I find the best way to get a raise is to get a new job. In 5 years, and several jobs, I went from 36k to 100k.

when my job gives me a raise, they have always given me 1,000 dollars. Switching companies has given me 5-10k each time.

@@rachaelossovicki181 About 10k is pretty typical with a move. My biggest jump was when I went from 70 to 87. Of course in salary negotiations, I never talk about just my salary. If/when I get asked about it, I always reference my "total compensation", which includes potential bonuses, so the higher figure gives me a bit more leverage.

Thanks Barbara! What about annual review time? Is it ever okay to say you want more during this annual review? For example if your boss says you’re receiving a 2% raise this year, is it a good idea to ask for more or are you too late?

Fortunately, the firm I work in recognized my contributions even before I had to ask, and promoted me to a position that is 2 tiers higher than what my rank was and adjusted my salary accordingly. They also gave me a very fair end of year bonus. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones? But in my previous job, I did struggle with getting a raise and I had to ask for it again and again but no avail. Eventually I had to recognize my worth and leave; best decision I ever made!

Don't ask for a raise, be your own boss, I learn it by myself.

How does this apply to those working in the public sector? We generally go in at a point on a pay scale that is determined by a calculation based on years in education plus years of relevant experience. You then tend to stay there (except CoL raises) until you promote to a different job title. How might one approach that if you have additional responsibilities but the same job title as when you joined?
