How to get BIG as a natural lifter? (5 important factors)

Спорт

So, you want to get BIG as a natural lifter, eh? Here are 5 factors that are essential to focus on in your journey.
TimeStamps:
00:00 Geoff Says Hello
00:25 1 Exercise Selection
04:23 2 Training Splits
08:00 3 Progression
08:58 4 Diet
11:18 5 Lifestyle
Exercise Selection (:25)
Focus on the basics. Compound movements should be 80% of your training. Hinge, Push, Pull, Squat, Row, Press. Those who have my book know all about these :)
Training Splits (4:23)
Full body, Upper/Lower or Push/Pull/Legs are all going to be great. If you are on a bro split and haven't tried anything else...do so.
Progression (8:00)
Get stronger. That's the main thing. Do so at a variety of movements and rep ranges.
Diet (8:58)
Eat. You don't need to eat so much that you put on fat, but if you are skinny and starting to lift weights...EAT! Protein, carbs, fats...yes! All of the above! Down the hatch it does!
Count calories if you want, and consider keeping a food log as well.
Lifestyle (11:18)
Make training and getting BETTER at training a priority. Get in your sleep. Don't miss weeks and months of training at a time. Find the time to put in the work and you'll be rewarded in time.

Solid info overall but you left out the most important factor for novice lifters which is ensuring that they include at least 6 different bicep curl variations throughout the week to ensure maximum width, thickness, definition and peak for both the short and long heads.

You hit the nail on the head with the beginner programming. I spent a year doing a split that was given to me by a PT I hired a few times. He got me to do A LOT of machine weights. Ended up completely wasting my time. Switched to a 3-4 day 5x5 full body routine, concentrating on big compound movements with no machine weights. Although that rep range was not optimal for bodybuilding, I still put on a substantial amount of muscle. I did that routine for a while. Changed it so it was more bodybuilding focused, increased rep ranges, added more accessories and variations, introduced sprinting too. My physique got way more aesthetic. Immediately received way more compliments.

Im eating for size now and feel Im making gains faster than when I started (delayed newbie gains?). I’ve also just started experimenting with the advanced stuff from your book such as rest pause sets (digging that). It could be a result of both. I wonder if I can still get any newbie gains that I left on the table trying to keep abs.

Good info. I liked your section on the necessity to get stronger and add weight to your 20 rep max etc. How would you feel about just continually adding reps at the same weight though? Obviously volume is going up which I guess would be the most important factor.

  • @GVS

    @GVS

    3 жыл бұрын

Depends on the exercise, the overall structure of your plan, even personality. Some people just like to dominate a weight (turn 5RM to 10RM) before adding weight. Others like to just add weight with the same reps. Still others like powerlifters add even more weight and reduce reps across a mesocycle. Lots of ways to do it. Generally, intensity (weight on the bar) will emphasize strength, while volume will be more for size.

Agree man, big compounds is what needs to be done for size when you're natural. Bro splits also seem to be especially bad for hypertrophy. In my first year I did full body 3 times a week and even though my strength gains were kinda slow because of high volume and not too much recovery time, my size gains were so much better than other people's with different splits. I gotta admit each training session was about 3 hours though because I did a shitload of exercises :D. Squat, Bench, Rows, OHP, Pullups/Pulldown + some flies every day. Might have been a little bit overkill in retrospect. I also agree that counting calories atleast for a little while can be useful for beginners. Just to get some experience and a better feeling for calorie density / protein content, especially in regular staple meals. Overall great advice bro!

I Mix IT Up quite different. First i don't follow a weekly Split. Usualy it's more Like: Chest/Back 1 ( 2 exercise Chest Focus in high weight, 3 exercises Back Focus on technic, contraction, ...), Leg day 1 (Focus high weight Leg Press. I have scorleose therefore Mist be careful with squats. Leg Extension, Leg curls, Back Extension with hipflexion Focus. Next day: shoulder/Arms. Usualy then a Rest day. Next Back/Chest 2. 2 exercises Back high weight and 3 exercises Chest Focus Isolation (Flys, some machine Work). Next Leg 2 (Focus on squats AS mentioned lower weight because of scorleose but full Rom, Rumänien deadlifts, aductor and abductor Work), next shoulder/Arms again. Sometimes i Put in the Rest day after Leg. Depends on how i feel. Also every second time i Mix Chest/Back 1 and do Higher incline for Chest and decline or weighted Dips afterwards AS second exercise. (Usualy 15,% incline and dumbell flat). Quite a Mix, i know. But fits for me and Makes Fun, too. AS i have some Other Problems too (demaged left ellbow, and so on) i must be careful with Recovery but also want to get My Volume in. Any thoughts or opinions on this "Programm"???

You might be letting yourself recover too much. I used to have this problem because I thought it was detrimental to muscle growth if you ‘train too hard’ but as soon as I started going to the gym 6 days a week rather than 3-4 days I started seeing results. Also make sure you eat a lot. Of actual food too. And yeah trying to handle stress and getting enough sleep is obviously important.

i dont know why bro splits get so much hate, in way u do end up working out the same muscle group more that once because if u do chest one day and triceps another day u still end up hitting triceps more than once a week (chest is also worked because i am doing close grip press on the day i do triceps). i tried doing fullbody 3 times a week but it just was not working out for me, it wasn't that i was super sore all the time, i was just exhausted throughout the week, so i tried another week where i reduced my intensity(only taking my last set to failure vs all my working sets) for my fullbody workout, but still the same results i felt fucking dead at the end of the week and unsatisfied because i couldn't go all-out on my lifts. I have seen the best results on the "bro splits" which if done right do end up hitting the same muscle 2 times a week, even though the intensity is very different but i feel like it allows for better recovery. that being said i haven't being lifting for very long which might play a part in it.

With a small surplus you may be able to keep your abs year round (albeit maybe blurry). Then, can do a brief 8-10 week cut from March to May or something. Might slow progress slightly in terms of muscle building in the long term but also make things more enjoyable if you prefer having lean summers.

For a 15 minute video: 30-60 minutes shooting footage myself, maybe more. But this isn't "wasted time" as it's of real sets, it's maybe 10-15 minutes of extra time. 10-15 minutes transferring from DJI OSMO to phone. Again, not wasted time, as I can do other stuff. 10-15 minutes editing clips and arranging everything, chopping stuff up. Maybe longer. Haven't timed it. 15-120 minutes planning what I'm going to say (sometimes very quick and easy like this video, sometimes...research/studies/pubmed/links/reading/learning/evidence/etc) 30-60 minutes actually saying it (often my mouth doesn't seem to keep up with my brain. Stupid mouth.) 15-30 minutes watching the video and putting edits/B-roll stuff in if needed 15 minutes watching the final video with everything to make sure it's OK and there's nothing (too) cringe. 15 minutes for the app to churn out the final video 5-10 minutes to transfer to my computer 15-120 minutes to upload to KZread. I live in China, it's taken 3-4 hours before. Recently has been OK. As a one-man crew, putting out a video per day while still writing on Quora and Medium, and working with a lot of clients and writing training/diet plans is certainly MUCH more than 40 hours per week. It's honestly probably closer to 80-100 hours. If I am awake, I am working, or working out.

What about the Gregg Doucette advice that you can build muscles on a deficit while maintaining the abs? What do you think about it? Sometimes I feel like overeating (bulking) to build muscle is overrated and will only actually make add a bit of more unnecessary fat around your frame. Reading about guys like Eugene Sandow, he stated in one of his books that his diet were nothing special and ate just three ordinary meals per day following only his hunger and satiation feelings.

I've been gyming about 3 years now, consistently...and when people start with this "natural" talk, my answer is simple...if you're taking any kind of supplementation, then you're not natural... I don't take any enhancers, or steroids, yet I dont consider myself as natural, because I do take creatine, protein whey and preworkout... Only if you are completely natural, with no enhancers OR supplements of any kind, and get all your nutrients from complete natural sources, then can you say you're natural, but the moment you are supplementing with protein whey ( which isn't exactly natural ) or creatine ( again it's not "natural", it manufactured and bottled ) or you use some preworkout mix ( again it's Manufactured and bottled ) then you're not natural...so in other words almost all of us that gym that use any or some kind of supplementation or enhancers, we are not natural...discussion ended...
