I have had this same issue for over a year. I had to walk up to the garage door before I could get the door to open. And even them it was not working 100% of the time. I tried extending the antenna along the ceiling, it did not help. I removed all the LED lights inside and outside of the garage, this also did not help. But I was able to come to a solution. I cut about about 12 inches of wire and attached it to the antenna and just let it dangle loose below the opener. This worked! For some reason, the location of the wire was the solution. Even with LED lights all plugged back in. Somehow this worked better than trying to run 10ft of wire along the ceiling. I hope this helps anyone out there who is still having an issue
Thanks for this. Been struggling with mine in same way, (new remotes, new batteries, etc). Neighbors prob think I'm crazy getting out of my car every time and trying it from all diff spots of driveway, like I'm performing some weird magic. Gonna try it today. ---Update, it worked!! Be it from the driveway, the sidewalk, or from the street. It worked. Thank you!
I see most of the comments are from men. Well I'm the wife of a man who was ready to give up after many weeks of trying to fix our garage opener. I found your video and he did the extension, and it worked!! Thanks soooo much!!
Totally worked! Been struggling with this issue forever, changing batteries, adjusting the sensors, re-programming the remotes, etc.. Thank you for posting this super helpful video man!
I gotta admit, I didn’t think this would work, but it absolutely does!!! I was going to just buy a new opener but glad you gave this hack!! So simple and effective!!
Thank you!!! This took all of 10 minutes to fix my opener. Had some old thermostat 2-wire and a few staples. Saved me from buying a new opener.
Awesome. I had this problem as well. Didn't have a long enough wire laying around to extend it as far as you did, but even just an extra 18" wire, wrapped around the metal support brace holding up the motor, did the trick!
Oh my goodness. Every since we had our security system have had additional attached to it, seem they messed with it for our garage door to hesitate to open. It wasn’t picking up the button signal and now that I’ve added wire to it like he’s shown, I now can push it before time instead of waiting till I get directly under it to open. Thank you so much for this info
Now that worked like a charm. I had thought about it but for some ungodly reason I got the idea that the lengthening the antenna would not make a difference and so didn't bother. Not that it was such a big deal. I actually ran the wire into the attic and threw it over some of the roof supports and it works great. THANKS!
Dude you saved my life! Thank you. Our work building has been doing this for years
Thank you, I just added some wire to mine and it works better than it ever had before! Been aggravated at this problem for a couple years now!
Added about 4 hrs later than the 2nd paragraph: I used some coax wiring which I attached using one of those Cone Shaped Wire connectors to the existing v short antenna. Another article suggested grounding the coax shielding, but I figured I would test without that extra step. Just tossed the 8 feet of black coax over some of the garage bracing 2x4's and that totally fixed the problem. I can now open and close the garage door from a far distance. THANKS TONS! I have the exact same problem which I could not solve with a thinner shorter antenna wire extension (horizontal placement). If you look up how antennas work you will see that antenna physics is super complicated and hard to understand. Changing the nominal 3 volt battery made no difference, just like you said. I'm going to try to duplicate what you have done and will get back here with my results. In any case Thanks a Lot.
Thanks! This worked perfectly! Mine was so intermittent even if I was right next to the door. I used stranded speaker wire because that’s what I had kicking around.
Making metal-to-metal contact between a short wire extension and one of the opener’s L-shaped supporting brackets will yield the same operating range improvement… it essentially turns the opener support structure into an antenna.

@@fisherman9435 It definitely will work if you have a functioning short antenna wire already on the motor unit. Strip at least 1 inch of insulation from the loose end. Attach as much additional, similar gauge, wire as you need to reach the galvanized steel L-shaped brackets supporting the door opener motor, to the factory antenna wire, making sure you’ve also stripped the insulation off this extension wire. Wrap the 2 bare wires together and secure with a wire nut. Lastly, strip the insulation from the far end of the new extension wire and wrap it around a metal screw that you’ll secure to the galvanized steel support brackets. If you follow these steps, you’ve created a much longer door opener antenna that will extend your door opener operating range. My opener now operates (most of the time) from about 400’ away.

@@fisherman9435 So is mine. As long as it conducts electricity, it’ll function as an antenna. Make sure the original antenna (you’re slicing the new wire to) is physically connected to the opener itself. I know that sounds silly, but good to check it anyhow. I can email you a photo of mine if you think that would be helpful…
wow thanks a bunch! It worked, was about to get a new garage opener, thinking it was broken or something. Thanks man!

Found your video.. Works great! Been fighting this since 2019 with my chamberlain 1/2hp garage opener. Thanks for the hack.
My remote was barely working and my homelink in my vehicles barely worked too. I took your advice and extended my the garage antenna with 14 awg wire and wire nutted them together. I ran the wire on the ceiling towards the door and stapled the end of the wire to the top of the exterior garage door casing. I tell you what my remote response is incredible and works a good 50 yards away now. Thanks for the easy advice

Thank you for the instructions it worked perfectly took about 20 minutes installation i can open my garage at the end of block amazing
I have the same problem ( which wasn't about 2 weeks ago until I unplugged the power supply) but I think I finally made it work after several DIY tries. I did it differently by disconnecting the original wired remote and used the wire/wires as antenna extension. It worked (yesterday ) but have not tested from how far it will work because I got tired. However, it certainly looks cleaner with nothing running on the ceiling. Try it too. BTW, I'll consider buying the kit from Amazon but I'll run the coax wire above the ceiling for a professional look.
After 15 years, my range suddenly went to just in front of the door. Don't know what changed...Anyway, used your trick, worked like a charm. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. Always wondered if that would work. Works great. Hair looks fine

Thank bro. I thought I had to reprogram the system. Your a miracle worker.
Thank you. I've struggled with my opener since I switched to LED lights (and the resulting interference). I bought a bunch of ferrite cores in an attempt to shield all my cables. Those helped a bit but I should have tried this obvious (and much cheaper) method first. My opener now works from across the street. Many thanks for your help.

Had the same issue, swapped out my bulbs to LEDs and drome myself crazy that I couldn't open my garage door anymore! I tried to reprogram my cars, but in new batteries and nothing worked. Remove the LEDs and with work perfectly!
Had this exact problem out of the blue and I’m so glad I found this video. Worked like a champ! Thanks man!
I just bought a new garage door system which has an app. Great video
All those who say to check the light bulbs in the opener.....winner. If they are standard LED bulbs in the opener, those bulbs interfere with the opener. I never would have believed it myself. We bought our house 1 year ago and have struggled with the opener remote the whole time. I read comments on videos like this, kept seeing to check bulbs. Went to Lowes amd bought true garage opener led bulbs made by GE. Went to change them, sure enough standard led bulbs were in it. Replaced and wow!!!! Now I can open the garage door from a minimum of 100 yards. Crazy

After reading this I realized this could be my issue. I replaced the bulb with LED and lately I’ve noticed intermittent working. I initially thought it was my push button opener as I knew the battery was old so I changed the CR2032 and still the same so I need to pick up a standard incandescent garage bulb 💡 to see if that’s the true cause.

I’ve done a similar thing with my garage door but used the braided wire then ran it underneath the top of my door. I couldn’t get much better results however seeing you use the solid wire and how well it worked I’m going to give that a try. Thanks for sharing
Nice work buddy! I hope this fixes this frustrating issue!
I just knew there was something I can do to get this lazy opened to work ----- thank you....
I appreciate this video a lot. I can’t program my opener to the cars and the range to open is very short. I will extend my antennae. That said, my garage opener is Aladdin and I found a wifi operator called Aladdin Connect. It works with an Aladdin app, Alexa, and better yet, Siri. The cool thing about Siri is that I’ve given the command with the phone in my pocket. With Alexa it’s somewhat slower, but it’s also voice command. It is very convenient because the app works just like without smart lights. You can schedule an open and close or simply give the command from a restaurant across the country and it will work. The app also gives you an open or close status.
Thank you my brother for the great information mine works great now!!!
This worked great, thanks for the video. You should keep trying from further away it like those Michael Jordan and Larry Bird commercials from the 90’s 😆
It works!!!! Thanks a lot. Good money saving.

I took a 2 inch spring loaded hose clamp and hooked it to the end. I went from the same thing couldn't open from right outside the door to able to open it from 5 houses away
Thx for sharing, great solution, I was going to try this but saw in a couple of your replies you said it stopped working for you after a couple of weeks you installed the wire, is that true or I misunderstood you? thx again.
What wire did you use for the extension? Can I use speaker wire?
Is it possible that my board has a rec issue?
Have you tried to connect the original antenna to the opener rail instead of extending the wire? I suppose it might work either.
I did tha same but still sometimes won't open. Any idea. What else can I do?
I have two different types of remotes: one from Lowes and one from Amazon; and for some reason they won't connect to my garage. My garage lets up just fine with the pad thats hanging on the door as you come out to the garage. I've changed light 💡 and I still can't get it to program with either remotes. Both remotes are brand new. I'm lost on what to do. Can someone help me please????!!!😳😳😳😳😳😳
I was about to try this but figured i would see if anyone had a video about if this solution would work. Mine was crazy, when the door was closed i could open it a couples down the road, when it was open i had to be right underneath it or it wouldnt work. So maddening. Countless times i backed up 6' from my door obly to have to pull forward to close the door
What would happen if it was extended to the exterior?
I tried this method, for some reason still not working properly. Could it be my remote?
spliced into a coaxial cable and it works 2 house down across the street!

What a lot of people may not know is that if you have L.E.D. bulbs in your opener motor they will interfere with the signal from your remote. So a mod like this works well for that. Also, if you dangle the end right to the edge of the top of the door, the signal won't have to go through the wall, but through the thinner, less dense door.

@@brianhooey7088 Genie makes special LED bulbs for GDO's and some manuals will list recommended options for LED bulbs also.
LED interference Issue: Here is the REAL TEST for LED light interference. Simply unscrew the LED Bulbs (all of the circuitry is in the bulbs, at least the most common LED bulbs) and then test your remote, plug them in once more and see if you can get repeatable results using the remote control from the SAME distance outside the garage. A long coax cable solved my problem (w LEDs left in place) and since I just thought of this I haven't tried this test. If you, please let us know!
Just to let you know if you’re having problems with the range for your remotes think in your mind did you put LED lightbulbs in the garage door opener because LED lightbulbs actually mess up the remotes with LED lightbulbs you can put regular lightbulbs in them or genie lightbulbs

You could use the LiftMaster Remote Light Control - 825LM -this would be an IOT based solution. Or alternatively use a LiftMaster 312HM Universal Coaxial Receiver controlling a relay -this solution would use your existing remotes. I’ve used both in combination to control an access gate.
