Lets remember the most important part was the actual guitar PLAYING and how it literally started a "arms race" for guitar playing... So many great talented tasty players came out of the 1980s its a whos who of killer players, sure there was some goofy hair and clothes and songs (for sure) BUT there was also AMAZING guitar players who stepped up their playing level and many players and kids wanted to learn to shred and rip it up more.... such a cool ERA

A major contributor to the guitar tone of the 80’s was the Rockman RockModules and headphone amp by Tom Scholz of Boston. The band’s signature guitar, distortion and chorus/clean sound were so unique and sought after that Scholz created a company and released gear that had that sound. ZZ Top were some of the first bands to use it. The album Hysteria by Def Leppard was recorded using only Rockman modules. Scholz pretty much gave the 80’s that boosted mid sound that you hear of that era. Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins is another example. I don’t know for sure if the Rockman was used but you can hear what the tone is going for. You should look into the Rockman stuff and you’ll be blown away of the rabbit hole! Neil Schon of Journey also used the Rockman! Great episode man!!

  • @dongpedroyi

The Rockman gear is part of an obscure and elusive part of Rock history that not many people are aware of because of its short-lived commercial success before the digital processors' invasion. Not many known Rock guitarists have a degree in electronics engineering from MIT like Tom Scholz so it is more than reasonable to assume that he knew what he was doing when he designed those effects - and probably the one and only true competitor against the BOSS pedals. I am in the (slow) process of either building a replica or pay the price tag for an original Rockman. It is interesting that guitarists are going back to the simplicity of vintage analog pedalboards and ditching the 80's stacks of digital racks but nobody is replicating the Tom Scholz stuff except for the Japanese startup company named GOAT.

God I LOVE the tone of a good 80s guitar! No other decade comes close because of all the top guitarist just trying to out do the other guy. They may have been friends but it was straight up competition. Steve Vai didn't sound like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads didn't sound Tony Iommi, Tracii Guns didn't sound anything like Slash etc! They all had there own voice and sound. George Lynch always talked about the search for the perfect tone and these guys did just that. Anyone searching for some solid modern hair metal bands check out Loud N Nasty, Crashdiet, Sister Sin, Sister, De La Cruz, Santa Cruz, Jailbait, Foxey, Crazy Lixx, Salems Lott, Wildstreet, Gunner, Frenchkiss, Panzer Princess, Redlight Attraction, Reckless Love, Peepshow/States of Panic. Hopefully this leads you to more!

Hey Dagan, great demo and playing! I live about 20 miles from the old Kramer plant where my friend and Master Luthier Paul Unkert worked creating the Kramer Baretta and the 5150 that Eddie used in Hot For Teacher and on stage at the time. Paul shares a lot of stories about Eddie when he would come to Kramer for a visit. Eddie would come in and clear a bench to tinker with guitars while having a cigarette and Heineken’s lol! Another thing Eddie liked was Paul giving him several 500k pots with treble bleeds! He also says Eddie’s a really nice guy and his wife Valerie Bertinelli at the time was really a sweet person. Anyway, glad to see Kramer back again and fortunate to know Paul!

That's basically what Mick Mars played. The one with the mirrored pick guard. And I'm surprised he didn't mention it, but they're doing a limited run of Dave "the Snake" Sabo's Beretta. The green one with the snake on it.

Great video! I can’t wait to try using my overdrive pedal combined with my amp overdrive. I’m using a distortion pedal for my hair band sound but never thought about this approach until now.
