits were now an expression of self love rather than self hatred.” As soon as I heard her say these words.. I couldn’t help myself but to tear up. it’s such a beautiful rewarding feeling to finally be at peace with yourself, your thoughts, and food.

1- The new habits you want to create need to be intrinsically enjoyable. 2- Cultivate awareness around your thoughts, actions and emotions(buzzword- mindfulness). 3- Develop a growth mindset. What work,What didn't work,What to do differently to make it work next time. These questions can change your mindset from 'fixed' to 'growth'.

Thank you for the Sign Language intepreter. Wish this was a more universal requirement, even in TED alone. Accessibility needs to catch up to the times.
I started cooking healthy recipes and it's so much fun! I've made awesome salads and I seriously look forward to cooking everyday now...😢
i think this is the best advice related to eating that i’ve ever heard. i’ve struggled with my relationship with food since i was 13 and i’m trying so hard to change that. this video helps so much!!
You are still awesome Darya. Thank you for your encouragement!
Thank you so so much for this talk! I think this is the talk that is going to change my eating habits for the better and put my unhealthy thoughts about dieting that I have been having for the past one year. Thank you!
awesome info! i have always love eating and that made me lose weight super hard, tried a lot of diets and exercises along with it, but what made it possible was agoge diet. it changed my life. its always about the right diet for u
I really enjoyed this Ted talk, I intend to watch several more times and take notes! So much rings true for me. Thank you. I just shared amongst my friends of all ages because it’s something we all express frustration about.

I eat almost 100% whole foods, avoid most times oil, refined sugar, added salt with a few exceptions. And for the first time in my life I don't need to pay attention to my portions in order to not gain weight. I eat in abundance without checking the calories, even when I exceed them I don't gain weight anymore 😊

Powerful START- cant wait to hear more of you! :)
So glad to see an Interpreter!! Unfortunately, it is not the norm!
You are true Role Model. Suggested approach is realistic n doable. Hats off👍
I have tried this several times. The only thing is I related to it most of the time as a diet. There was one time I actually related to this as only habits and it was successful until I thought I had to get leaner and more fit (I already looked good!) and went on a diet. A very strict one. It only lasted a week. I haven't been able to get back into that mindset, and it's been a year and a half. 😔
I was looking for dietary motivation, but this is so much more. SO SO much more. Thank You
Love this ❤️❤️
Missteps are part of the learning process. Not only do setbacks not define you, they are opportunities to grow and learn more about how you and the world work. Rather than focusing on what didn't work out for you or what's impossible to change, someone with a growth mindset always stays focused on what's workable. They focus their attention on the action or the things they can control to get a different outcome next time. To cultivate this mindset in yourself - ask yourself 3 questions.1. What works 2. What didn't work 3. What can I do differently next time. This great talk seems underappreciated.
Good ted and excellent
One of the most informative TED talks I've seen! Mindfulness, habit building, mindsets and weight loss condensed in 14 minutes - definitely one of my favourites 👏
I didn’t think I liked to run because my legs would hurt afterwards and not in a good way. So I bought myself an iPod and I started running with one song then walking for the next and so on. I like it much better now also while knowing I’m using different muscles by interchanging the activities. Now I’m doing 5k almost everyday. That’s a goal I’ve set myself and when I become strong I will keep increasing the distance 😉

It's not easy. You need to experiment. I see it like cracking open a safe. You need to test different foods and strategies (or fitness activities). When you find one that is a) manageable b) enjoyable and c) effective then bingo! You have opened one of the numbers on the safe. (not all of them - just one) The thing is what works for me won't work for you. That's why diets don't work - everyone has their own secret combination. Have fun experimenting and I hope you find something that works for you!
Brilliant

True! I can eat what I want and stay a size 6. Thing is: I love pasta and eat it often enough but I don't want to eat chips, nor do I want to go out to eat every day. I don't like sweets either. Yes, this is so true. I love how in your example you're sharing healthy foods to stay balanced around. There is no inherently wrong way to keep balanced (it is all based on your belief system and what you think is right or wrong) but many think, " Oh, if I eat this salad, then I can have this piece of oreo cheesecake. And while I don't think this should necessarily be discouraged I do wonder "what if we raised our standards a bit and focused more on nutritionally sound foods as a way to stay balanced instead of nutritionally deficient ones"? But it is VERY hard and I do acknowledge that.
Why is she looking so much like Courtney Cox???😘

Honestly guys cut out caffeine and sugar and see how your body changes. It’s incredible....I mean you can still keep your sugary drinks but cut out any food that has sugar including fruit and after a couple of months or so you reinclude it after sometime.

She uses the phrase “being heavier” but I don’t think she was being phobic, she was simply talking about the people who are obese and still remain the same weight while on fad diets. This Ted Talk is speaking out against dieting and that having a healthy lifestyle is more important than simply trying to lose weight.
