Another great way to gain experience while attending school is applying for high end home decor/furniture stores (ex. Pottery barn, Crate and Barrel, Ethan Allen, Arhaus). A lot of these higher end stores provide interior decoration services and it can get you a step closer to knowing someone who’s an interior designer that you then could intern for.

Also what helped me to secure a remote internship, I made a list of all the top 10 interior designers or agencies I admire by reseraching them and I reached out to them to offer help for experience and references and they always need help since they are so busy and almost everyone of course responded and didnt care much if it was remote [as long as the work gets done like help with social media, invoices, client follow ups, coordinating order returns online, etc] This is how I got my foot in the industry, built a professional network and of course over time this can lead to a permanent position at their company. This all depends on the quality of your work. Hope this hels!

Your cover letter is gonna be key in situations where you don't have any experience. When I applied to the online design company I work with there was a section where I could explain other things about myself so that helped. And some companies have headhunters they work with and if you apply through indeed, monster or other job sites (as opposed to the company site) they'll have a call with you to get to know you better. But if you don't get the chance to talk to someone directly then make sure you use action verbs to start your sentences to communication that you're a do-er and detail how well you work with others in a team environment or how well you service customers. Those are skills that are necessary no matter what job you're applying for.

Most programs are about 3-4 years. But some schools offer certificate programs that only take 1-2 years
