Thanks for that tip Mike. I’ll have to go check my drop arm, to see if it has that slot in it 😊. The drag link tip explains why they put that ‘wedge’ on the steering wheel when doing alignment. Set the wheel ‘straight ahead’, then bring the actual wheels to ‘straight ahead’ with the drag link, using the lasers as the guide

The Pitman arm on my old '77 RRC got really loose, the nut was fairly well undone when I stopped to see why the steering was so sloppy. We'd been driving for days on badly corrugated roads in Kakadu NP, NT Australia. I re-tightened the nut again with my trusty "big shifting spanner" on side of the track. It never came loose again in all the time we had the vehicle. Good "top tip" on the steering wheel centring Mike.

Got to stay at Mataranka on our way to Darwin - but I seem to recall Kakadu was off limits as it was the end of the wet season

Only the Adwest steering boxes have the bolt hole. Gemmer steering boxes don't.

My drop arm nut came loose the other day despite having a tab washer correctly fitted. This puzzled me. I’ve tightened it up with loctite this time & put a tippex line across the whole thing & so far it seems to be ok. (200 miles later)

Mine did that too, and it was a combination of the splines being worn on the steering box and drop arm (from being loose from the previous owner) and not re-torquing the the nut after a short drive. A new drop arm and re-torquing the nut twice has solved the nut/drop arm coming loose. Check out the Gwyn Lewis website as he mentions it somewhere about re-torquing the drop arm with his steering rod kits.

@@carltonr3417 ... it’s odd isn’t it especially when the tab washers in place. I wonder if the shaft can unwind itself inside the steering box.

@@darrenphillips6456 It’s definitely an issue with splines. Make sure they are clean with no crud, grease or anti seize or anything and make sure the splines aren’t worn. Replace the drop arm if in doubt and re-torque it a few times after a short drive and it shouldn’t loosen again. Re-torquing it will help push the drop arm further up the taper increasing friction between the two parts to decrease movement between them.

@@carltonr3417 .... hmm. Hopefully the loctite used lately will do the trick. Time will tell. It’s potentially lethal if the drop arm comes off!! Fortunately you get a bit of warning when the nuts come loose because you’re all over the road & it’s like half a turn on the steering wheel to keep it straight. Nightmare!!

An off centre steering wheel is the biggest pisser ever. It may only be a mm or two, but it affects where you put your hands and fingers on the wheel and on a 328mile journey with a penman on the back it eats into your brain. Grrrrr.

Hi Mike, yes , but when i did this on my 90, the drag link was more than 4 turns out and the string trick showed that the tracking was toeing out far too much,so, i adjusted to suit and later took it to a mate with a laser alignment set, 1/4 deg toe to the right, perfect for our camber, a mate said that the earlier steering boxes were unthreadsed as a safety thingy, any pin fitted would drop out when moved, regards, Phil

I recently started to overhaul my steering box and the thread was 7/16 UNC, if I remember correctly. I did try M8 but it didn't work. The drag link tip is great, i never considered that. Thanks again for the great video Mike.
