    "I would rather give something away, than to have somebody pay me half of what it's worth". That is a great attitude to have, as it demonstrates your principles. The piece is better off being in the hands of someone who appreciates the craft, instead of being sold to someone who doesn't have respect for the value. Great content, keep it up!

    William Douglas Co. More specifically, I tell people I’d rather give my work to someone who loves it but can’t afford it than to sell it to someone who undervalues it. You are making work to last generations. People should value your investment in the craft accordingly.

    Started out same way 30 years ago. Kept my full time job and built during the evenings and weekends. Took 3 years to get going and now I routinely have a 8 month waiting list. Lots of great advice in your video and a subject you don't often see addressed. I still give away small items which results in calls later asking if I can build this or that. I batch make these items and keep them in stock. My clients are typical ones who want to add one of a kind items to their home. And they can afford them. I have had several tire kickers also and that's part of the business. Yes, I don't try and compete with IKEA. Want Euro knock down furniture have at it. The price I quote is the price you pay. One piece last year resulted in 5 other sales and 3 more months work. Keep up the great channel and good luck at what you are doing.

    Your explanation of entry start prices is spot on, this is the most important message to any new woodworking business, we cant keep undercutting each other, competition is healthy but the more we drop prices the more out of touch the customers get with the reality of how much thing really cost. Simply getting started I've come to respect prices more. Even trying to be honest with my self I found out how out of touch I was. I.e. Build item that old self would have wanted to pay 40$ for. New self comes to realize it cost 40$ just to buy the material....

    I knew that I recognized that mountain. I too am furniture maker on the side and I live in Arcadia as well. What a small world and I loved your advice. I started a handyman business (llc) in order to gain relationships, tools and I've built many cabinets/furniture for them and I am slowly growing my shop as well. I worked for free too in order to grow my client base and it really did propel me into having multiple calls per day from strictly referrals. I haven't even needed a website, just nextdoor and facebook. Your work is fantastic and I appreciate the advice

    I’m a woodworker with ADD....I thrive in jumping around and always having something different, challenging,meaningful,and fun...If anyone else feels the same way I vote go into antique restoration... Missing chair leg one day,missing trim,new table top here,color change there.... I’ve gotten a lot of “we want a piece that matches this one identical” work as long as the piece is not carved to the moon and back it’s awesome cause 1 it pays well,and 2 you got 3D foolproof blueprints...just do what the other piece tells you to... “and jot it all down so you can make it a 3rd or 4th time if you want in the future😉” (I call this legally stealing furniture) Plus,if you like buying tools and fixing them up...you are in luck. Cause you never ever...ever stop depending on how diverse you are.

    My ex father in law gave me the best advice on developing a sellable pieces. He said build the first piece and give it away, build the second piece for yourself but the third piece and every piece after you can sell. By the third one you know how to build it and build it well without time or material wasted.

  • @maxwellyedor7610
    @maxwellyedor76104 жыл бұрын

    Very solid advice. No portfolio means no work, but building a portfolio by doing work too cheaply means once you get the work you’re going to go broke doing it because you hosed yourself on the rate. I got started in metal fab building stuff for buddies, they buy the material, bring beer over and I’d knock it out. That lead to actual customers paying real prices which quickly offset all the free labor and ultimately lead to earning a pretty respectable living. I was able to work for free because I had a full time gig the entire time early on. Instead of barely scraping by on my cut rate work, I was comfortable working during the day and welding at night.

    Brilliant advice for furniture makers. I started the same way and now I do no advertising at all, and I often have to turn down jobs because I just don't have the time. I'll add a couple more tips. 1. Facebook is not the venue to advertise for custom furniture. People expect low prices from Facebook ads. 2. If you find out your client is an engineer, run away as fast as you can, they will nitpick your work until you want to just quit.

    I worked on Brother Vs Brother season 4 and talking to the contractor on that show he said the same thing. Lowering the price to low to get the job ruins the business for everyone else including myself/ yourself. Hanging a door IS $150 no matter it's a single door or interior French door. I've got a job coming up installing a $2800 front door. $600 for me to install it. That maybe $200 more than lowes installing it but they can do that since they got that $200 from you buying the door. Your skill, your tools is worth more than you think. I have to constantly tell myself that. Thank you for the videos!

    Well done 👍, I like your style and you seem to be on the right track. 40 successful years of doing this type of work has revealed several things that have helped influence how I deal with clients; 1- they’re all different 2- they’re not all worth having 3- trust is more important than price 4- value engineering can help lead to resolving costs/pricing issues 5- have patients educating an uninformed client on value 6- trust your gut , have confidence in your own value, and know when to walk away 7- consistent dependability is more valuable and more difficult than you may realize These are just a few of mho’s , Paul

    EVERYBODY listen to this BillyD dude. He’s on the money. I don’t have a woodworking business but I have another business I started 20 years ago doing exactly the same thing to build it. Today it’s grown into a multimillion dollar international business and I STILL do the same things today that I did in the beginning. In the beginning I slept in my car, ate rice for many months and lived in a bad neighbourhood because the rent was cheep. Every penny I saved on lifestyle I used to get to my next customer or improve my product. I have never advertised or marketed, everything is word of mouth. Giving sample products to influential businesses is a key point which we still do today. Although today our clients are national or international I still do the same thing. We offer a company, regardless of the number of stores, our product for free for 6 months, and if they want to continue, this is the price per site. That’s like you rocking up to a company with multiple stores and saying let me work with you, we’ll completely fit out one store, and if you like it, this is the price per store onwards. Keep up the good work young man. Respect. PS. I don’t live in my car these days, (praise God) but my daily driver is still a 16yo pickup. I’d rather use the money to impress a customer with my product than spend it on some fancy car thinking that’s what they care more about.

    Keep up the good work man, it's very influential to me. I made my first ever project about 18 months ago and it really sucked, but my passion drove me to learn more and more. I stuck at it and managed to build up a portfolio enough to land a job in the industry, having no previous training or qualifications. I've now started getting people approach me for private work and plan to start my own business as soon as I feel ready to make that leap. Your work is art though, I hope one day I can make something as beautiful.

I'm hoping this is a smart way to start but I'm also planning on making like half a dozen smaller projects from the same slabs as the large piece hoping as soon as the first piece gets out on social media, I've got product to sell immediately for people that become interested in my work.

  • @WilliamDouglasCo

    @WilliamDouglasCo

    4 жыл бұрын

    Brett Turner the night stands are white ash! I did not use Rubio monocoat on them though. If I have the right customers I will try to get them to let me do a soap finish on white ash because it keeps the ash white. Not all customers are cool with this and I won’t do it for countertops because it doesn’t provide a lot of protection. I do it on my chairs also. I use the Rubio on walnut and any ash that needs higher protection because it will yellow it a bit.
