How to get from Paris to Le Havre by Train for a Cruise or Whatever.

Музыка

We recently did a cruise that required taking a train from Paris to Le Havre and back again. I had a tough time finding good information on this subject, so I made this short video.
I may add additional comments here that are not covered by the video as I think of them.
One thing not mentioned in the video is that the numbers on the train car, i.e. 1 and 2, represent first class or second class. We were a bit confused, as we were assigned carriage 2, which is 1st class, but in our case, that was actually the 2nd car from the front, which had a 1 on the side (for first class).
Another thing that threw us off was how to exit the train station at St. Lazare once we returned. I tried placing our tickets face-down at the reader located at the exit, but it wouldn't let us leave. Turns out that you have to flip the ticket up rather than down, as there's a reader located above the usual reader, which would normally read face-down.
Also, once your leave the Gare Saint Lazare station, on your return, you have to walk straight out and then to your left to find the taxi stand. It's not well marked at all.
Even though I spoke about booking through trainline, I didn't mention their app, which we used. I think I booked without the app (you can book either way), but it's a good idea to download and use their app for mobile tickets.

This was a great video but I booked a last minute cruise and I just checked trainline and the time slots I need to travel the train are all booked. I am completely bummed. I will have to try and find another way to get to versailles. Man booking a cruise at the last minute is literally crazy especially since this is my first international trip. If you have any other suggestions for transportation from le havre to versailles that would be great. This video was awesome though, ty

You could try the SNCF app, but if sold out on Trainline, probably sold out there too.

About how long after your cruise docked, did they let you off? Trying to see which train to take.

It took us a few hours, but we could have gotten off sooner if we carried all of our bags off. But we wanted to do it in an uncrushed and leisurely way. The line for a taxi was long though.

How often does the train from Le Havre to Paris run? Once an hour? If you miss your train, do you have to buy a new ticket or they will let you on the next train?

Once again, check the schedule, which I'd imagine changes from time-to-time. You can check it on the SNCF website or app or on the Trainline app, which I used. Not sure how missed trains are handled. We wanted to switch to an earlier train (not missed). Because I used Trainline, I would have taken a 50% penalty to move to an earlier train, so I didn't do that. Had I booked directly w/SNCF, I don't think they would have charged me that (no promises), but I do find Trainline to be a lot more user-friendly, especially for non-French speakers.

Thanks for sharing. We are considering the train from Le Havre to Paris and back during out 1 day in Le Havre on a cruise this Fall. Our questions are how much time to budget for a cab from Le Havre Train Station to the Port (looks like about 5km) and if cabs were readily available at that station? It sounded like from your video that with tickets in hand (on phone), the only time one has to budget once at either station is the time to get from the street to the train (5-10 minutes?). And lastly, I would imagine from your research before your trip, you found that the trains run pretty much on time? Nice video. Thanks again!

It seemed like the cab ride from the train to the port was maybe 5-7 minutes, but at least double coming back (different route). When we got off the train, it was late and there was a cab (just one) waiting for us, but when returning, we waited at least 20 minutes just to get the cab from the port to the train station. So I guess the short answer is: it depends. Will there be a line for a cab? Which route will they take? If you knew exactly where to go at the train station, then yes 5-10 minutes BUT, it could be a bit confusing, so bake in plenty of extra time. We got there over an hour before the train departed. Better to be too early rather than too late. And yes, the trains seemed to run right on time. P.S. Don't budget 5-10 minutes for anything. Again, err on the side of caution.

Most passengers take second class, which is a bit cheaper. More did join us after our first stop or two, but there were still very few passengers in first class.
