Now that you have all your tools and materials ready, let's get rid of that awful smell...
Step 1: Vacuum the couch thoroughly
This helps remove any loose debris and hair that may be contributing to the smell. In addition, vacuuming can help remove any surface-level odor-causing bacteria.
Start by removing any cushions or pillows from the couch. Vacuum the entire surface of the couch, including the back and sides.
Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently brush the couch’s surface. This will loosen any debris that may be embedded in the fibers. Use the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner to get into the tight spaces between the cushions. Do not forget the edges and seams of the couch.
Vacuum the cushions and pillows separately. Use the upholstery attachment and crevice tool as needed.
Once you are done vacuuming, use a lint roller or tape to remove any remaining pet hair.
A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter is ideal for this step. This is because it can effectively trap allergens, dust, and pet dander.
It’s recommended that you check the filter after vacuuming. Clean or replace the filter if necessary.
Step 2: Apply a solution of water and white vinegar to the couch
White vinegar is a natural deodorizer and has antibacterial properties that can help neutralize and remove smells.
To use this solution, mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle well to combine the ingredients.
Spray the solution onto the couch. Pay special attention to the areas that have the strongest smell.
Allow the solution to sit on the couch for at least 15 minutes. This allows the vinegar to work its way into the fibers and neutralize the odor.
Next, use a damp cloth to blot the couch and remove the solution.
Please, note that this solution should be used with caution. This is because some types of fabrics may be damaged by exposure to vinegar. Therefore, always check the manufacturer's care instructions before using white vinegar solution on your couch. You can also test a small inconspicuous area of the couch before using it all over.
Step 3: Scrub the couch
This step should be done simultaneously with step 2 AFTER the solution has been allowed to sit for a minimum of 15 minutes…
Get a clean stiff-bristled brush or an old toothbrush that has not been used for any other cleaning task.
Use the brush to scrub the areas of the couch that have the most pungent odor. Work the brush in a circular motion and apply a moderate amount of pressure. Be careful not to damage the fabric of the couch. Make sure to focus on the seams, crevices, and other areas where odor accumulates.
Note that you’ll need the water and white vinegar solution for this step as it will serve as the cleaning agent you use to wet your brush before scrubbing.
Once you are done scrubbing, use a damp cloth to wipe down the couch and remove any remaining dirt or debris. Allow the couch to dry completely before doing the next step.
Do this step with caution, as some types of fabrics may be damaged by excessive scrubbing. Always check your couch’s manufacturer's care instructions before doing this step.
Step 4: Blot the couch
This step helps to remove any remaining traces of cleaning solution, dirt, or debris that may be left behind after the previous steps.
To blot the couch, get a clean, damp lint-free cloth. Such cloth will not bleed or stain the couch.
Use the cloth to gently blot the couch. Make sure to wring out the cloth well before using it. Doing this will prevent over-wetting the couch.
Once you are done blotting, use a dry cloth or towel to pat the couch dry. Wait for the couch to air dry completely before you do the next step.
Step 5: Sprinkle baking soda over the couch
Sprinkle it generously over the affected areas. Use your hand or a clean, dry brush to work the baking soda into the couch’s fibers.
Allow the baking soda to sit on the couch for at least 30 minutes. Then, vacuum the couch to remove the baking soda.
