I think I applied to agencies earlier than I should've and this video was incredibly insightful on what type of art I should add to my portfolio. It's an extensive portfolio I've built up over the past 5 years with over 400 clients, and I do have some variety; but I don't have anything that shows my skill with patterns and I don't think my art looks commercially marketable either, since I've focused on portraits. Maybe my variety is in the wrong direction too🤔

This is so good! I hear different opinions about how broad or how narrow a portfolio should be. What about styles? I can quickly grow my portfolio to be extensive if I know I can include watercolor art, acrylic art, line art, art for children products, hand lettering, etc. Or is the need for one unified style, just a variety or themes?

That's a good question...I don't think everything has to be the same style (my portfolio certainly isn't) but I do think keeping an eye on marketability and quality is important. Digging out your watercolor landscapes from college to add in when you are now mainly a digital pattern designer may be a hard sell. But if you just like to create in different mediums and all the work is on par with what's selling commercially, I think that's okay.
